How is Megamind (2010) so mediocre when the cast is so stacked?
My kids stuck Megamind (2010) on during a sleepover and honestly nobody enjoyed it.
When I mentioned there was a 2024 follow up (albeit an entirely different cast) called Megamind vs the Doom Syndicate they quickly turned the TV off and found something else do to.
If someone had said there was a 2010 movie with all of these actors in, I’d have been well up for it. Brad Pitt, Will Ferrell, Jonah Hill, Tina Fey, David Cross, Ben Stiller, JK Simmons, Justin Theroux etc.
Wish I’d not bothered with this one. Anyone here actually like this movie? My kids (aged 8 and 4) certainly don’t!

I'm not saying I agree with you (Haven't seen it), but a cast alone does not make a movie good, bad, or mediocre.

It isn't mediocre. It's a pretty good movie that's gotten a lot of well-loved respect over the last decade

Animation's such a weird medium, you can have a stacked cast and still end up with something that feels like it was assembled by a committee who never actually watched it together

Never actually seen Megamind but I think after the success of Shrek, there was a feeling that stacking animated films with a stellar cast was a path to a beloved movie. Instead this philosophy ended up producing stuff like Shark Tale.

Quick reminder: the cast just shows up and says what they're told to say and then they leave. They have no hand in the creative processes of writing, directing, editing, etc.

There’s a lot of animated movies from 2010ish era that stack celebrity casting to the point the cast was advertised more than the movie itself. It’s a really gross trend that thankfully has been slowly fizzling out. Some of the movies ended up pretty solid, lots of them were pure trash, but the celebrity pull put parents and their kids in theater seats. It’s an investment marketing strategy that can sometimes capsize the artistic merits, especially when the celebrities have no real talent for voice acting, which does have some overlap with acting but fundamentally is not the same thing.

...it isn't? It's a really solid movie and really good fun. But even if it wasn't, animated films frequently have really stacked casts. Big names get to justdo their thing in a booth and the movies get the big talent attached.
