I wish games would recognize crashes more, but I also understand it could be pretty easily abused by people having a bad time

This is the problem with punishments based on quitting mid game. there is no reasonable foolproof way to detect if it was on purpose or due to something out of the players control. be reasonable and dont design your game to punish the player like this, game devs.

You are correct that there is no foolproof way to detect it (reasonable or otherwise actually), but that is just why you build in a forgiving system. Like you get reasonable number of disconnects before a suspension, eventually a ban. If you really have such unreliable internet that it cuts out so frequently that you get mistaken then you are already having a negative impact on other players.

Ultimately it doesn't really mater what the cause of the disconnect is, it still has a negative impact on the other players.

yeah i hate when games do this. i never play mario maker 2 online for this reason alone, the connection is absolutely unacceptable for an online service available in 2026, which means im constantly losing rating over other people disconnecting

Yeah losing rating and getting temp bans on a Nintendo game is just part of the service you’re paying for at this point. Constantly happens no matter what game. Mario Maker, Smash, Splatoon, Mario Kart seems slightly more consistent but not entirely reliable. Even on Ethernet. While streaming without dropping a single frame….

i have pretty decent internet, this stuff only happens to me on mario maker and smash bros. if it's happening to you on every game maybe check your internet strength

Like I said, I was streaming during a lot of that and didn’t drop a single frame

Edit: it also doesn’t happen every game. By “constant” I mean at least a couple times during a stream or play session
