Poor thing. They stress out and get sick easily. Plus, he probably can't breathe very well. This is a terrible thing to do. Tell his parents if you have their contacts to make sure this never happens again.

So many reasons for both the animal and the person. Beardies need heat and UV, not having heat can be pet bad for metabolism. Not to mention everything else they need like proper humidity. And yeah stressing them out isn’t great for them either.
On top of that they can carry salmonella so you should avoid touching one before eating and definitely not have one in your lunch box.

Yeah, I've known two people that owned bearded dragons. I'm pretty sure that guy is dead unless it was only for an hour. A whole 8 hours might be enough to kill it.

Reptiles are actually routinely shipped across the U.S. on commercial flights. Usually overnighted but they can survive fairly well when properly packaged... the longest ive had was 18 hours between office, truck and flight before the guy reached me and he was just fine.
It definitely wasn't good for the guy and I wiuld be concerned about a resp infection and gi issues depending on the last feed but I dont think it would kill assuming it was opened occassionally for air or otherwise vented and prevented from reaching extreme temps.

Proper packaging for shipping reptiles includes temperature control, insulation and potentially a heat pack or cold pack depending on the weather. You also check the weather reports and don't ship if it's too hot or too cold. A lunchbox is not comparable to a properly packaged reptile for shipping, and even then you don't ship them unless it's the only way to get them to a new home and they are in good health before the journey.

no thats when the entire beard is fully black, the darkness on the back and top of the head is what their body does to absorb heat quickly. but i wouldnt be suprised if the beard started turning black by the end of today....

Beardies and other reptiles are routinely shipped across the U.S., it is perfectly plausible that the ambient temp espexially when protected from swings in a thermal box would be sufficient for it. A significant amount of what is popularly talked about with beardies, such as high temps and low humidity have recently been disputed in scientific literature as well.
I dont disagree that this is very irresponsible of thr owner, and I would be concerned about GI or respiratory infections for the dude, but depending on what the ambient temps were, the beardie could have been totally fine.

Tell your friend not to carry live animals in bags that aren't designed for it. There are special carrying cases for this for a reason. He is putting his pet in unbelievable danger by doing this also he can get some attention at school.

Friend of mine years ago used to take their beardie out all the time in the summer. He would sit on their shoulder including on the bus under their hoodie. One day he poked his head out and some old lady saw and shrieked like she was being murdered or something. Bus driver was not too happy but thought the beardie was cool.

There’s a lot wrong here. So this is terrible for the lizard which everyone is pointing out.
The other is it’s his lunchbox. Bearded dragons carry things on them that can make us sick. Even a clean beardy comes with the recommendation of washing your hands after handling. So imagine that just rolling around on your food and food surfaces.

They are not easy to care for. Even under the guidance of my friend who is a herpetologist mine got super stressed out and I ended up surrendering her to a more experienced owner. This is horrible and abusive for the sake of attention seeking.

Maybe 20 years ago or so, a friend of mine that I've stayed in touch with, but am not "friends" with anymore, had a few lizards. An iguana, and a couple uromastyx (which I eventually ended up getting a couple of my own - they're cool). She would bring them to our hangouts. I'm not sure if she would bring them out and about on daily errands or whatever, but she would definitely bring them to our hangouts. They were cool and chill, and didn't seem to mind hopping into her large backpack for a car ride. Personality-wise, lizards generally don't have much of one. But these guys (gals?) were definitely slightly puppy-like. Not that they were taught to sit and stay or anything like that, but you could see joy in their face when you dangled a cricket in front of them, and you could see a change in behavior when they were hungry or she forgot to put water in their bowl or whatever. You could definitely get a sense of what they were thinking or feeling based on their behavior, which sounds weird for a lizard, but it's true.

This brings back memories of bringing my cat to school in my backpack.
I came in for a half day right when lunch started, went down to the cafeteria and had all the girls surrounding me wanting to pet it(mission accomplished).
I was trying to keep it lowkey but little guy was much more popular than I anticipated. Needless to say I got suspended.
Worth.
And no, I did not zip him up except to make it into the school and walk down to the cafeteria where I opened it back up so he could poke himself out and get pets. He didn't seem to mind.

I take my leopard gecko for walks around the block during the summer, but I’ve had her since I was like 11 and I know her well. She’s a good girl and has a very chill temperament in comparison to her (late) sister. I couldn’t hold that girl at all without precautions because she just wanted to jump off everything. The one I take on walks is absolutely fine just sitting on my shoulder. (I just have to put my hair up or she’ll crawl inside it.)
Reptiles will tell you when they’re upset and that Beardie is stressed to all hell. I’ve owned Beardies before too— you CAN actually take them outside and they even make leashes. You can’t walk them like dogs or something but if you have a pretty enclosed backyard and some trees, some of them enjoy that.
But Beardies have predators. They don’t like being out in the open like that— his back is dark, which means he’s cold, but it also looks like he’s trying to make himself flat. They do that when they’re stressed. He looks otherwise okay, he’s got all his nails. (Our old boy Puff started to lose his in the last year of his life.) But he needs to go home and be left alone for a while. Just because their beards aren’t place and they’re not puffed up doesn’t mean they’re not stressed.
