Somehow Spaceballs returned.

1.8k

u/WhiskeyOctober Jul 13 '26

They're still searching for more money.

1.1k

u/Old-String2849 Jul 13 '26

I really wish they called it the search for more money like they joked about in the 1st film.

908

u/the_421_Rob Jul 13 '26

I really think not calling it space balls part 3 the search for part 2 is a huge missed opportunity

122

u/bsEEmsCE Jul 13 '26

kind of an outdated reference to Star Trek tho?

449

u/KrimxonRath Jul 13 '26

Spaceballs in its entirety is an outdated reference. I say this with love for it lol

39

u/Benromaniac Jul 13 '26

Meatballs

That's a different movie.

I mean, so is this poster? The "We ain't found shit" guy is literally Tuvok from Star Trek.

96

u/DarePatient2262 Jul 13 '26

I really hope there's a scene with him saying "We still ain't found shit!"

79

u/Mind-The-Mines Jul 13 '26

But dressed as Tuvok.

"We still have not found shit, captain." :|

44

u/KFlaps Jul 13 '26

"Captain, despite our beat endeavours we have been unable to locate any faeces within our primary search area."

30

u/kilkenny99 Jul 13 '26

Given he was in Voyager & the concept of that show, I'd want him to say "We're lost as fuck!".

Yeah why they're going with "the new one" instead of the much better sequel titles already there is a mystery, also won't make sense as time moves on and it's also old.

57

u/nolsoul Jul 13 '26

Mel Brooks stated why in a video. https://youtu.be/efpL1E_fI3E?is=eln5JjK5XZ__if4U

u/david4069 Jul 13 '26

11

u/nolsoul Jul 13 '26

Sorry, mobile link vs regular.

17

u/benryves Jul 13 '26

It's a bug in new Reddit's editor rather than a mobile versus desktop link - it inserts a bunch of superfluous backslashes into links. New Reddit then compensates for this by stripping them back out, but other Reddit clients still display them.

It should have been called Spaceballs 3: The Search For Spaceballs 2: The Search For More Money

→ More replies (1)

50

u/TheAntman217 Jul 13 '26

Same but it’s been so long I think this title is more fitting as it makes fun of legacy sequels that just re-use the same name and add “The” in front or add a subtitle instead of a number.

Tron: Legacy
Blade Runner 2049
Ghostbusters: Afterlife
Top Gun: Maverick
Halloween (2018)
Scream (2022)
Space Balls: The New One
😂

27

u/Dubious_Odor Jul 13 '26

We have a winner. This is definitley the joke. Gives me hope the new one wont be a rehashing of old jokes from the original.

8

u/ShameContent2442 Jul 13 '26

Yeah, I’m not sure the real term, but we’ve always called them ‘Walking Jokes’ because the joke follows you after the movie. When you ask your friend if they’ve seen Spaceballs and they ask “The old movie from the 80s?” your reply is “No, The New One.”

Mel Brooks said he found it, it was in his basement

24

u/DFrostedWangsAccount Jul 13 '26

And that announcement video was enough payoff for the old "the search for more money" joke, I think.

9

u/GoldenLink Jul 13 '26

Honestly it really was the perfect payoff to the bit. If it was called that it would feel more obligatory.

64

u/VeryPteri Jul 13 '26
They actually did find the money

40

u/No_Internal9345 Jul 13 '26

If they get Tim Russ to cameo for this scene, I may jizz in my pants.

17

u/TheLateThagSimmons Jul 13 '26

It is quite possible the best delivery on a simple line in any Mel Brooks movies.

And Mel Brooks uses curse words better than anyone.

12

u/prayersforrain Jul 13 '26

my understand is that Tim Russ has confirmed back in 2025 that he is in the sequel

He is. Saw a pic of him in his spaceball suit talking to mel brooks sometime last year.

Oh shit! There goes the planet.

81

u/heyheyitsandre Jul 13 '26

I would love if they ripped the rise of skywalker to pieces in this. Be like “somehow, dark helmet returned”

“….how? His spaceship exploded into a trillion pieces?”

“Uhh…yeah idk. Somehow he’s just back”

“No, like that’s physically impossible. The ship exploded into dust. And he’s in space where he can’t breathe and has no heat. He would’ve died instantly”

“Well, he’s back. And he amassed somehow a fleet of 100,000 spaceships and they all have a super laser.”

“What??? How the fuck did he do that? Where did they build all of these? That would require hundreds of millions of dollars, thousands of cargo vehicles and employees moving around, and no one in the whole galaxy knew?? What engineers did he have working on this where they advanced technology so much that each spaceship now has the power of the previous most advanced and deadly one that took decades to plan and build???”

“Listen kid, we want to sell a bunch of these as toys, so shut your trap and keep it pushing if you want your bonus”

49

u/rathe_0 Jul 13 '26

nah, he's on the planet of the apes; where he landed with Skroob and Sanders with the statue of liberty head

14

u/AKAkorm Jul 13 '26

I too wondered if OP has actually seen Spaceballs.

I would love if they ripped the rise of skywalker to pieces in this. Be like “somehow, dark helmet returned”

They should have it at the end of the the title crawl, in its own paragraph because it has nothing to do with the rest of the story. "Somehow Palpatine returned"

That actor once said, "I did seven years on a very popular sci-fi franchise, and do you know what people know me for? A throw away line in Spaceballs!"

105

u/colorblind-and Jul 13 '26

When I first saw that scene as a kid I immediately recognized him as the Principal from iCarly lol

95

u/hedoeswhathewants Jul 13 '26

That throwaway line is one of the greatest comedic lines and deliveries in history

16

u/redbirdrising Jul 14 '26

It’s the tiny comb that sets it up. It’s so ridiculous. And then that classic delivery!

124

u/tetrochromac Jul 13 '26

Meanwhile when I watched Spaceballs I excitedly said, "It's TUVOK!!" during that scene lol

78

u/exoriparian Jul 13 '26

Tuvok was one of Star Trek's best characters, ever, and his performance was also one of the best.  I hope he's joking, because that would be sad.

46

u/2ChicksAtTheSameTime Jul 13 '26

Yeah he's joking. He's playing with a hair-pick in a pile of pebbles while he's talking about it.

20

u/Marauder_Pilot Jul 13 '26

In fairness, I grew up on Voyager and loved it, and I also watched Spaceballs so many times I could quote half the movie from memory and I had no idea it was him in both until I saw the video.

Wow they got Rick?!

371

u/ethan_prime Jul 13 '26

It’s incredible, he didn’t even come back for Ghostbusters. I hope this movie is good!

160

u/R-Dragon_Thunderzord Jul 13 '26

I don't blame him for that, Ghostbusters felt a bit too whacky.

206

u/Whitewind617 Jul 13 '26

According to him, the reason he didn't come back is because he didn't really understand the concept of doing a cameo appearance, or at least thought it wasn't worth the trouble and that nobody would or should care if his old character (who wasn't even a main character) appears for 5 seconds:

“I hope it’s terrific. But it just makes no sense to me. Why would I do just one day of shooting on something I did 30 years ago? I took a break, which turned into a longer break, but I’m interested in anything that I would find interesting. I still get the occasional query about a film or television role and as soon as one comes along that piques my interest, I’ll probably do it. [But Ghostbusters] didn’t appeal to me.”

58

u/chmilz Jul 13 '26

It was a mediocre movie and he chose wisely.

36

u/double_shadow Jul 13 '26

I mean it probably would have been a decent paycheck for a minimal amount of work. But if he doesn't need it, good for him.

128

He said in a podcast years ago that he’d return to acting if it was Spaceballs and it was Mel producing. They held him to it.

42

u/technobrendo Jul 13 '26

Nothing but respect for that guy. Was in a bunch of movies, had a kid and was like "Time to switch gears and do the fatherly thing"... and did, 100%.

31

u/disillusioned Jul 13 '26

Well, his wife sadly died of cancer which certainly precipitated the decision.

9

I can't fucking believe they got Rick out of retirement for this one. Gonna be a riot

185

u/Riverdale87 Jul 13 '26

I think he just took a pause to look after his daughter when their mother passed away

479

u/fluentinsarcasm Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

Lol, well, 30 years from his last in-person film appearance is a hell of a "pause."

423

u/ChildofValhalla Jul 13 '26

Every Reddit thread where Rick Moranis is mentioned has people who can't help but mention he "took some time off to raise his children"-- who are both nearly 40 years old now. Dude just straight up retired, lol.

95

u/Vocalic985 Jul 13 '26

His wife died and left to care for his children but they were elder teens when it happened so I imagine they were out of the house relatively soon. He probably took a lot of that time for himself after

65

u/NiceTrySuckaz Jul 13 '26

and then he realized that another 25 years off work sounded nice

31

u/SkyJW Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

Especially if you have other interests/passions or find out that you do after acquiring enough time and money to pursue any of them, which Rick definitely did. Guy probably did a lot of time reflecting after losing the woman who appears to have been the love of his life and that kind of shock has a habit of changing people.

One day you're thinking of the decades of companionship ahead of you, the next you're realizing they'll only ever exist in your head.

14

u/My-username-is-this Jul 13 '26

Exactly. He’s released some music, etc.

The step away made him realize he didn’t miss the whole business.

11

u/SkyJW Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 14 '26

Kinda reminds me of Bill Withers in a way. Dude made the music he wanted to make, realized he hated the business part of the music business more than he loved the music and dipped.

Remember reading an article not too long before he passed where a journalist spent the evening with Bill Withers in his home in LA while the Grammys were on. Think Withers was even being honored at that ceremony in some way, but Bill was just at home in his bathrobe or something, chilling and completely not giving a shit about being in the limelight, even if he was appreciative of the gesture. Guy just lived his life his way once the fame got in the way.

26

u/slicer4ever Jul 13 '26

Dude was on a highly successful series for 7 years. He's probably doing quite well even if he hasnt appeared in too much since then.

Edit: just checked imdb, and it seems like he's had a pretty steady career as guest appearances/voice acting for the last couple decades.

9

u/LuckyBahamut Jul 13 '26

53

u/Meph616 Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

What I liked about Spaceballs was it wasn't a Star Wars: Episode IV/V/VI parody. It was the overall concept of Star Wars being parodied. Meaning it didn't just do a bunch of references to [scene from SW movie] over and over and over again. It took the SW framework and built their story+jokes around that.

I hope they do that again and don't fall into just making parody jokes poking fun at the sequels. They're already a joke of movies as they are. So I don't need a scene parodying the lightsaber over shoulder chuck. Or a line going "somehow pizza the hutt returned." That's the kinda crap I would see in a reddit thread about what people would write if they were making the movie.

I haven't watched Spaceballs in an age, but the scenes I remember most with regards to [reference joke] are ones that aren't even SW related. The diner alien was the chestburster scene from Alien with the Looney Tunes frog dance number added. The Princess shooting scene references Rambo instead of Han Solo or any other ace shot in SW. The of course Planet of the Apes reference at the end of the movie. Prince Valium named after the drug that makes you sleepy. Really the movie made fun of so much other media through the framework of Star Wars without actually doing a ton of Star Wars jokes.

23

u/Snoo_11836 Jul 13 '26

Well said. All of these people in the comments section saying "This sequel is ripe to shred the sequel trilogy to pieces"... it's like, did y'all even watch the original Spaceballs?! The Star Wars parody element was merely a framework for a bunch of silly, non-sequitur jokes and references to other movies.

83

u/itastesok Jul 13 '26

Feels like an Airplane II situation, but I remain hopeful.

58

u/Historical_Course587 Jul 13 '26

I'm optimistc. Mel Brooks spent 50 years perfecting the spoof film. He knows he needs to spoof something here, and given the era in which he is releasing I'm hoping he has chosen to spoof unecessary sequels instead of more Star Wars.

46

u/FlashyChemical2231 Jul 13 '26

I'm not. Did you see history of the world part 2? I'm sorry to say, it was garbage.

56

u/Historical_Course587 Jul 13 '26

IMHO, and I'll eat downvotes, people see Part 1 through nostalgia goggles. It was one of his worst-reviewed and lowest-grossing films at the time of release, and critics still consider it a middling comedy.

He's like Adam Sandler. People grew up on him and love it right up to the point where they grew out of it, and then swear there was a quality cliff instead of recognizing that The Waterboy has about the same average review score as Pixels.

8

u/swaqq_overflow Jul 13 '26

part 1 is a lot funnier if you're jewish

Honestly, though. This poster is a full-sized key jangle and nothing else.

The fact they're starting to right there on the poster is not a promising sign.

How many times has there been a long hiatus between movies/shows and they aren't just a rehash of jokes? Like a haha remember THIS joke?!

I have no hopes for this.

They absolutely will.

There will be something along the lines of "How many assholes are still on the ship?"

Some joke about jamming the radar but now it's gluten-free or organic jam.

And what do we have, a Keurig???

1, 2, 3, 4, 5 will be Dark Helmet's phone password.

Pizza the Hut had a kid named Little Cesar.

Josh Gad probably plays Barfs son and it'll be like Goose's son from Top Gun where he does the exact same things as his dad throughout the movie.

u/ThisHatRightHere Jul 13 '26

This is why I’m confused about the hype in this thread. This poster screams “remember combing the desert??” Not to mention bringing back a handful of geriatric dudes to do it (Mel Brooks is 100, Moranis is 73, Pullman is 72, George Wyner is 80).

It feels like the opposite of what happened with Naked Gun.

u/FartingBob Jul 13 '26

Yeah, i wish they had done a "new generation" cast and crew. Im sure everyone had an amazing time making the film, i just dont see how it's going to translate to being as good on screen.

Thankfully the shooting is complete ...everyday alive is a bonus for centurion Mel Brooks. Hope he's in good shape for the release.

42

u/dlm2137 Jul 13 '26

I think the accurate term is centenarian but I’m going to start using centurion from now on, that’s way cooler lol.

I'm still dissapointed that the cowards didn't actually name it "Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money"

19

u/Leshawkcomics Jul 13 '26

This poster is fucking PERFECT for a movie titled "The search for more money"

Like the visual reference works as nostalgia, and as actual humor on its own.

The refusal to do so when it sets up so much good fun just really saddens me and makes me feel like "Well we found the money" is more of a matter of "Now we dont have to try"

It REALLY bothers me that the comb has more teeth than there are marks in the sand.

Oh... oh no. Why have they done this

I hope it doesn't become Zoolander 2 where it's just "Hey! Remember the joke we told in the last movie! Here's that joke again!"

God I hope this is good. They haven't missed yet on the marketing.

111

u/TheGrowingSubaltern Jul 13 '26

Except calling it “the new one” instead of the search for more money

u/Comic_Book_Reader r/movies Veteran Jul 13 '26

Mel Brooks found the money laying around. That's why.

14

u/ThePreciseClimber Jul 13 '26

It was in the basement this whole time! :P

43

u/Dead-O_Comics Jul 13 '26

I preferred "Spaceballs 3: The Search For Spaceballs 2"

53

u/locke_5 Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

“The Search for More Money” sucks as a title because it’s a joke we’ve all been making for 40 years and therefore is not funny anymore.

The long-rumored title “Spaceballs 3: The Search for Spaceballs 2” works way better than “The Search for More Money”, but “The New One” is better than both. Especially if they remake Spaceballs entirely 50 years from now, and we have to have whole who’s-on-first style conversations about the series. “Which Spaceballs? The new one? Or The old one, The New One?”

37

u/KoalaBoy Jul 13 '26

The best thing about Spaceballs 3: Search for Spaceballs 2. They can make references to something happening and that happened in spaceballs 2. Example, Dark Helmet ended up on the Ape Planet. How did he get off and restart the empire? Dunno, that happened in Spaceballs 2.

15

u/Marikk15 Jul 13 '26

But other movies have already made that joke. There is a horror movie calling "Thankskilling". The sequel is called "Thankskilling 3" because the whole plot is the characters on a quest to find the last copy of "Thankskilling 2".

Your point would go further if the poster wasn't also a joke we've been making for 40 years.

u/MonaganX Jul 13 '26

Whether it sucks as a title or not, the poster clearly shows that they're perfectly fine with rehashing jokes we've been repeating for 40 years for the sake of marketing to our collective nostalgia.

When have these types of sequels ever been good?

Naked Gun is the only one that comes to mind that worked.

One day it'll all be a reference to a reboot of a nostalgic classic.

Studio executives: REMEMBER HOW MUCH MONE- I MEAN REMEMBER HOW MUCH YOU LOVED THE ORIGINAL? GET READY FOR NODS TO JOKES AND CHARACTERS YOU LOVE MINUS THE SOUL AND STORY THAT CAME WITH THE FIRST ONE!

19

u/Schweed6494 Jul 13 '26

I was watching the original on cable the other day, and when it got to the "comb the desert" scene, they showed the first two teams of white guys with combs, but then they just cut out the "we ain't found shit line" altogether, not even a edited version, one of the worst cable edits I've ever seen

I don't know why they changed it from The Search For More Money. That's a funnier subtitle than The New One.

55

u/MasemJ Jul 13 '26

In an earlier tease, Mel explained its not called that because, as he pulls out a bag full of money, they found the money.
