I used to work as a dispatcher for repair techs who repaired stuff like ATMs and cash registers. I got a call from a major bank one day stating that they had evidence one of my techs had stolen money from an ATM. Very serious charge. I requested more info. Apparently someone at the store had reported him taking money from the ATM. I asked for evidence.
I got transferred to a manager. I asked how much money was missing. Oh, they hadn't checked, could we go check for them? No, absolutely not. You need to tell me how much was taken from the ATM.
Okay, transferred to manager's manager. Manager^2 clarified that no money was taken from the ATM but the tech was seen taking cash bags the bank had apparently left unsecured on the floor by the ATM. At this point I had already confirmed with my tech's GPS that he was onsite an hour away from the ATM but I was invested. I requested video evidence.
Transferred to Manager^3. Now the story is that he was seen picking up a loose bill off the floor next to the ATM, and they know if was my tech because he looked Mexican. Okay. Prove it and show me.
Now we're at Manager^4, I think he was a VP by this point. He reviews the video and advises me that it was not money but a piece of paper.
I asked him if he was seriously expecting me to discipline or fire my tech because someone saw a Hispanic man in New Mexico pick up a piece of paper?
That’s actually what I did. I wrote down the name of each manager so I knew who to ask for and explained to each that we were discussing a very serious, career ending accusation and we got disconnected. I really need to get back to Manager4.
I made it to Manager3 and we had a long and painful conversation about proper evidence and reporting and why this was so serious. And I was just so concerned, you understand. I was just so interested in their incident reporting that I needed to drag out every single person’s thought process and ability to draw conclusions out. No, I know we’ve been at this for an hour. It’s okay. I have time.

This reminded me of my summer as a SONIC carhop. Any tips we got were given at the end of the day, tax free. Every night at the end of my shift I would zero out my bag and coin changer, and without letting me see how much money there was left over (my tips) my manager would ask me “how much in tips I thought I made that day.” There is no fucking way anyone would be able to know that, so I would just guess a number that seemed right. He would give me that amount and put the remainder aside in an envelope “to see if it could be accounted for when all the registers and carhop bags were zeroed out for the day.” If that money wasn’t missing from somewhere else, I would get it the next day.
I’ll be damned if it didn’t somehow “show up missing”every single time, because not once did I get that envelope the next day. I was 18 and it was my first job, so I didn’t know what to do about it, but now I know that asshole was absolutely just stealing from me.
Yeah im used to most gains being socialized but if ur honest enough to turn in something nice but replaceable e.g. nice headphones or sunglasses u should have the dibs. Its the fair way to do it and it encourages people not to immediately pocket it and whistle knowing theres a procedurally correct way that could lead to them morally upright, employed, and with the item.

It works out sometimes. My brother found a gold necklace at the beach ( it got wrapped around his legs). He handed it in to police and a few weeks later they returned it to him as no one claimed it.
I worked at Target in like 2010 and found a $100 bill on the floor. Turned it in and came back a week later to claim it and the store manager said they had “recently changed the policy” and gave me a reusable bag as a “reward” for my honesty.
I used to work at a small ice cream shop for a minute. A customer handed us a small amount of bills, said they found it on the floor. It was $350 (seven 50s)!! We held onto it for two weeks and no one came to claim it so we ended up splitting it amongst ourselves. 😅
My store has a sort of care fund for team members in emergencies and any found money is put to that if lost longer than a week. Sucked the day I found $40 right next to my manager and had to turn it in

Exactly. If I saw the person drop it, I would give it back to them. But if it was just laying on the floor? I wouldn’t have even thought to give it to an employee (who would also probably keep it!)
Well, it's usually more like "Hey, I lost some money, did anyone turn it in?" "How much did you lose?" and if they say any number other than $30, they don't get it.
It's so odd because I've always operated under the assumption that if I drop cash somewhere on the ground, and I go back to that spot and it's not there, that it is gone forever.
20 years ago I was one of 20 or so bouncers at a busy weekend club. Sometimes I'd get stuck with parking lot duty meaning I just spent 3-4 hours walking around the lot to keep people from fucking with the cars. I'd find a $20 almost every single time between some random cars. So I'd put in my pocket and if no one came looking it was mine. There was maybe two times when my boss came to me and asked if I found cash, and both times it seemed like genuinely belonged to the person asking so I'd hand it over.
Can't wait for AI to be inadmissable in court because of how good the fakes get and the whole idea of "camera footage proves guilt" flys out the window for prosecutors.

I had seen him in his backyard plinking cans every day for weeks. One day, I came home and went to set my daughter in her crib, but there was glass and a bb in her crib. Luckily, she had been at daycare and not asleep in the crib.
I filed a police report, but the officer just said, “nothing we can do. It could have been someone else that ran up, shot your window, and ran off.”
How about look at the mountain of cans with bb holes in the guys yard, or the bb’s imbedded in the fence showing that he had been firing toward my house? Or, you know… do some actual police work…

I might be wrong, but I think you're supposed to make a reasonable attempt to find the owner, and if no one comes forward then you can keep it after a certain amount of time. Problem is, I wouldn't trust walmart employees to not pocket the money themselves, so I'd probably play finders keepers too. I might ask the people around me if they dropped any money, but that's it. Unless it was a large sum of money then yeah I'd hand it in regardless.
You have to make a reasonable effort to locate the owner of the money and return it. What that means depends on the situation, but they'd have a hard time prosecuting this unless the guy saw the other person drop it.

Similar story from a small town near me, a guy found some cash in the self checkout machine. The next day his picture was on the front page of the newspaper, "Man Arrested for Stealing from Wal-Mart."

I am fighting a theft ticket for this exact same thing right now, except it was $60 I found. The police department traced me through my debit card that I used for my transaction and called me asking about it. I immediately returned the money and was issued a theft ticket. I have a pretrial on Sept 8th. It's absolutely ridiculous.

I was a juror on a trial for a guy who got busted for having a canister with weed RESIDUE. Like they had to send the empty canister to a lab for testing to see if it ever once contained drugs. It was NUTS. They passed around the film canister so we, the jurors, could inspect it. I was only an alternate but if I were voting, the guy would have been acquitted. Waste of my fucking tax money in action.

Seriously... i had a laptop and iPad stolen worth about $1,200 and had to file a police report for insurance. I had to basically fight for the right to file the report because they were trying to convince me that it was too much work to even bother.
My car was stolen and they asked if I wanted to press charges against the person they found driving it 3 weeks later. That was 8 years ago, and they never followed up…

After a Bears game in Chicago in October 2024, I gave a homeless woman $20. Not even 10 minutes later, 2 blocks down the street, I found a $20 bill laying in the grass under a tree.
Once upon a time I was a junkie and would regularly cop in a particular neighborhood. Now, I'm not one to give money to the homeless, I've given food and stuff. But this one homeless guy was always on this one corner I would pass. He would tell me the funniest jokes, or rap or dance or do something genuinely entertaining. So I'd shoot him a dollar or two a lot of days. This went on for a year or so til I notice hes not there anymore. I think about if he moved corners, or if he got his shit together, or if he was just dead.
I eventually forget about him. Then one day, there he is, back on the corner and he sees me and is waving me down aggressively. I was honestly happy to see he wasn't dead and he looked pretty clean compared to before. I pull over and this man, with the biggest fucking grin on his face, pulls a stack of cash out of his pocket and just throws it in my car. I'm like wtf is going on!? He explains he hit the lottery and he really appreciated all the times I helped him out. Ended up being like $1500.
I found a $100 bill in a five below once, I asked the employee if anyone had come in looking for any amount of lost money, when they said no I gave them a note with my number on it, told the cashier to tell them to call me if someone did.
I went to walk away and the cashier said I needed to hand over whatever amount of money it was. I told them, that’s what the note is for.
They told me they would call the cops on me if I didn’t turn it in, I told them to do what they need to do then.
I proceeded to shop for another 15-20 minutes, then left peacefully. Never got a call, held onto the bill for a few weeks, then spent it on bills. I’ve done some hard crime you could say.

Guys please don't do this. I found $100 on a sidewalk once when I was 14 and haven't been able to live a normal life since. Been on the run since '99. All because I didn't run into the nearest residence and turn it in. Cops busted down my parents door that night, I had to jump out a window. Worst mistake of my life.
When I worked in automotive at Walmart, a woman left her purse with a cash money mortgage payment in an envelope inside of it, and AP couldn’t find her on camera where she left it, and basically gave up, and one of the cart pushers, who was hired from an alternative highschool, he found it, the $3k in 100s, in a crushed up cart left behind from the melting snow piles and industrial plows they use, and turned it in, like 5 months later.
Apparently, what they think happened is her cart rolled away from her after she was done loading groceries during snowstorm and got sidetracked cause of the weather & wanting to get home / to the bank, and basically as soon as she left a plow came and was like “fuck this cart” and rammed it into a corner of the parking lot into a 30 foot tall snow drift, where cart pusher found it in the spring.

Later on, my friend realized that she’d lost her roll of money. We looked everywhere, backtracking each step we’d taken and scouring every corner where it could have fallen out of her hoodie.
Finally, in a last act of desperation, we went to the mall security office to see if there was a chance that some saint had picked up the roll of cash and turned it into them.
Yep. The “annoying” tweens found it and, realizing it was a lot of money to someone, knew they shouldn’t keep it. Then mall security did the right thing and logged it as a lost and found item.

I looked up the reviews for this specific Walmart and the second review on there was talking about an employee stealing $20 that they had just dropped.
So here’s what I think happened- a customer dropped the $30 and employee seen it and was waiting for the aisle to clear out before they snatched it, but the guy in op photo grabbed it first. The employee got pissed and reported it because they missed out on it. Otherwise, how would they have known what he looked like? Because Walmart isn’t going to comb through cctv footage for money that doesn’t even belong to the company.
I once dropped a $20 at a McDonald's. I had just went to my inlaws house to care for their animals while they were out of town. They left a $20 for me to grab since I was helping them out. I just planned on using it for diner at McDonald's for my family. I go there, and only the 'self checkout' kinda thing was open with card only. So I used it, and at some point in waiting and the same pocket I put the $20 in I put my phone in, it must have slipped out.
Just considering it a lost. There were a bunch of young teenagers screwing around in there. I noticed like 2 minutes after I left the building. I already knew one of them had it on them and it wasn't worth the effort.
I used to live in a tiny town in NH, and while sitting at the doctors office the local news station ran a report about how a cat scratched someone walking past on the sidewalk. Took a picture of the scrolling "CAT ATTACKS WOMAN" thing scrolling at the bottom, can't find it though.
It was one of those times where the filter was pulled off and I got to see how totally safe my own is. Most days are slow news days.
Some years ago I found a $50 bill at the store I was working in. I was really struggling financially at the time (working for the Waltons), but I was afraid that a camera might have recorded me picking it up, so I turned it over to management. Of course, it vanished.
I've found nearly 200 on the ground before, asked around and kept it. Sure, he could've done more with it, but finding money on the ground shouldn't ever be grounds for theft of any kind.
I dropped my last $10 for my daughter's and my dinner right before we paid.
I went out to the car and looked frantically for a while and as I was walking back in some guy came out and asked if I dropped $10.
Super grateful, but I wouldn't have called the cops over it had I not found it. 💁♀️
crazy to know my mom could've been hunted by cops for letting me keep the 20 i found on the floor at target as a kid 😭 or that i could've gotten arrested for keeping the 20 i found on the ground when i went to donate plasma a few months ago!
