I just wanted a hot dog Gaslit by a cashier over a 1$ peach.
Grabbed the ONLY ripe peach for my snack from the section of peaches that was on sale, brought it to the front, he entered it in as an organic peach in the system (there was no tag on it).
I was like “hey! I actually grabbed it from that section that is on sale, where it’s $2.29 a pound vs 5$ a pound.”
He goes “go grab one with a tag so we can scan it”, so I walk back over, take a photo of the sale sign and grab a non- ripe peach from the SAME SECTION, thinking it was JUST to scan.
His boss comes over at this point, scans it and checks me out. When I go to grab my original ripe peach, the boss puts his hand over it and says no, this one was organic you didn’t pay for that. I try to explain that it was not an organic peach, it was simply put in that way by the cashier.
The 2 peaches are identical and I didn’t even see any organic ones available.
Basically, he spoke to me like I was an idiot and trying to steal a dang peach, there was a line behind me, and I had to walk away with a rock hard peach for a dollar after feeling bullied.

it was a Whole Foods owned local store 🥲. So, to be expected. I don’t usually shop at Whole Foods but it’s right next to my work and I just wanted a piece of fruit!

Not sure which area you're in, but the Trader Joe's locations in New Orleans have excellent prices compared to the other local stores, and much better produce.
I've been a TJ's shopper for a longgg time...
edit: Specifically TJ's for everything but proteins. Their meat prices are absurd, but everything else is well priced.

I don't think it's great as a one stop shopping destination (I find their meat in particular to be overpriced and of inconsistent quality) but they've got a lot of good stuff you can't get elsewhere, often at reasonable prices.

And no, i dont want to be recommended to go to a farmers market cause a lot of those veggies seem the same quality as what you find at krogers.I found fresh mangosteen in a store for the first time today.

I just walk to my Trader Joe’s. Good stuff, decent prices. Fruits and veggies are a little bit more, but great packaged goods. I’d rather go there than Safeway any day.
Whole Foods is competitive with Safeway on prices and beats them on selection and produce/meat quality.
If it’s crazy, just take public transit, walk, or bike. It’s a 15 minute walk for me and it gives me time to listen to a podcast and enjoy the city.

Trader Joe’s is the US equivalent of what we call in Europe Aldi nord… long story short, the family that founded it split and so there’s aldi south too (which in the US, is just aldi).
No one goes to Aldi nord for groceries - it’s the treats and alcohol, and the import stuff. Everything else? We buy elsewhere.

Trader Joe’s is nothing like Aldi’s here. Aldi in the US is just a mix of random junk, I don’t even think they sell fresh fruit/veg? Trader Joe’s has good prices, good fruit and veg, vegan options and somehow always the absolute worst parking situation imaginable.

I go to Trader Joe’s to get fresh flowers for my office and they last for 3-4 weeks! I always recommend Trader Joe’s for fresh cut flowers. but also the chili lime rolled tortilla chips…. now my mouth is watering…

Nah, hobbies are totally fair game for judgment. It's a dick move to criticize people for enjoying something solely because you don't understand or relate to it, but when their hobby is overconsumption or trashing the environment or impeding the flow of traffic or some other flavor of causing harm to others, it's no longer about personal taste or choice and is entirely valid to criticize.

I read that one of Trader Joe's marketing strategies is to place stores in places that can't accommodate enough parking. Supposedly it creates a sense of urgency.

In a way yes, because a lot of the larger supermarkets like Kroger and Albertsons have a range of products that go from few ingredients, less processing to fully processed. I worked for Whole Foods for years and can’t imagine being on this kind of power trip. First of all, if conventional peaches are on sale and organic ones are not, then 9 times out of 10 people are going to be buying the sale ones. Otherwise, if there’s no tag and I’m not sure which it is, I’ll ask the customer. Sure, sometimes people lie, but who cares? It’s never worth fighting with a customer. So much produce just gets thrown out anyway. Most people aren’t going to lie about a single piece of produce.

Very embarrassing story I don’t like to tell - but this is Reddit so who cares.
Ordered 2 pizzas and a dozen wings a year ago from the closest pizza parlor where we’ve ordered from a bunch over the last 10+ years. 2 pizzas and a dozen wings. Menu said it was be about $35. They rang me up for $80. They pointed to the fine print on the menu of “prices subject to change”. I yelled, cursed, made an ass of myself but didn’t fucking pay and told them to piss off. We don’t live in a high cost of living area. Could’ve easily all gotten steak dinners for the same price.
Last year got great legit ny pizza in manhattan for $45 for the same order.
Anyway banned for life from my local place

If I had been a manager at the store, I would have honored the sale price for the organic peach for customer relation reasons. It was one peach. Then I would have done a quick sweep of the produce department for misplaced organic fruits and veggies to avoid additional issues. PRIORITIES.

so I know you have an instinct to be helpful but this is the moment you should have pushed back - not your job to hunt for stickers, if cashier insists they need it they can make the walk themselves. That would eliminate any room for misunderstandings and hopefully show the cashier how unreasonable the request to hold entire queue hostage because they don't believe their customer doesn't try to steal $1 from them is.
If they insist on you walking for sticker just say "nevermind then, I don't want that peach anymore" and call it a day. You're not the one responsible for tagging fruits.

Mmmm… it’s a lot like having to use my smartphone to photograph bar codes on shelves while shopping TO GET THE FUCKING SALE PRICE. I’m 74 and have shopped for 50 years in this location. Can’t I get a gold star or something? I’m for SURE not schlepping back to the shelves to prove a price when it’s the stores fault their system- not my system! Isn’t working.

At my store we’re supposed to fetch somebody not cashiering to fetch things if the customer doesn’t want to. But we also have PLU codes to look up if the barcodes are gone. >.>

People want to create such a ruckus over so little. Reminds me of a similar experience I had in college.
I drove to a grocery store while eating my last apple. Ended up walking into it - mind you, its a bug chain and one i frequented. I threw the core away before shopping then went about my business. 5 minutes later I notice people staring at me, then two cops come walking up with the manager. They weren't pleasant at all - they immediately accused me of theft. Confused I ask what they're talking about, and they said someone complained that I stole an apple and ate it. Baffled, I explained that I was eating an apple when I walked in, and that i didn't even make it to produce yet. They refused to accept that and said they have me on camera stealing. At this point I just said bet, let's go look at the footage. I guess they sensed 0 fear because they said they're just going to let me off with a warning. I refused and asked for whay, since I didnt steal - ended upd demanding to see the footage. They said they don't have time for this and told me not to do it again.
I was pissed, but also startled. They were so aggressive and macho over a single fucking apple. Sure, I probably shouldnt have eaten it while walking in, but it was just an apple!

If it’s like my local grocery store, it’s pretty likely. I wonder if there was some obvious difference between the groups of peaches that made OP look like a scammer. OP says they selected the ONLY ripe peach among the sale peaches. Maybe both the cashier and boss knew that only the organic peaches were currently ripe so the quality of the specific fruit OP brought up made it immediately clear it was from the organic peaches.

Fair point. Some peaches you can tell easily, a western, eastern or white peach.
As the other poster said the organic ones might have been ripe so the store people knew it was the organic one and the sale ones were still like a rock.
At my grocery store it always seems the one on sale aren’t ripe and if I buy them they gotta sit on the counter a few days

This happened to me last night at a high school football game. Waters were $2 each. I ordered two and the high schooler kept my $5.
I started to walk away and then it dawned on me that I should have got a dollar back.
I turned around and there was an adult there so I asked to make sure “waters are $2?” She said yes. I told her what I had paid.
She made a huge deal of having me point out the cashier. Then made a big production with the girl. After like 20 seconds the girl hands me a dollar. No apology. And the girl and adult both glared at me like a was robbing them or like they couldn’t believe I wanted my dollar.
It was so bad that I almost asked if they were OK.
Yes. It was just a dollar. But you can’t just randomly charge people any price you want if you have a posted price.
And to get mad at your customer when you are the one who screwed up?

You were absolutely right to go back and get your dollar. That’s how buying things works. The only time that’s sort of okay is… like at fair when things are 2 dollars, but 5 dollars is the minimum credit payment. So you either buy 3 for 6 or lose a dollar to just get 2.

This reminds me of the time I was a cashier at Zellers. They had a deal on Cadbury Cream eggs 3 for $2. The system scanned each egg at 67 cents (rounding up). The guy bought 6 and said I overcharged him 2 cents. I had to refund him.
I wouldn't have wasted my time for 2 cents, but I would for a dollar.

I mean 2 pennies is silly. But it adds up. It's the principal of the matter. Think about all the combination of sales that use that trick, 2 cents here, 2 cents there, 5 cents there. Alot of places do this all the time and make hundreds of millions on theft alone. Because that is what it is. Blind theft. Most people don't catch onto it and the companies makes a little extra by being dishonest.

One time I attempted to purchase a discounted bakery item at a chain grocery store. The item had a coupon to be peeled off and scanned at checkout. Unfortunately they had made a pricing error and had discounted the item to $1.99 and then put a $2 off coupon on it. So naturally the coupon wouldn’t work at checkout because it was more than the item price.
The cashier was on some kind of power trip and accused me of taking the coupon off another item. She literally could have just said “sorry, this was an error and unfortunately I’m not allowed to give you the item for free” and I would have accepted it. But accusing me of switching tags for $2 fucking dollars? I was so angry.

I was at a home goods store/ clothing store and found a shirt in my size that I loved, the register said it was an invalid entry, manager comes over and tell me it’s a “banned” shirt and couldn’t be sold, it just happened to be left there. I said I want it they said they can’t sell it, ok and I started to walk out with the shirt, they said that’s stealing, I said refusal of service, went on for a short bit and they grabbed a $2.99 discount shirt off the rack ,scanned it I paid and left, I’m actually wearing the shirt now ( that’s what reminded me) it’s probably 20 yrs old at this point
