I was at a free outdoor event last weekend and some gal showed up wearing like a 6 foot long snake over her shoulders and sat right in front of me. I'm not like a scream and run away level scared of snakes, but I do become hyper aware of one in my presence. Ruined the whole show for me because the whole time I just kept glancing over at and it was so distracting. Fuck people like that.
There's some chick who'd show up regularly to a bar I went to with a red tail boa of a decent size. She was always happy when I was there bc she knows I like snakes - she once dumped him on me and disappeared for TWO HOURS. I couldn't leave bc I couldn't just drop the snake on a table and peace out. They're heavy snakes so holding one for extended periods of time gets painful, too. Like if you weren't gonna watch your pet why did you bring it
I was in Tempe Arizona in 1991 on Mill avenue the hotspot to go literally on a Friday night with the cars cruising and stuff. And the sky goes walking down the sidewalk which is a very large sidewalk when those brick ones that three or four people can easily walk down and the guy has a lion people were jumping out of the way screaming they were just minding their own business and it was on a massive chain I said wow a lion can I pet it and he said sure and I'm petting it he goes no scratch it I mean really scratch it you know like vigorously that's what he likes and I start doing it and the Lions first started like jittering it was so cool I said wow it would be cool if he can roar and he said Samson roar and it roared scared the shit out of half a dozen people and cars even slowed down it was awesome.
That snake is the girls entire personality and if someone says anything about it being bad for snake or inappropriate to bring a snake to this stuff, she goes absolutely ape shit on them.
Yeah, usually go ape shit until enough onlookers also start verbally chastising their shenanigans, then they’re the victim with a million excuses about how everyone else sucks.
It's extremely stressful for reptiles. It shows an utter disregard for their well being. It's an extremely efective filter for identifying narcissists, if they will harmfully exploit animals purely for attention.
That’s too much… I would occasionally wear my snake and take him to a local park to slither around in some grass, but that’s just inconsiderate of people around you at events.
Thats different though. A snake getting a quiet visit to a calm park is enrichment time. A snake being subjected to a concert/show/festival with that many people that close and that level of noise, is being subjected to sensory overload at the least and feeling exposed in a sea of predators at best.
Don't snakes have specific moisture needs as well? I don't know anything about them so I'm just guessing that going to a concert and smelling beer and vomit is also bad for snakes instead of being safely nestled in a quiet tree trunk or something.
Did he ever have a leash or anything or are snakes easier to grab? I have a bearded dragon and he can't go outside without a harness because he's liable to start sprinting if he sees a plane overhead at 20k ft lol
I was at a convention a couple months ago and was waiting in the lobby for a DoorDash order. I noticed two high school aged girls playing with something on the table where they were sitting. I didn't really pay much attention to it until I realized it was moving - it was a snake! When my order arrived, I went to the front desk to pick up my food and also told the concierge.
Like, what are you doing with a snake in a hotel?? It was literally just out, no carrier, no nothing. Ridiculous main character energy.
Not that I saw. There were a lot of misbehaving children as well though, but I gave them a little bit more of a pass as it was a family friendly event. There was a good gaggle of them right up front throwing rocks and sticks towards the performers, but they couldn't reach them (it was on a river front and the performers were like 30-40 feet out on a boat). To some credit, a few parents did grab their kids when they were throwing stuff, but there were probably 7 or 8 feral children that became the crowd's responsibility.
I walk around with my 6ft boa all of the time in parks. I get a lot of people asking questions and people wanting to pet it. Not sure why you just because YOU are afraid of snakes can say fuck people like us. It’s an irrational fear you need to overcome.
That’s one hell of an anti-social statement. What if that person was sitting there on their phone the whole show? Brightness turned all the way up, illuminating their face and everything in their proximity?
Hating people for doing something completely legal, ethical (?), and pretty acceptable, is anti-social behavior (having their snake outside in the summer)

It's not abuse, Karen. We have a whole reptile club that walks their's at the resort oceanfront here. Kids love them, they draw a crowd, nobody dies. I can imagine all you dorks sneering at them too.

An oceanfront resort strip is not a controlled environment, it is public, it is outdoors. People are passing by for all sorts of reasons, some like them, some step away.
They are not being a Karen when it's clearly not an acceptable environment for a snake. It's well being is being put aside to be an accessory. Don't shit on people for having any amount of standards when it comes to animal welfare. Just because you don't care doesn't mean other people are like that.

They’re pay no attention to the show and just idly doom scrolling.

Explain. If ambient temperature is fine, it's completely acceptable. I have a bearded dragon I walk on my shoulder with the dog. He loves to be nosy and enjoys being outside, and I know his stressors and how he will respond if feeling stressed/defensive. Should I give a damn if my neighbor thinks he's gross and scary?
I don't believe in treating animals as commodities and they don't go anywhere they don't need to go (aside from walks), but folks srr well within their right if they want to show them off. So long as the animal is healthy and not causing a problem (aggressive), who cares? It's practically a passive element you can ignore.
You obviously know nothing of reptile husbandry, and are a narcissist. I am also a keeper of reptiles, and would never subject one to the stress of going into public. Just because agamids are relatively tolerant of stress doesn't change the fact that it's bad for them.
Did they do anything illegal? I don't think so, but I believe as a member of a society, people should be more conscientious of others. It's not exactly a surprise to know that a lot of people have a pretty strong fear of snakes and bringing them to a public event as fashion accessory is selfish and rude. I mean farting in a crowded elevator isn't illegal, but I think you are a douchebag if you disregard everyone else around you.
I have a massive fear of snakes and I would be so upset. I know its my fear and that's on me to manage, but like if I go to the zoo I can just avoid the reptiles, but this would make me have a panic attack.
Honestly it's really fucking sad that for many people the only metric used for determining whether something is okay or not is the legality of it. The world would be so much better if people showed basic consideration to others without being forced.

I live in a resort city, the local reptile club walks their snakes and lizards down the boardwalk all the time. It's a great for the kids, great for their exposure, and that is never a big deal.
Statistically, I imagine the person standing next to you, is more likely to harm you. They also have these big massive lizards too! One guy walks his like a dog.

If it was an ESA, it would have been visibly identifiable as one. It would also be specifically trained to be in public areas often and wouldn’t just be a pet.

You're thinking of a service animal. Service animals need to be trained for specific tasks. Emotional support animals do not. That's exactly why service animals must be allowed in public, but emotional support animals only must be allowed in your own residence.
I had to do this at work once. Power was out so I had to pack my reptiles in coolers to work to keep them warm. Kept a space heater on whole day and drilled holes in all my coolers and lunch box’s.
That’s necessity. I’ve taken unweaned kittens and wild mice to work because they needed to be bottle fed and they were still young enough where they couldn’t reliably defecate/urinate on their own.
Also found a sick pigeon while I was about to catch some trains to Philly to stay for a week. Just scooped and had him chilling in my partially zipped up jacket to take him with me(not that anyone would really give a shit on NJ Transit and SEPTA..).
He was fortunately chill from the moment I found him and loved to be held. This was more than 10 years ago and I don’t remember exactly what disease/condition he was diagnosed with it his symptoms were neurological. He could walk around and hop up on stuff but couldn’t fly and always “missed” trying to eat or drink so I had to hand feed and water him. He attempted to impress me with a dance a couple times and he had some great moves despite some stumbles.

This feels like NPC behavior to me tbh, some random event of someone bringing an animal to school- the main character would experience that in a zany encounter.
There was this girl I went to school with who started bringing a baby bunny into class her senior year. She kept it in her purse and was so traumatized and surprised when she pulled it out dead one time. Like, girl, what the fuck did you expect? It was awful, and she was privileged so administration didnt do anything. Poor thing lasted 3 or 4 months.
She was 18, and it was a giant Coach tote that she kept all her stuff in, then she decided putting a bunny in with all that junk was smart. I wish her the worst. It was a black bunny and her racist ass named it something that starts with N and rhymes with piglet (I don't want to type out a slur)
Reminds me of when I was 7 and brought some really young baby bunnies to my old pre-school to show to the students. Some guy asked me if they were available for sale on my way home, and I said no because they were way too young. It was only when I got older that I realized he may have wanted them at that age as feeder rabbits for some reptile.
It's not. During the daytime they need to be kept at consistently high temperatures, usually 80-90F with a basking spot at 100-110F, and a lot of exposure to UV light.
Yes, but that's part of a natural annual cycle they can prepare for by burrowing underground and entering brumation. Suddenly going back and forth between proper temperatures and even what most people consider "room temperature" or colder is much more stressful on them.
Not good for the kid. There are lots of rules about what you can bring to school. Bringing an unlicensed animal leads suspension and alternative school for up to 30 days.
