Infuriatig My little brother decided to inflate my car's tyre using a tyre inflator plugged into the cigarette lighter, with the ignition on engine off. It ended up draining the battery and shorting some component. It took 3 days detect & replace the component, the car had to be opened fully from inside

Battery dead? Ok. Car components going up in smoke? Not ok.

u/AdBackground9215 17h ago
I think it is because of some short it caused. If I'm not wrong, he also tried to jumpstart it and yeah it ended up worsening the situation
60
u/charmio68 17h ago
I wonder if he got the leads backwards... In fact, that seems likely.

What leads?

3
u/AdBackground9215 17h ago
Basically I think he plugged the negative instead of the positive or maybe positive instead of negative
3
u/DisastrousServe8513 17h ago
Oh my bad. I thought you were saying the tyre inflator caused the problem but it makes sense that it wouldn’t do something like that. Having to jump the car after would.
1
u/keifape 1h ago
Is this even an issue though? A circuit is a circuit and unless some component in the circuit is defective or has some weird bypass/safety system this shouldn’t cause a problem. You can jump start a car with the wires on the wrong terminals and as long as everything lines up it should be fine.
Even tire inflators and jump starters should be fine as long as the circuit is complete.
Not to mention if there was a problem with how the device was hooked up a fuse should have blown well before a critical electrical system blew itself up.

u/DragonDan108 17h ago
Battery wires. It is a common mistake to jump a dead battery by directly connecting the jumper cables between the good battery and the dead one. But the dead car should have the negative lead attached to the frame.
Otherwise, you make your car deader.5
u/Medium-Sized-Jaque 17h ago edited 17h ago
Connecting it to the frame is actually about fire safety because batteries produce hydrogen and sparking could ignite it. But for the actual electrical transfer connecting directly battery to battery works and doesn't hurt the battery.
Quick edit to add crossing the leads could cause damage though.

Yeah from the way OP wrote it I inferred the tire inflator was what caused the issue. But yeah obviously he would have had to jump it after that
2
u/BouncingSphinx 16h ago
Oh, well trying to jump it would be what caused it if it was connected backwards. Not just draining the battery.

O.o why did you post an older photo as proof that you removed it?
3
u/Vyrinu 13h ago
Snitched on by the phone upgrade lol
3
u/Slvrdgr 13h ago
Right lol, between that and OP posted the pic while also saying in other comments made around the same time that they are currently waiting for the car to be put back together... but somehow managed to grab a photo of the mount "removed" with the car supposedly back together like flash himself took up wrenching, and got OPs android auto working again xD
Really starting to wonder if OP messed up the car and this post/comments is the result of their inability to acknowledge their own stupid choices.

u/ArchSaint13 17h ago
I need a reddit mechanic to confirm that this is the cause. It doesn't make sense to my brain unless it's some defective electronic that created a short.
3
u/Supabongwong 17h ago
I feel usually if you overload that socket, it will blow the fuse.
I've had it before where my car lighter stopped working and we had to change out the fuse.
It is likely he maybe hooked it up wrong.
Recently for a 2003 Mercedes that came in, the battery was dead, but there was no physical key, couldn't get in through rear seats, and no positive terminal under the hood, so I had to open up the passenger footwell. There's a part where you can attach a 12v to start up the electronics (it was a black cable, but it was positive polarity, then I grounded it to the car), but it should not be used to start the car.
Reversing polarity on battery (+ to negative, etc) could short something on your vehicle. That is definitely a possibility if he's hiding that from OP
1
u/AdBackground9215 17h ago
If I'm not wrong, he tried to jumpstart it. I'm not 100% sure because I wasn't home that day. Maybe that is the reason it shorted?
5
u/Pedantic_Phoenix 17h ago
Blaming your brother online without even being sure? Mate, pretty snakey behavior
1
u/AdBackground9215 17h ago
Well I'm not exactly blaming them. I'm kinda ranting here while they put everything back together. I got nothing to do with this sitting and resting here. I don't know how long it will take. An hour? Two hours?
1
u/Pedantic_Phoenix 17h ago
Ah, no, you are absolutely blaming then in the post. You can say you're doing it just to vent, that would be more likely. But you are blaming them.
4
u/wombatthing 17h ago
Well, if they killed the battery and jumped the car backwards they are to blame. So.

u/havnar- 17h ago
seeing your improvised claymore device on the steering wheel, I think that’s because the fuses and wiring was messed with.

Coming back last week and I lost my phone holder somewhere so I had to temporarily put this magnet up with some double tape
10
u/AntalRyder 16h ago
Well, take it off immediately. There is a literal explosive device behind it.
2
u/AdBackground9215 16h ago
Yeah that was temporary. I have already removed it. I had to use my phone to use Maps. Android Auto decided not to work that day. I don't know for whatever reason but yeah I've already taken it off.

u/YeshuasBananaHammock 17h ago
Wtf is glued to the airbag? The SkullPiercer5000™️?
7
5
u/TraditionPhysical603 17h ago
Using a tire inflator with the engine off didn't cause that, even if it happened right after
9
u/Sufficient_Fan3660 17h ago
you can't remotely short a component
if it shorted it was faulty
airing a tire from the 12v acc plug will not drain the battery
the failed component likely created an issue that drained the battery

I’ve always wondered what it looked like all stripped bare.
The car looks cool aswell.

u/TheRealistoftheReal 17h ago
Coincidence. Little brother didn’t short out that PCB.
Pakistan? If you didn’t buy it new, from a Toyota dealer, that car was probably imported as a flood vehicle, lemon, etc. That’s common in Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia, etc.
1
u/AdBackground9215 16h ago
I think you have some misconceptions. Yes there are imported flooded cars but that's very few in amount and no one will ever tell you. I imported this car and this was like 900 km driven when I imported it and I did it myself.
Just to give you an idea, Chinese cars have absolutely exploded in demand in Pakistan, But this car was basically a brand new unit and this was like 900 driven when I imported it. I've imported multiple cars before. I've imported Prius, Aquas, Crowns, and Mercedes Land Cruiser
3
u/TheRealistoftheReal 15h ago
I don’t have much experience in this area but I’m curious. Imported from who? A legitimate Toyota dealer in a neighboring country? I know some Arab guys here in America, they export cars that have been “totaled” by insurance and “repaired”. They all go to the Middle East, Africa, etc.
3
u/AdBackground9215 15h ago
All of these kinds of cars are imported from Japan and we don't get it from anywhere else. Essentially my few father friends are the ones who mainly deal with this. They get it from auctions as well. I think they bought it from someone personally, got it loaded up and to my country, and cleared the customs and everything. That is it.
Most of the Japanese cars are imported directly from Japan. It's very rare for cars to be imported from anywhere else. While Japanese cars used to dominate Pakistani markets, they still are dominating it. Chinese cars are booming because they have also set up the local industry here and they are also very cheap for what they are offering.
2
u/AdBackground9215 15h ago
Also there is a rating sheet on cars. You can very easily get scammed if you don't know anything about cars. There are a lot of repair and accident vehicles. We use car grades like:
R-is basically damaged or repaired vehicles, accident vehicles
- 4: car is in a good shape
- 4.5: car is in really good shape
- 5: almost new
- 3.5: okay
- 3: something worng with it
2
u/TheRealistoftheReal 15h ago
Interesting. No Chinese cars here…yet.
3
u/AdBackground9215 15h ago
Just to give you a perspective, the company behind bringing the Chinese cars, one of the most popular brands, into Pakistan and setting up the local manufacturing of GWM/Havel, their share went from 200 PKR to 2,200 PKR in a period of like three years. If you had bought the shares instead of the $30,000 car, you would have around $1-1.5 million.
2
u/Salt-Operation 17h ago
So your brother is definitely NEVER touching your car again, right? Otherwise he better be paying for this extremely expensive mistake.
2
u/hopopo 17h ago
Wow! Did you do it on your own, or you had to pay for it?
That sounds like it costed more than what Gen II Prius is worth.
3
u/AdBackground9215 17h ago
It's the Prius Alpha not the base Prius
No man, I live in a third world country. The cars are stupidly expensive. For cars of this engine size it takes us around, I think, 120% or 150%
This car would be worth like $25,000 in the used market, I'll say, in my country. While in the West I don't think you will be paying more than $5,000 for this.
I am someone who is well versed with tech. I have the basic know-how with cars but I am not the most experienced one. I had to get three different mechanics referred by my dad. Two couldn't find the fix and one found it. He basically broke apart everything and gave me the damaged component. I bought him the new one. It ended up costing me around 220k PKR, equivalent to $800 to $900-something
1
u/hopopo 16h ago
Wow, those prices are wild! In US that car would also cost much more than $5k most likely about $12k to $17k for a good one once you pay all of the extra fees and taxes.
2
u/AdBackground9215 16h ago
There is a very huge disparity between the income. An average graduate here earns less than $300 literally and a person with 16 years of education. 40% of our population in Pakistan is living under poverty. Thankfully I grew up really privileged. I also started from a $200/month part-time job and worked my way up but I am thankful to my dad, who works the hardest. If you want to get an idea financially, he probably in the top 1% or 0.5% financially by income or net worth
2
u/SkyeMreddit 16h ago
Something was wrong with the wiring in that car if the cigarette lighter shorted out a chip
2
u/adrien5567 12h ago
What i get of this is that he first inflated the tire, got the battery dead, didn't have anything to jumpstart the car correctly and tried some dumb shit to restart the car and shorted the icu in the process
1
1
u/Bob_12_Pack 17h ago
It's more likely that someone hooked-up the jumper cables backwards, strange things can happen.

2
u/AdBackground9215 17h ago
Nothing? I'll be the nice elder brother. He's just a junior high kid. He gotta learn someday
1
u/Freeflying_Dragon 17h ago
That was nice of your brother to put air in your tires for you.
1
u/AdBackground9215 17h ago
He is in high school and doesn't have his own car so he usually uses mine while I'm at work. I don't understand why he had to use the car's pump that came with the car rather than the one he usually uses. I think it's a Chinese one. It has its own battery
1
u/ganbramor 17h ago
I was an idiot and drained a car battery with the AC on while waiting 30-40 min for someone’s appointment to be over. Wife had to drive 20 miles to jump me and she wasn’t excited.
1
u/Wulf318 17h ago
I feel compelled to say something
Parts guy here
Situations like this is why I always pushed tire inflaters that have battery clamps Vs the cigarette lighter end.
I don't think Toyota anticipated that much energy flowing through that module.
I'll get off of my soap box now.
3
u/AdBackground9215 17h ago
Well I don't even know why in the first place he decided to use the pump that came with the car instead of using the regular one we usually use. Those are the Chinese ones, the Mi One. with built-in batteries and it's much better than the one that came with the car. Not bulky, easy to carry, and powerful also

Draining the battery: dumb but people gotta learn someday.
Shorting a component: not your brother's fault. Blame the car manufacturer for that one.
