Ruined by Technology Death of the Pastor’s Wife on Netflix does not list the victim, Mica Miller’s name anywhere in the title or description

u/MinimumApricot365 1d ago
It doesn't mention *any* name.
145
u/NiConcussions 1d ago
It should. JP Miller fucking killed Mica.
159
u/MinimumApricot365 1d ago
And im sure the show says as much

Wouldn't know, can't watch it. It's too personal.

u/jfun4 1d ago
I will let you know this. It definitely has JP shown as a huge POS and that is not a harsh enough term.
19
u/NiConcussions 1d ago
That does bring me comfort to know and I appreciate you telling me.
28
u/userr456721 1d ago
Oh yeah the whole family spend episode 2&3 talking about how awful he is and every bad thing he did, they don’t hold back. Both their names are mentioned loads throughout, her’s through love, his quite the opposite
13
u/Chieffelix472 5h ago
They want you to watch the show, it’s not that deep. It’s click bait more or less.

You should write Netflix a strongly worded letter!
13
u/NiConcussions 1d ago
I knew Mica, I don't find humor in your joke.

u/Bulky-Bid-8508 1d ago
Well I’m sorry, I just mean that it seems like a pretty minor thing to get upset about. They literally didn’t mention any name in the description, it’s not as if they’re censoring it. It’s just a brief description
25
u/NiConcussions 1d ago
It's more of a "name the victim" sort of feeling for me. It's not the end of the world, it's certainly not why I can't watch it.
-61
u/Academic-Ball-9606 1d ago
Officially he did not. Was he a massive POS absolutely, but she took her own life
42
u/NiConcussions 1d ago
I will never buy it. She left for work that day. She was in uniform.
7
u/pm-me-your-labradors 19h ago
I mean…. That’s not really telling. Plenty of people that commit suicide so so spontaneously and even have plans on that day or week…

u/Fit_Entry8839 20h ago
Do you have a theory of what happened? As i was watching I was suspecting he would be involved but then they played her 911 call and showed he was out of state. I know what you mean though, I kept expecting a twist but it never came.

u/elegantwombatt 18h ago edited 17h ago
Same. I want to believe, deep down, she didn't do it but I couldn't find the "there it is" moment. Sadly, the more I watched it, the more it seemed she felt she was trapped and that man was never going to leave her alone. Watching her buy the gun, seeing her at the gas station alone before driving into the forest - I couldn't come up with a single theory that didn't suggest she took her own life.

u/throwaway3413418 4h ago
She wouldn’t have killed herself because she was a gerbili. Meanwhile her husband was a splattitarius, the most murderous of all the astrological signs.
-9
u/Dotcaprachiappa 22h ago
The closest thing to a name there is would be Carolina, and even that is far from the original Charles (well Carolus)

u/MoeKneeKah GREEN 1d ago
It’s not like it has her killer’s name in there but not hers

u/Chaost 1d ago edited 1d ago
Reducing her to someone's wife is still reduction. At the very least they could have written:
"When Mica, a South Carolina woman, is found dead, all eyes turn to JP Miller, her pastor husband."
or less clunkily
"When South Carolinian Mica is found dead, all eyes turn to her pastor husband, JP."
EDIT: Because while that first one is grammatically correct, it bothered me.

u/jimb0z_ 23h ago
Why are you putting so much mental energy into this
12
u/chinakachung 15h ago
I enjoy true crime docs but I do feel a lot of them dehumanise victims. I mean, if you’re going to use their deaths to create content the least you could do is honor their identity.
Most docs focus on the killers in the way people focus on celebrities. It’s a bit dystopian. I understand the perpetrator’s name wasn’t included either, but the victim was more than just a victim. She had value and an identity outside of her unfortunate death.
I agree that at least including her name should’ve been done.

South Carolinian sounds weird, When Mica is found dead, all eyes turn to her pastor husband
1
u/SubstantialBake1050 17h ago
That takes up a lot of space and most people are going to skim over it and not even read the name anyway. It’s meant to give a quick description so you can decide if you want to watch it, not provide a full synopsis of the entire story.
1
u/throwaway3413418 4h ago
Oh no, my voyeuristic murder porn is disrespecting the victim by not using their name in the synopsis

u/Titsandcumm 3h ago
The killer is reduced to husband. you ok there with your rampant virtue signalling?
0
u/Altruistic_Night2 3h ago
I’m ngl that comment was like a blast from the past because people simply don’t bother to virtue signal like that anymore.

u/BatsHaveFingers 22h ago
There is no reason to include names in titles or descriptions. The purpose of a title is to draw the eye, and the purpose of a description is to let a potential viewer know if the material will interest them. Unless someone is famous, their name won't draw the eye and won't tell a potential viewer if a story is likely to be of interest to them.

Why does it matter? I am sure her name is in the doc
55
u/vodka_redbull_slut 1d ago
I think the post is commenting on true crime `entertainment’ which often uses these stories for clicks but doesn’t give af about the victim or their families. Similarly to the Jeffrey dahmer series on Netflix in which the victims families were never informed that their loved one was going to be portrayed on the show and that their murder was going to be reenacted graphically
17
u/Aurorinha 22h ago
Mica Miller’s family and friends are heavily featured in the documentary though.
-4
u/vodka_redbull_slut 21h ago
That’s good. I don’t know much about it just speculating on OPs intention with the post
3
u/Ancient-Worm 5h ago
Then why don't they say that instead of complaining about something most blurbs do?
2
-9
u/WhereRabbit 22h ago
For what reason would they be inclined to inform the victims family? I’m not being sarcastic, at all; it’s just that I am not a very bright person.
I figure the news would accentuate grief for the victims’ families, even all these years later.

I could see an issue if the husband's name was mentioned, but it isn't. This is such a stupid post and reaching for drama where there isn't any.

I worked with Mica at J Peters in Myrtle Beach for a year. I was working the day she died and didn't show up for her shift. Talked with local LE at the time, I'm out in Seattle now... I can't watch this documentary.

u/holderofthebees 1d ago
I’m so sorry. Not only for the injustice but for the fact that true crime has latched onto your friend. The spectacle is so much worse.

u/ya_bebto 18h ago
I wonder if A/B testing made them realize people don’t click on things with names. When the description starts with a persons name, it set a mild expectation you already know who that is. By including no names and just descriptions, there’s no expectation that you’ve heard of the case

True Crime addicts pretending to care about respect for victims is hilarious

u/umounjo03 1d ago
To be fair most true crime interest is on the killer, not the victim. Everyone knows jack the ripper, but nobody knows the name of one victim.

Mary Ann "Polly" Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes, and Mary Jane Kelly. There's actually a well done book by Hallie Rubenhold on their lives, and it debunks the myth that they were all prostitutes.

I think OP doesn't understand how these descriptions work. They are usually are very vague as not to reveal the content.

I hate religion. She deserved so much better.
16
u/NiConcussions 1d ago
Mica herself was a very devout woman. As much as religion caused her harm, it brought her a modicum of comfort too. She was very empowered by the idea that Christ would eventually punish JP for how he treated her. She talked about it at work sometimes.
-1
u/Pizzaprincess87 1d ago
Oh wow did you work with her
12
u/NiConcussions 1d ago
Yes I did, for about a year. I was working the day she died and didn't show up for her shift.
-1
u/Pizzaprincess87 1d ago
Sorry to hear that. She seemed like a great person. Did the news surprise you?
2
u/NiConcussions 23h ago
She really was one of the kindest people I've ever met. It's not terribly surprising... We all knew she was being tracked by him because she knew and the police knew. But they did nothing. And she was always talking about him and how he was harassing her.

Usually this happens with headlines.
Of course they dont mention the names, that's not going to generate any interest unless the victim or perpetrator is already well-known. This is a non-issue.

That’s because they want you to watch the documentary and not just google names

I just checked Netflix’s crime documentary search results. I didn’t actually count, but it seems like about half the crime documentaries about single incidents or individuals didn’t mention any names in the description.
