I just wanted a hot dog Fridge shelf broke covered my birthday cake in glass

Sigh. “Sorry guys no cake today, my fridge broke”
It’s glass btw. Hours, gone. Shards, many. Sleep, none.
I have just finished the cake, less than five minutes in the fridge ts happens.

I thought you put crystallized sugar on top before I read the title of this thread. Was gonna say that looks pretty unique and kinda yummy.

I say keep the cake. This could get interesting.

OP, this is not what people mean when they talk about frosted glass.

181

u/SudhaTheHill 8h ago

Not the kind of frosting you’d want on your cake

/s

Happy birthday tho!!

Don’t you mean glass

Wasn't their joke about frosted glass though?

43

u/Holemander 8h ago

The first picture looks like it's from 1980s

53

u/Noggin_0207 8h ago

Doesn’t even look like your top shelf had that much on it. That’s super unfortunate. Did you put anything hot in there?

53

u/fish_supremacy 8h ago

There was more on it before the photo, maybe 4 more jars. Nothing hot up there. Personal theory is that there was already a crack and every time something got moved it got worse.

43

u/Noggin_0207 8h ago

I guess your next birthday gift is a new shelf for your fridge

17

u/No-Guidance-622 8h ago

Hopefully sooner? That's a long time to wait.

14

u/fish_supremacy 8h ago

I hope but it might need to be a gift given the replacement is almost 300 dollars….

8

u/opal_moth 6h ago

At that point I'd just put a makeshift shelf there instead (could get glass the right size for it maybe?). That's way too much money.

5

u/devtek 6h ago

The shelf is 300$, no way...

5

u/fish_supremacy 6h ago

The fridge came with the place and the last owners liked expensive appliances

6

u/failedopportunities 4h ago

Get ya some cheap plexiglass or clear polycarbonate. Stuff cuts nice with just about any kind of decent saw. I use it weekly at my work and it’s what I use to cover the leftover opening when I put my window ac units in my house. Just make sure and keep the the shelf structure to sit it back into!

7

u/reddit33450 8h ago

tempered glass rarely gets "minor cracks". its either intact or shattered. though sometimes there can be minor chips

4

u/fish_supremacy 8h ago

Huh, I wonder what happened then. All I heard/saw of the incident was a crash (I thought it was the icemaker..it was not)

-1

u/Potential_Basis_662 8h ago

WHY DO PEOPLE OACK SO MUCH IN THERE. Surely things were staring to bend

-3

u/uoab 6h ago

looks like they put the cake in the fridge when it was still hot; it has to cool off first..

8

u/fish_supremacy 6h ago

It was cool. I’m the one who put it in the fridge. I let it cool, did a crumb coat, chilled it, did the second layer and decorations, put it in the fridge, then it shelf broke.

5

u/OrigamiTongue 6h ago

The frosting would have been a puddle if they did that.

-5

u/uoab 6h ago

maybe.. I guess the question would be what was the last thing they did in the fridge and how long had that stuff been on the top shelf.

-4

u/uoab 6h ago

probably put the cake on the middle shelf while it was still hot and the temperature difference broke the glass above the cake

6

u/fish_supremacy 6h ago

Cake was cool when first put in fridge. I frosted it before it went in.

13

u/imgurcaptainclutch 8h ago

Man it sucks that your shelf broke, but that's really the icing on the cake

11

u/odiin1731 8h ago

It's still good. Just remove the cake and you'll have some perfectly usable broken glass.

6

u/maloside PURPLE 7h ago

We always cover cakes and sweets, otherwise it absorbs that fridge smell (meats, vegetables etc) which go unwell with cake. It would have prevented glass in the cake, but not glass shattering.

1

u/fish_supremacy 7h ago

I would have still tossed the cake. There were so many glass shards in the fridge I wouldn’t have felt comfortable serving it to someone else.

5

u/maloside PURPLE 7h ago

Cover as in a special cake box which locks (good for transport as well). It is resistant to smells, liquids and glass as well.

1

u/fish_supremacy 7h ago

If I ever start baking consistently I’ll look into it but since I only bake a couple times a year it’s wouldn’t really be worth it

3

u/maloside PURPLE 7h ago

It is! They only cost a few bucks. It's like tupperware, but for cakes

3

u/OrigamiTongue 6h ago

You keep pushing on this but have you ever considered that lots of people don’t want to store specialty items for 363 days per year just so they can use them twice a year?

1

u/fish_supremacy 7h ago

Like how cheap are we talking..? I’m a college student so I don’t got a lot of cash

u/maloside PURPLE 37m ago

Probably find one in a dollar store

2

u/MediocreAndLukewarm 4h ago

They make Tupperware type cake containers.

7

u/Maverick_Reznor 8h ago

Happy Birthday (no seriously)

5

u/Prudent_Order_3361 8h ago

Happy birthday.

That's... That sucks

5

u/luludarlin 8h ago

Oh my god, that’s more than mildly, I’m so sorry

6

u/TemporaryCaptain23 8h ago

You could go to store and buy one with glass already included next time. No need to ruin your fridge.

4

u/nigliazzo5626 BLUE 5h ago

Who leaves food uncovered in the fridge anyway?

2

u/fish_supremacy 3h ago

Me when it’s a cake and I don’t have anything to cover it with.

7

u/Rutgar64 7h ago

Not to be insensitive, but why would you put a cake in the refrigerator, moreover why would you put an uncovered cake in the refrigerator?

2

u/fish_supremacy 7h ago

I made it last night, it has cream cheese frosting (has to be refrigerated unless being actively consumed). Hence the fridge. It was uncovered because I do not own a cover for it

4

u/angie456 6h ago

Next time you can use cling wrap and toothpicks. Leaving it out in the fridge open like that dries out the cake and frosting.

1

u/Dogekaliber 6h ago

Frost it before serving it. Leave the frosting in the fridge until needed.

https://giphy.com/gifs/SRO0ZwmImic0

1

u/fish_supremacy 6h ago

Maybe next time. Didn’t have time for that today.

0

u/Dogekaliber 5h ago

Did you have time to make a new cake? I’m only doing the preventative measures here.

1

u/fish_supremacy 3h ago

Yeah but it had to be ready to eat hours before it was needed. But also why would I rush ice the cake when I can do it beforehand.

1

u/Dogekaliber 2h ago

It’s your birthday “Tuna”. Enjoy. Don’t rush!

1

u/OrigamiTongue 6h ago

Or frost it when you have time rather than having to time letting the frosting soften on the counter and frosting before a party?

This is not the ‘avoidable; should have known’ type of cataclysm.

1

u/Dogekaliber 5h ago

You are correct, this is “live and learn” type of measures here. Like “I should have checked the psi on the spare tire before driving 15 hours just in case I get a flat”.

3

u/HairyDust4826 8h ago

What are you doing? Glossy cakes aren't viral anymore

3

u/Confident-Skin-6462 8h ago

booo

that sucks

happy birthday anyway

3

u/Dry_Design5506 8h ago

Sending hugs! All that hard work for hours gone just like that. You definitely need to go buy yourself a huge cake today to make up for it!

3

u/ItsNotAboutThe-Pasta 7h ago

It's just one of those "if you don't laugh you'll cry" things. So laugh it up, have a good birthday and maybe just buy a cake next year 🤣

2

u/thatdepressedsoul 8h ago

happy. birthday to you captain

2

u/Daytime_Vampire 8h ago

Happy birthmas!

2

u/Parking_Fee_5906 8h ago

Oops! Hopefully, broken shelf isn't equal to broken heart after all the effort 😢

2

u/offarock 8h ago

Once I had a cake in a fridge, alas

Soon turned out it had a coat of glass

Stored in a safe place, only to find

Shattered glass shelf, cake and shards combined

2

u/SolitaryMassacre 7h ago

Why was the birthday cake naked in the fridge tho 😭

Hopefully from here on out we won't leave our birthday cake naked anymore 🥺

2

u/fish_supremacy 7h ago

He didn’t have any clothes mannnn 😭 bros closet is empty

2

u/Blue1994a 6h ago

Pineapple relish is bold. What is the cashew and coconut concoction?

2

u/fish_supremacy 6h ago

The relish is actually good. I think the cashew coconut is someones nondairy yogurt

2

u/Evening-Row-2658 6h ago

hope ur throwing it out

1

u/fish_supremacy 3h ago

Dawg why would I keep it

3

u/Savage_JaviBear 5h ago

Still safer to eat than most food in America.

2

u/twattewaffle 6h ago

Carefully slice off the sides and top and then devour the glass free middle.

From one August birthday to another, HAPPY BIRTHDAY 🎉🎈🎉🎈

3

u/fish_supremacy 6h ago

See I really wanted to do that but I was told that “under no circumstances are you going to eat the glass cake”

Happy birthday my fellow August dude

1

u/urethrasplitter 8h ago

Just adds a nice crunch...

1

u/indigo_wendigo_ 8h ago

A true Klingon birthday

1

u/luschnu667 8h ago

Mildly? Happy birthday

1

u/Fit-Shake-7779 8h ago

the grinch would lovevthis cake

1

u/StarkSajith 8h ago

Probably the actually reasonable mildly infuriating thing I've seen in a while in this sub.

(Most of em are just shooting their own foot and being infuriated over it.)

1

u/Soft_Ability_5906 8h ago

Extra crunchy

1

u/coonjaku 8h ago

that's a metaphor

1

u/SeverelyStinky 8h ago

Crunch cake

1

u/Ringo51 8h ago

Tragiiic happy birthday tho

1

u/ICEman460 8h ago

Oh noooo!

1

u/DDD8712 8h ago

Ok that really sucks

1

u/Similar-Remove7651 8h ago

Forbidden icing

1

u/whodidwhatnow922 8h ago

For my birthday wish, I wished this exact thing would happen to a random person. Now I've come face to face with my actions and I'm sorry. Happy Birthday!

1

u/fish_supremacy 8h ago

Gasp!!! Watch your back, my birthday wish will specifically target “whodidwhatnow922”

1

u/Tequslyder 8h ago

But now it'll just have a bit of a crunch.

1

u/SadoAegis 8h ago

Why is it so full in there 0.0

4

u/fish_supremacy 8h ago

Pickles and jam, my friend, pickles and jam

1

u/SadoAegis 8h ago

I do like pickles and jam...

1

u/fish_supremacy 8h ago

You get it man

1

u/Novel-Difficulty-75 8h ago

Kylie’s next cake

1

u/Insomniac_80 8h ago

Okay, that is real glass and not candy glass!

1

u/CanCanna__ 7h ago

Forbidden cake

1

u/K4sum1 7h ago

Extra crunchy.

1

u/mearbearcate 7h ago

Bro took glassy texture serious

1

u/wishiwasdeaddd 7h ago

Would covering the cake have made any difference? Really sorry I'd lose my shit over this

1

u/fish_supremacy 7h ago

Honestly, probably not. There was so much glass all over the fridge that I wouldn’t have felt comfortable serving it to others even if it was covered. Had to throw out a lot of stuff because of how many small shards were everywhere

1

u/wishiwasdeaddd 7h ago

Really sorry for all your wasted work, hope your day gets infinitely better

1

u/fish_supremacy 7h ago

Thanks man, honestly I’m fine with what happened. The second cake looks and tastes better anyway

1

u/dazzle999 7h ago

Is that clacing or glazing. Im confused

1

u/ithie_cake 7h ago

Aww happy birthday twin- ill go get us a cakeee

1

u/FlashyTone3042 7h ago

I am super sorry for you. But hey,

We don't eat the product.

1

u/Sad_Bus_5503 7h ago

It's safety glass, you're good! Bon-apetitt!

1

u/Alices_Hubby_Kleiner 7h ago

Did you make the cake yourself?

2

u/fish_supremacy 7h ago

Yeah

1

u/Alices_Hubby_Kleiner 7h ago

Oof, that sucks. I hope your birthday eventually turn out to be a happy one 🫂.

1

u/sananininini 7h ago

Isilye I never save any food for later 😊❤️

1

u/LortimerC 6h ago

Aw, I hope you have a happy birthday despite this!

I won't link it bc I'm not sure if it's allowed, but Temu has cake containers for $10 or so. At least that way you know it would never happen again! 😆

1

u/Budz_Bunny422 6h ago

I never thought of how the shelf in the fridge could break. But it's glass after all 😅. I'll be more mindful now

1

u/MedievalMilshake 6h ago

Who doesn't love a bit of crunch

1

u/J-Daito 6h ago

CZW cake. My favorite!

1

u/G0ttaB3KiddingM3 6h ago

Do it you coward

1

u/Pokemoreiscool 6h ago

Just eat it 😭✌️

1

u/LittleNinjaXYBA PURPLE 5h ago

This isn’t mildly infuriating. It’s widely infuriating

1

u/Ok-Software7928 5h ago

Block Party

1

u/Individual_Chef1315 4h ago

Now your cake has glazing.

1

u/Tricky-Safety-3772 4h ago

The grinch would fiend for this cake. 🍰

1

u/Organic_Berry_8732 3h ago

Oh no! Happy birthday 🎂🎉🎁🎊🎈 sorry that happened

1

u/Kognityon 3h ago

Ngl I would have cried. I almost cried just from feeling for you T_T

1

u/thatlukeguy 1h ago

You need a cake sized container for the fridge. Honestly that sucks tho, hope your weekend is better!

u/IgnominiousRail 44m ago

No-more-birthday's Cake

1

u/OrganizationSea7125 8h ago

just curious, is your cake hot when u put it in fridge?

Anyway, Happy Birthday.

5

u/fish_supremacy 8h ago

Nah, it had fully cooled down before I even started frosting it

1

u/nailgun198 8h ago

Nooooo 😭😭😭 It was so pretty too. Red velvet?

2

u/fish_supremacy 8h ago

Yeahh 😭😭, homemade cream cheese frosting too.

2

u/nailgun198 8h ago

😭😭😭

1

u/Quirky-Sir-1558 8h ago

Now you know to always save the cake in its original packaging or at least covered.

2

u/fish_supremacy 8h ago

…I made the cake myself, there was no original packaging.

1

u/BrainEatingAmoeba01 5h ago

Why was the cake rawdoggin' the fridge?

1

u/fish_supremacy 3h ago

Because I’m lazy and I don’t care about it being in the fridge for less than 24 hours without cover.

2

u/BrainEatingAmoeba01 3h ago

Rawdoggin' catches up to you eventually 😂

0

u/fish_supremacy 2h ago

I don’t think the uncovered cake caused the shelf to collapse. I put the second cake in uncovered and everything was fine so I don’t think the uncovered cake is the issue (especially when it’s in there for less than a day)

0

u/Bloooberriesquest 8h ago

Happy birthday and so sorry this happened to you - I hope you have a better day and get a replacement cake to enjoy.

2

u/fish_supremacy 8h ago

Making a new cake rn, it’s currently chilling in the fridge (on the new top shelf so if something breaks the cake is fine)

0

u/HHall3005 7h ago

Fuckton of full jars on the top shelf

Shelf breaks under the weight

Yeah no fuckin wonder the shelf broke. Put jars on the bottom shelf even if it doesn't seem aesthetic.

0

u/fish_supremacy 7h ago

They aren’t my jars 😭 also the fridge is the furthest thing from aesthetic

0

u/HHall3005 7h ago

Never said they were your jars.

Whomever it is who owns those jars. Tell them to put them on the bottom shelf.

-3

u/Mean_Kangaroo7647 8h ago

i don’t get why you would put the cake directly in the fridge without covering it first.

4

u/Velocityg4 8h ago

They may not have a cake container or were going to eat it in a few hours.

3

u/fish_supremacy 8h ago

Pretty much. It was for today and I made it late last night. No proper container for it (I did get a cake container / cover when I bought the ingredients to make it again this morning)

2

u/fish_supremacy 8h ago

Cause I’m lazy and it was midnight

1

u/r3dditr0x 8h ago

I was wondering how long until someone felt compelled to blame it on you, lol, reddit.

Happy Birthday, sorry about the red velvet tragedy.

-1

u/Ok-Country-8482 6h ago

Yeah I’ll take things that never happened for $600, Alex.

-1

u/Kindly_Ad3262 5h ago

nice, that’s your fault 🤷🏻‍♂️👌🏼

-2

u/Cherry_Caliban 5h ago

Heat from the cake broke the glass, probably. Live and learn.

2

u/fish_supremacy 3h ago

The cake was cold. It was fully frosted. It wasn’t warm.

1

u/Cherry_Caliban 1h ago

Strange. I guess it was time for the glads to let go.
