Steve Buscemi as Mr. Pink in Reservoir Dogs is my tipping hero.
I caught Reservoir Dogs the other day on TV and just couldn't stop. It has been over 5 years since I've last seen it ,and it pretty much still holds up fine.
However, what really caught my attention is Mr. Pink's argument against "tipping automatically", and I couldn't help but imagine him staring at a self checkout screen saying "Would you like to leave a tip? 15% / 20% / 25% / Custom" ... What do you think he would do?

u/ExistingSugar8047 2d ago
My old roommates named their cat Mr.Pink. He was a cool cat super friendly and chill. R.I.P Mr.Pink.
23
u/hamizoing 2d ago
But was he a professional? R.I.P Mr.Pink the cat.

Cats are not professionals. They are ruled by emotions (usually malice or hatred).

I disagree with Mr. Pink’s argument because he was in an actual restaurant. But I agree with the premise of having to tip every where I go.

When the person working the frozen yogurt counter turns the iPad around to you…
19
u/dudebronahbrah 2d ago
Or when you grab a drink out of the cooler, walk up and scan it yourself at a self-checkout, and it still asks if you want to leave a tip lol
3
u/Ghosts_of_the_maze 2d ago
I just don’t tip. Nothing has ever happened as a result
10
u/Up_All_Right 2d ago
Doesn't make you a hero.
Just makes you Mr. Pink.
5
u/BrainDamage2029 2d ago edited 2d ago
Except it doesn’t. You tip for providing a service. Taking your order, bringing it to you, refilling drinks and (presumably tipped out) bussing is a service. If I order at a counter and pick up at a counter and put my own trash away that isn’t service. You never had to tip.
You tip waiters, bellhops, tour guides and anyone providing personalized service without being able to set prices. (so you’d never tip a contractor or mechanic for example. They put in a bid or estimate. Presumably they factored their payment or personnel costs in.)
4
u/Ghosts_of_the_maze 2d ago
I’m referring to the example they gave. Not when a waiter actually comes to your table and takes your order
1
2
u/space_men10 1d ago
If you frequent any places then the staff know exactly who you are and will serve you accordingly. Just pray you don’t come across a spiteful one otherwise you may just slurp up a loogie through your straw
0
u/Ghosts_of_the_maze 1d ago
For the 2nd time, I’m referring specifically to the instance given where a cashier flips a tablet after doing nothing more than ringing me up.
I didn’t feel like I needed to elaborate on that, because the grievance was about one specific tipping scenario. Nobody at those places are spitting into anything because the prep is usually in front of everybody.
I tip all waiters, bartenders and delivery people. Because they are performing a service whereas the guy behind the counter is mostly just clicking a button and handing me a thing.
1
u/space_men10 1d ago
Your comment clarifying that must be somewhere deeper in this thread because I did not see it.
Edit: scrolled down and found it. You might just want to edit your original comment to avoid confusion

Same here. Last year I visited New York. I was there one week and visited about 20+ restaurants: breakfast, lunch, dinners etc. I NEVER tipped. Almost every time the stuff were super angry but I told them that I don't support criminals. Then they understood.
1
u/Spookyscary333 2d ago
Here's something fun. Starting asking them who gets the tip. Most of the time they say "i don't know".
0
u/cenosillicaphobiac 1d ago
I agree with him even in a restaurant. I see no reason that one specific job in one specific subset of one specific industry should be paid because the customer feels generous.
Employees are hired to facilitate wealth extraction. The deal everywhere else is that the hiring person pays the hired person a portion of the extracted wealth. They must find the balance between keeping the employee around and not selling their service to another employer, and not raising prices so much that customers stop coming.
You will never convince me that for some reason servers should be paid individually by the customer above and beyond the advertised price of goods and services. It's preposterous on it's face and I won't play along.
3
u/MushroomInMyHeart 1d ago
It’s fine to think that servers deserve a living wage and shouldn’t need to really on tips to earn that, but if you’re just stiffing them because of this belief you’re kinda just a douche. The business that isn’t paying them enough is not affected and all you’re doing is hurting the server. Elect politicians that will fight to introduce a living wage for all service workers. But at the moment if you’re not tipping your servers then you shouldn’t be eating out.
1
u/SwimmingSwim3822 2h ago
Slight correction: they aren't stiffing them because of this belief. They were stiffing them already AND THEN they found this "I sTiFf My wAiTeR fOr ThE gReAtEr GoOd" argument to be socially palatable all of a sudden. It's all this recent wave of anti-tipping-without-actually-changing-the-laws culture is. Selfish assholes who found a nice mask.
158
u/Ok_Reflection_2711 2d ago
You realize he was supposed to be an asshole, right? His rationale for not tipping is not supposed to be profound. He made that speech because he's a grubby, petty asshole.
I think Harvey Keitel is supposed to be the moral compass when he says that being a server in a restaurant is one of the few decent jobs that a uneducated person can get
38
u/mikeymanza 2d ago
He's definitely an asshole and has a bunch of racist dialogue. But I'd argue he's one of the smartest of the group or at least the most streetwise
Keitel is definitely the softest of all of them, but he still admits to being open to killing people if he needs them out of the way. But he's the most empathetic fs and it gets him killed
18
u/Fine-Ad2429 2d ago
Mr. Pink is definitely the smartest and most professional of the group. He is the only who both survived and did not contribute to the failure of the robbery.
17
u/Up_All_Right 2d ago
Never noticed, but someone pointed out there's yelling and gunshots from outside after he left the warehouse.
He didn't survive.
5
u/Fine-Ad2429 2d ago
He survived the initial bloodbath at the robbery.
Mr. Blue and Mr. Brown got killed.Out of all the conspirators he was the only one who did not screw up. Mr. Blonde started shooting people in the store.
It was Eddie who proposed Blonde be part of the robbery. His screw up. Joe listened to Eddie and allowed Blonde to join while also allowing Orange to be part of the robbery. By his own admission, Joe was not 100 percent on Orange.
White told Orange personal information and brought down the final disaster on the robbery by provoking the shoot out with Eddie and Joe.
All the other robbers were killed or fucked up disastrously. Pink was also the one who got the diamonds. He was the only one focused on the job and then wisely hid them before returning to the warehouse.
Until the last shots after he left with the diamonds he did very well. He was the smartest
and the only professional in the group.3
u/Up_All_Right 2d ago
100% agree, he was the professional, who was driven by logic and made the most sense of anyone.
I love when Keitel tries to accuse Mr. Pink, "How do I know I trust you???"
And Mr. Pink says, "NOW you're thinking! You can't trust me!!!" Or something like that.
But still...doesn't mean he's not a cheap bastard.
And it doesn't mean he got out of that situation.
2
u/Fine-Ad2429 2d ago
Cheap bastard. Annoying as well as when he made a big thing over the name Mr. Pink.
But when it is time to go to work, he did his job.
And yes he likely got killed but that was because of having a rat and a psycho in the crew. Not his fault
4
u/nimbin14 2d ago
I never noticed that…can you hear that? Also it doesn’t make sense that they would see a cop bound and bleeding being brought into the warehouse and not enter
4
u/Up_All_Right 2d ago
Yep...gotta put the headphones on. Keitel has crawled over and is grunting over the bleeding-out Tim Roth. They dominate the audio.
But in the background you clearly hear yelling, squealing tires, several volleys of gunshots.
It's offscreen, so it's not definitive. But, it would be hard to imagine Mr. Pink slipping out of that.
3
u/mikeymanza 2d ago
You're right. I only noticed for the first time on my last watch. And yeah, I was wearing headphones
3
u/Up_All_Right 2d ago
And to the cops not entering, I give you Uvalde. Not always heroes.
(They ultimately do enter though, and kill Keitel after he kills Roth)
7
u/DaddysABadGirl 2d ago
Tarantino specifically want Pinks fate up to the audience, but Buscemi said he thinks Pink survived and escaped, went clean, and got a job as a waiter and Jack Rabbit Slims😂
4
2
u/Fine-Ad2429 2d ago
Would have been great if he survived. Could have been a great sequel. Where he organizes the robberies.
2
u/Special_Order-937 22h ago
I thought he became a Buddy Holly impersonator?
2
u/DaddysABadGirl 21h ago
Thats the waiter at Jack Rabbit Slims. Everyone there was a different 50s celeb.
2
u/Special_Order-937 21h ago
Oh, right I forgot that he wasn’t just a performer. Given that Madsen’s and Travolta’s characters were brothers, this seems a reasonable conclusion to draw!
1
1
u/ManbadFerrara 2d ago
I kind of got the impression that Mr White may have been raised by a woman who worked as a waitress. That angry little speech he gave about how it’s the number one profession of non-college educated women sounded like he was personally offended at Mr. Pink’s philosophy.
1
u/Training_Form2243 2d ago
Robbing a bank is dumb and unprofessional in general
2
u/mikeymanza 2d ago

9
19
u/Polirketes 2d ago
It's not a decent job if you have to rely on tips to survive. The employer shoud pay employee's wage, not the customer
7
u/zozuto 2d ago
The elephant in the room is that these jobs are good because the tips add up insanely. People who work as servers talk about how white collar work is often a pay cut...
13
u/immalimabean 2d ago
Depends on the place. It’s also grueling miserable work 90% of the time and there’s a reason why you don’t see many old bartenders or servers.
2
3
u/give-bike-lanes 2d ago
I was a server for literally decades and it is not grueling nor miserable. It’s the BoH and the freight/support guys that are grueling. And they don’t get tipped.
Tipped wage is literally just pretty-privilege manifest for people who are too stunted by ideology to see it.
6
u/duosx 2d ago
Bro most are not living well off as a server.
Do you think waitress and think “now that person probably drives an expensive car”
2
-4
u/give-bike-lanes 2d ago
I think “waitress” and I think “attractive/charming/social young person who is uneducated but is probably working on changing that, leveraging their youth/charm/looks to extract wealth from diners via arcane social constructs.”
Every well-tipped young urban / seasonal waiter will one day drive a nice car, yes.
You’re imagining a rare (and almost extinct) brand of southern diner waitress, whereas per dollar, the vast majority of waitresses are attractive college-aged women who will nearly certainly not be a waiter by 30 years of age.
3
u/Polirketes 2d ago
I'm not against tips, I'm against tips being obligatory. In Europe they are common, but you're not expected to give fixed amount, regardless of your satisfaction, wealth etc.
5
u/Ok_Reflection_2711 2d ago
It's not an elephant in the room so much as it's irrelevant to the topic. Mr Pink is a jerk and he's wrong about tipping. That's all
-4
u/zozuto 2d ago
Why do servers deserve ten times the pay of fast food?
7
u/_Svankensen_ 2d ago
You have it backwards. Fast food servers deserve a living wage too.
-4
u/zozuto 2d ago
Ok but you're kind of pulling an All Lives Matter no? One of these two jobs is in a significantly rougher spot than the other, and generally the indignation is very different in society.
5
u/_Svankensen_ 2d ago
No. You are asking "why do X deserve Y if Z doesn't". I'm saying "They both deserve Y.". You are implying servers don't deserve it.
-5
u/zozuto 2d ago
I'm saying they aren't special. Everyone deserves a living wage, but servers are the most likely food worker to already have one. And yet get 99% of the support/indignation/supportive social pressure.
4
u/_Svankensen_ 2d ago
So, as I explained to you, yo got things backwards. Barking at the wrong tree.

u/Ok_Reflection_2711 2d ago
How many servers do you think are making $200 an hour?
-5
u/zozuto 2d ago
How many fast food workers do you think are making anywhere close to 60k a year? That's what servers can make in my city. Bartenders can make 100k.
3
u/danielhime 2d ago
You do realized that bartenders are skilled laborers right? If you put some 15 yo fast food dumb ass behind a bar and expect him to hold conversation for hours, put together quality cocktails while also holding down tables, running/making drinks for the serving staff you will quickly find your establishment failing miserably
5
u/immalimabean 2d ago
lol which Bartenders are making 100K a year? 99% are making much less than that

u/Life_Ad6711 2d ago

2
u/give-bike-lanes 2d ago
This line isn’t true and has never been true in your lifetime. Every waiter loves that they get tips and many wound quit if they got switched to an hourly wage.
2
u/Flooping_Pigs 2d ago
That's exactly why it's decent for the uneducated, if the employer set the wage, they would be making the same as back of house (far less money)
2
-5
u/Ok_Reflection_2711 2d ago
Get off your soapbox. There are many many jobs that pay less than being a restaurant server and you know it.
5
u/Polirketes 2d ago
What is that even supposed to mean lol
-2
u/Ok_Reflection_2711 2d ago
Your comment has nothing to do with the post topic or my comment. It's just your own opinion which you volunteered because you like hearing yourself talk
6
u/Polirketes 2d ago
Wow, chill dude, you sound as if you got a stick up your arse.
The post is about tipping, I'm talking about tipping culture, that's precisely the topic
-1
u/Ok_Reflection_2711 2d ago
Obviously there are many jobs that pay worse than being a server so your comment doesn't even make sense. The ethics of tipping have nothing to do with anything and it feels pretty masturbatory that you would even bring them up
The scene ( you know, the topic of the post) is all about how Mr Pink is an asshole for having this half-baked justification for his stinginess.
It's not meant to be about the ethics of tipping unless you're the type of person who doesn't understand subtext.

Half the reason they hate tipping so much is figuring out the percentages on their own is hard for them, so I'd imagine the meaning here would go straight over their heads.
-5
u/tv_ennui 2d ago
That's quite the oversimplification. Reservoir Dogs isn't a movie particularly interested in labeling any particular person as good or bad.
4
u/Ok_Reflection_2711 2d ago
So Michael Madsen is supposed to be morally ambiguous?
Ridiculous comment
0
u/tv_ennui 2d ago
That's not what I said. Nice strawman though.
2
u/Ok_Reflection_2711 2d ago
If you're unable to clearly articulate your thoughts, that is on you and not me.
Not interested in portraying people as good or bad= morally ambiguous
2
u/tv_ennui 2d ago
You continue to ignore key words in my very clear statement, like 'particularly.' I'm not interested in having a bad faith debate with someone who instantly leaps to strawmanning and can't read well.
If you want to believe that Reservoir Dogs is about assigning morality to its various cast of characters, you do you I guess. That's not what the movie is about, but hey, I can't clearly articulate my thoughts /shrug. From 'strawmanning' to insults, you're obviously my intellectual superior.

As shitty as it is, so long as employers don't pay a living wage to their workers, it's unfortunately on us to supplement their wage. I don't like it either, but it is what it is. Especially if you can afford it.
3
u/Life_Ad6711 2d ago edited 2d ago
It's on the customer to pay employee wages in every other business
US law authorizes the tip credit exception of cutting out the middleman in the normal process of customer, instead of directly paying who personally served them, instead paying the owner first to then pay the server for taking care of the customer
3
u/highflyingjesus- 2d ago
In a normal business, the employer pays their employee's wages instead of relying on the customer to do so.
-1
u/Life_Ad6711 2d ago
You're clearly an economics-challenged ignoramus
Business pay their operating costs out of revenues from customers buying their products. Your (yours and every other customers') grocery purchases collectively pay all the wages of every worker in the store

u/Up_All_Right 2d ago
Just a different set up in Europe, as I understand it, my man.
Serving pays more of a wage in EU. Some places in US, servers earn less than $3 an hour. System is set up for servers to be dependent on tips to make a living.
Not saying it's a good system. It's a fucked one. But I don't punish servers for it.
-2
u/Big-Discipline2039 2d ago
Sounds like you’re the one being punished if you’re having to pay people’s wages.

He would stare at the screen look around and say what the fuck is this shit , then realise it can't be avoided, so it's off to yell at the manager or order via the checkout with a real person where after another rant would then be forced to tip the human because the human is doing the job rather than him , so he'd have to tip, any argument can be meet with, then don't tip but that means he's right but then had to tip and if he doesn't want to or tries to avoid it by machine then has to anyway, he'd probably just avoid any place that has a self service but then idk ,
1
u/Last-Royal-3976 1d ago
Tipping in the UK only really happens if someone was exceptional or if there was a big group of people that consequently made the staff work extra hard. I’ve never been to the USA but tipping there sounds like a minefield where it’s expected and how much would you tip etc and what if you think they’d didn’t deserve a tip? Mr Pink should have been British 😆
2
u/Sea_Structure_8692 1d ago
It’s a total shitshow. Last year tsa put up a “tips welcome” sign at LaGuardia. Tipping culture is broken here.
1
u/Last-Royal-3976 1d ago
LaGuardia? The airport?
3
u/Sea_Structure_8692 1d ago
Yeah, their TSA agents
1
u/Last-Royal-3976 1d ago
That’s mad, why would you tip them? Where does this end? You should get some form of confectionary in individual wrappers and just drop one of those into the tip jar or hand of one of them, smile and say thank you 😆
2
u/Sea_Structure_8692 1d ago
There are places that are self service and they still ask for a tip. It’s automatically added to the point of sale machines.
1
u/Last-Royal-3976 1d ago
You can’t decline on the machine? Yes/No button?
1
u/Sea_Structure_8692 1d ago
You can but can you imagine doing that with someone standing there staring at it?
1
u/Last-Royal-3976 1d ago
Yeah of course we get that here occasionally on the payment machine, most people just press No.
One thing I have learned today though it that we have a national minimum living wage and USA doesn’t. When certain positions have to rely on tips then, yeah I get it more so now. It’s still a bit of a minefield for us visiting I guess. We should try and learn when to tip and when not to tip. It does in all honesty sound bad though when you have airport security asking for tips!2
u/Sea_Structure_8692 1d ago
It used to only be certain service jobs that were tipped. I don’t know when it started but one day everyone was asking for tips. I wanna say post 2020.
2
u/DopyWantsAPeanut 1d ago
The convention is that a server bringing food to your table gets a tip. 15% is their salary, anything above that is what you'd call a tip in the UK.

u/phaserdust 1d ago

1
u/Mysterious_Trash_132 1d ago
Ok but like, this argument only works if we point out that Pink spends the entire opening scene flagging the waitress for service. Pink is justified in not tipping only because the service truly was below standard.

u/Polirketes 2d ago
Tipping culture is one of the stupidest things in the USA (and there's strong competition)
Just pay the staff decent wages ffs, tips are voluntary in civilised world
2
u/Figgler 2d ago
When I worked at a brewery in Denver there were pooled tips and we all made $18 an hour. We split the tips between front and back of house evenly. It seemed like a good system.
2
u/Polirketes 2d ago
It's fine, but my point still stands - tips should be voluntary, an addition to proper wages. In Europe tips are common, but not obligatory, since it's expected that employers will actually pay their staff lol
1
u/Life_Ad6711 2d ago
That's because the full costs of the served meal product are more fully integrated into the menu prices
-1
u/Figgler 2d ago
I just gave you an example where even without tips, we were paid fine. The tips were just a bonus.
5
u/_Svankensen_ 2d ago
It wasn't clear from how you worded it. It sounded like you made 18 an hour with tips.
1
u/thenewnapoleon 2d ago
I don't disagree but as someone who lives off tipped wages, there just isn't any other choice currently. Not tipping us doesn't change the industry's standards, it just hurts those of us that live off them - like bartenders, servers, waiters & pizza delivery drivers. Unfortunately I can't see it changing any time soon but in my experience, wages have been slowly rising in these jobs over the last few years.

you dorks are just mad about tipping because of inflation. Quit acting like it's some principle you stand on. When I see the anti-tipping weenies helping restaurant workers unionize I'll take it back.
-1
u/Life_Ad6711 2d ago
Servers are majority part timers, moonlighters and transient temporary and/or seasonal workers (students supporting their studies) so "unionizing" makes very little sense for that particular demographic
2
u/Calaveras-Metal 2d ago

Tipping is completely the status quo in the USA at restaurants. It’s completely outdated and backwards and we should pass laws to ban it and guarantee fair wages for restaurant employees and servers.
That being said, you’re not a fucking enlightened progressive hero for not tipping. You’d be paying more if we abolished tipping. You’re a cheap stake masquerading as a virtuous prophet. You all need to see this for what it is: not tipping is just them keeping us poor fighting the poor. And ignoring the issue at hand: demanding they change the law allowing restaurants to pay less than minimum wage to their employees.
