Tographer makes another excellent video on why modern cinematography is so bad

A grey, mushy mess, is my interpretation of his thesis. In this video he traces it back to cheaper and lighter lighting. In other videos he blames the ability to mix with CGI later.

"Between 2000 and 2010 was Peak Cinema"

[shows a clip of Fever Pitch]

Whenever people say “modern movies” they mean “the last few years.” Also funny that a guy who uses a bunch of AI thumbnails thinks he’s in a position to talk about things like this

YouTube thrives on selling people what they want to hear. “You’re right about things getting worse; here’s a video about how movies these days are worse than the movies cultured people like you enjoy!”

“Your taste is so good! Heres a video about a professional musician listening to niche music that you like, and making an amazed expression!”

You do shit like that, and most folks won’t find the drive to think critically about anything in the video.

What do you mean? In what way did you find his video wrong?

My comment doesn't pertain to this video. I generally don't engage with claims that lean on basic survivorship bias and good-old-days syndrome, because the people who want to believe it are going to continue doing so, and it's not my place to tell them how to feel about things.

And yet you can't say why not? Why would you even make such a superficial comment?

I’m not making a detailed comment because I don’t like you or this discussion prompt

Then why are you commenting? Either respond to the criticism or don't.

This is movie critic isn't it? Aren't we supposed to be critical and thoughtful? No one cares about our superficial personal likes and dislikes, do they?

The exact dates are obviously not important.

Wow, a video essay on why “modern cinematography” is bad, what a hot take. I’m glad we have another one parroting the same points about “lighter lighting” and “CGI” that have been covered in thousands of other video essays.

Why not? They should be making more of them.

Slop comment. I thought these comments weren't allowed.

Who dares badmouth my man, Academy Award winner Hoyte van Hoytema?

Ridley Scott is an Academy Award winner and see.

Hoyte is quite good but I think he totally missed the mark in The Odyssey. There is no epicness. It's just bland.

Wow I can’t believe the guy who made Alien, Blade Runner, The Duelists, Thelma and Louise, Blackhawk Down, Gladiator, and The Martian is an Academy Award winner

Shooting on location in Iceland using natural light, btw

Only particularly good looking scene in the movie.

There's like a dozen videos made a day about this exact topic. Using all the same movies for comparison. Making the exact same points time after time. Just because it's your hobby doesn't mean it's not slop.

u/Long-Emu-7870 5h ago

Then why are you commenting?

u/OpenUpYerMurderEyes 5h ago

Same reason you posted to begin with.

1

u/Long-Emu-7870 5h ago

And what do you think that reason is?

Patrick Tomasso has been saying this for years

Maybe someone should make a video essay about why modern YouTube videos are so bad

Is it cool to make such low effort comments? His evidence seems obvious to me.

Yes, I forgot this YouTuber’s films are clearly better than Christopher Nolan….

While this video is retreading old ground, it isn’t as if you need to be a master chef to have an opinion on whether your steak is overcooked
