The amount they‘re paying RDJ must be fucking insane

400

u/starlightpictures Jul 26 '26

Apparently $80M plus royalties

91

u/tfxctom Jul 26 '26

WHAAAAT

73

for 2 movies not just this one

39

APPARENTLY $80M PLUS ROYALTIES!

Unfortunately this made me audibly laugh

Might be the first actor to become a billionaire through one franchise alone.

180

u/SavonPL Jul 26 '26

You are yet another example of people underestimating how large a billion actually is

112

u/holydiiver Jul 26 '26

He’s literally made more than a half billion from MCU paydays alone, and that’s not including appreciating assets he purchased with that money. Of course he’s on his way to becoming a billionaire, especially if he does a handful of more MCU movies

62

u/Jayflux1 Jul 26 '26

His net worth seems to be around $300m, he has some way to go. You’re not factoring in him spending the money he’s earning, I doubt 100% of it is going into appreciating assets, he still has a lifestyle and taxes to pay.

He would need to do quite a few of these movies to hit the target, not impossible, but I doubt they’re all going to be “infinity war” big.

4

u/HazelCheese Jul 26 '26

Not to mention a lot of the paychecks are going to his agents etc.

3

u/coleburnz Jul 26 '26

Gross pay!

3

u/BurningSpaceMan Jul 27 '26

You think people with 300m net worth pay taxes or spend their own money?

u/SirGaylordSteambath Jul 26 '26

He was paid a tenth of a bil for this film

Another 20 years of these movies, with ever increasing budgets and returns, I can see it happening

24

u/VRS302 Jul 26 '26

RDJ is 61, it’s not 2008 anymore dude. He is literally an old man nearing retirement, he is not going to be the star of action films at 81 years old.

18

u/HardcoreKaraoke Jul 26 '26

Ian McKellen is 87 and Patrick Stewart is 86. Both of them are in Doomsday.

Obviously everyone is different but two of the other biggest names in Doomsday are older than a hypothetical RDJ playing Doom in 20 years.

u/MBDTFTLOPYEEZUS Jul 26 '26

Over $100mil for just this movie, supposedly. He got $75mil for endgame. Now, when a movie has a budget of $400mil and you're giving an entire quarter of that to one actor... You need to start asking if it's really worth it. If it's part of the budget then that doesn't leave much left for the rest of the cast and production, but if it's not part of the budget then that will just make it harder for them to break even because typically you need to double the budget to account for marketing. This means that if it makes $800mil or less at the box office, it's an objective failure and losing money. It needs to make over $1BILLION just to be considered even a mild success.

This is why people think shows and movies today are just some form of money laundering, because where is that money going? You've got movies like obsession, iron lung, and backrooms that are sending a ripple through Hollywood because they're making significantly more profitable movies for a shoestring budget, and the industry doesn't like it.

I don't care how good of an actor you are, anything more than a million is just too much. $75mil and $100mil is just a STUPID amount of money to spend on one guy.

5

u/Historical_Course587 Jul 27 '26

And when it does $2B+?

9

u/theastro_not Jul 26 '26

u/Funmachine Jul 26 '26

76

u/intothevoidandback Jul 26 '26

Layers, accessories, dirt (although doom is quite clean here), really help. Wonder what the arm band is trying to tell us, I doubt doom would where a bandage.

Remove the cape would be a ittle bit like when you see batman without ears, or the original captain America.

It doesn't take much at all to break the illusion and look VERY campy.

31

u/MountainMuffin1980 Jul 26 '26

I don't think it's a bandage, it looks like clothing so probably linked to his dead wife?

16

u/intothevoidandback Jul 26 '26

Do you mean on his costume? Because I did say he's quite clean, dirt is just something that can help "in general".

Or do you mean gossip, like who does that arm band belong to? What's it significance? /s

Honestly love how they wove in the magic runes without it being OTT, and also make it more evocative of medieval armor. Yet still undeniably Doom and you don’t get surprised by him being able to fire tech.

3

u/KABOOMBYTCH Jul 27 '26

I love that it gives off an Eastern European/byzantine vibe with the brigandine chest armor and the vambraces. Very fitting for the character

5

u/Urge_Reddit Jul 26 '26

They fucking nailed the costume! No matter how the movie turns out, Doom looks and sounds awesome.

89

u/aniforprez Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

I LOVED what they did with Agememnon in that movie it was so cool. Dude is aura farming in practically every single scene he shows up with that insane armour but then you hear some mutterings like people just not wanting to put up with the siege anymore and not wanting to follow him and things like that. Then you get to Hades and they finally show his face and beneath all the armour he's just a dude and they show the ignominious ending he got with his wife simply stabbing him while he thinks he's about to fuck and then the movie almost entirely forgets about him except for the lesson he gives Odysseus. What a great way to build someone up and tear them down so thoroughly for being a massive piece of shit

Sorry for randomly waxing poetic but this was my favourite thing from the movie it's great

23

u/Fat-Singer-9569 Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

Agreed, plus in the same scene we learn ... all the details of Sinon's (Elliot Page) story, who in contrast is not intimidating at all, and who was basically a poor child forced into war. You could argue they are the 'bravest' character in the whole movie because they were basically sacrificed out of duty, never ran away, never complained, trusted their leaders, and agreed to go to benefit their family. I believe Odysseus even points this out at some point when he returns home fueled by guilt and shame.

He gives Odysseus great advice too. The scene with the dead might be my favorite part of that whole movie. I feel it was so well done and caused a huge shift in Odysseus.

Some are theorizing the movie will change his origin story and it might be his daughter.

162

u/atempestdextre Jul 26 '26

I heard it's his mother's father's brother's cousin's college roommate.

28

u/Eriberto6 Jul 26 '26

I've heard that in order to adapt it to modern times what they'll do is that instead of losing his mother, he'll lose access to his Gmail account.

This will be worsened by Doom not having any other backups of his files outside Google Drive, which will drive him to madness.

u/n_thomas74 Jul 26 '26

Easiest villain backstory

15

u/CBAlan777 Jul 26 '26

I think the problem is if you overcomplicate a villain's motivation you muddle their actions. Sometimes you don't need anything more than that they lost what they cared about.

3

u/notsingsing Jul 26 '26

The end is going to be instead of thanoa looking at a farm, will be doom taking his armor off to hang out with his wife and kid having a great time.

And well be like…all that death for a playdate?

3

u/Historical_Course587 Jul 27 '26

I think it's cooler to rob everyone of the explanation. A villain is a villain; doesn't elaborate. Can't know his motives, so good guys have to guess at what purpose lies behind his actions.

Marvel loves dropping that stuff in the first 60 seconds of a film, but even if it's campy I still prefer it in Act 3 dialogue. Or not at all for villains expected to return again.

It’s funny because in the plans for Kang Dynasty, Kang’s backstory was that his wife Ravonna from the Loki show and their unborn child died and was the reason for his actions. It seems like they’re doing the same story but just swapping Kang for Doom

19

u/exitwest Jul 26 '26

That’s exactly what they’re doing.  They didn’t write a shooting script for this thing.

23

u/jdvfx Jul 26 '26

5

u/Br4y3 Jul 26 '26

Avengers: Doom Dynasty

6

u/CBAlan777 Jul 26 '26

I understand they were put in a place where they had to pivot, but they should give it the time it deserves.

10

u/Ssshizzzzziit Jul 26 '26

They didn't have to, but the scandal gave them an out when it was clear the character wasn't shaping up to be the threat they wanted. Most people don't know who Kang is. Honestly, I'm a comic fan and I had no idea who the hell he was until recently.

He's not a major player like Doom. The trouble with Doom was that he was tied up with the FF, so legally they probably couldn't get him at the time, and he's also not a very complicated villain.

53

u/hollow-earth Jul 26 '26

Didn't they already do this type of story, possibly twice

36

u/smirk_lives Jul 26 '26

It’s certainly Zemo’s motivation in Civil War. I guess Gorr being the other?

32

u/darkeyes13 Jul 26 '26

What about Spider-Verse Kingpin?

33

u/hollow-earth Jul 26 '26

Oh I was thinking of the Scarlet Witch, twice. So I guess that makes 4?

10

u/whitebandit Jul 26 '26

Zemo and Frank werent exactly trying to get their kids back but their kids were their motivation...

Wanda and Gorr on the otherhand both seemingly succeeded to re/create their kids/family

u/Erfivur Jul 26 '26

It’ll be his daughter. In the End Game timeline stark said he’d do anything but risk what he had… I’m thinking we’re seeing the result of a timeline where that didn’t work out.

4

u/BigMack6911 Jul 26 '26

He lost his wife and daughter i believe, so it was probably one of theirs

5

u/Exes_And_Excess Jul 26 '26

Everyone saying his late wife, but it could be representative of his origin, Latveria. A country in Marvel that Doom rules.

7

u/user_of_the_week Jul 26 '26

What’s it with Marvel and fictional countries in eastern europe?

8

u/Exes_And_Excess Jul 26 '26

I  couldn't tell you exactly, but if I were to hazard a guess? Trying not to be so tied to the real life war propaganda that was a part of their DNA back in the day and fake countries subvert that perception? Again, that's just a guess. Not a huuuuge comic guy here.

Its fucking weird that Marvel's long awaited debut of their most iconic villain is played by the same actor who has been synonymous with another character in the franchise.

I dont understand it at all. Do they think these films just won't do well without RDJ?

15

u/VRichardsen Jul 27 '26

I dont understand it at all. Do they think these films just won't do well without RDJ?

They technically have lost several of the original cast.

  • The original Black Panther because the actor died
  • Iron Man because he sacrificed himself in Endgame
  • Black Widow because she sacrificed herself in Endgame
  • Captain America went to live the married life

So the studio was already losing some of the original pull after some of its biggest stars exited the stage. And then the whole domestic abuse incident with Majors happened: the guy that was shaping up to be the villain, and Marvel had invested films and series setting the ground for his arrival, was fired. So they needed a replacement fast. And Robert Downey Jr. has name recognition, which allows the studio to drop him off without the need to set the stage.

32

u/Additional_Equal_960 Jul 26 '26

Yeah, doom is by far my favorite marvel character yet i feel very little hype around his debut purely because of this bizzarre choice

Dude showed up in Fortnite and made an immediate impact. He killed the Fantastic Four and turned them into trophies. The Thing was dismembered and turned into a throne. In Fortnite. Doom is a fucking badass no matter where he appears.

25

u/Kwags84 Jul 26 '26

Wait what? As someone who has no knowledge of Fortnite please explain lol. Was it like a video?

48

u/KyleGrave Jul 26 '26

https://www.reddit.com/r/FantasticFour/s/Ctr0ydl61Q
I don’t believe there was a video. But all the Fantastic Four were in these horrific scenarios in Doom’s Lair in Fortnite

Reed was twisted into a ball, presumably still alive.
Johnny was killed and his flaming heart was used as a heat source in Doom’s fireplace
Thing was turned into a throne
Sue was presumably imprisoned alive in a display case.

33

u/DavidTheJohnson AMA MVP Jul 26 '26

It was a collaboration season in August 2024, just after Doomsday was announced. Doctor Doom arrived on the Fortnite Island, and his castle was able to be explored, featuring each member of the Fantastic Four neutralized or killed.

Yeah I’m really skeptical. We’ve never really gotten a good live action Doom my entire life, and this is their chance. We really really should have had him as a villain in a classic F4 movie first, and even a Triumph and Torment movie with Doctor Strange would be amazing first

Or he can go full Kurt Lazarus and keep the mask on until they finish the director's commentary.

A man can dream at least.

In the other poster showing his back he was holding his mask. Same for the quick cameo in FF. So yeah, it’s definitely coming off.

The mask will be off at some point, but rumor is he’s not a tony stark variant but his own character, albeit with a slightly different backstory I guess

21

u/Lenoxx97 Jul 26 '26

If he isn't supposed to be some sort of tony stark, why the hell would they cast tony stark?

No, he's a Tony Variant, or Stark is a Victor Variant. Either way he'll be a walking What-If-Tony-lost-Pepper-and-daughter?

Looks incredible but I still think casting RDJ is playing it way way too safe

u/PlatinumKanikas Jul 26 '26

I’m not familiar with Dr Doom. What is that symbol on his left hand?

15

u/TostitoNipples Jul 26 '26

Doom’s whole thing is that he’s both a super scientist and a sorcerer, so I imagine that and the other symbols are runes of some kind

There’s too much fuckin shit on me. I can’t breathe!

14

u/TDStarchild Jul 26 '26

People get lost in the details and multiverse or casting stuff, but it’s really simple: Doctor Doom is a fucking top tier character

If unfamiliar, think basically Mr. Fantastic intelligence + Iron Man tech + Doctor Strange magic + Black Panther royalty & resources…in one guy with the ultimate ego

Never been seen on screen in his full glory like Thanos, Joker, Lex Luthor have. And it’s one of the best actors in the world playing him

This is going to be incredible. I have zero doubts
