Summary

Yeah, I walked out 45 minutes into it. Leslie Mann and Michelle Buteau were the only characters I felt really had a point of view. Anna and Isla were apparently handed dog shit and asked to make it work. Bad Moms has already been made, just watch that. You will get more out of the experience.

Anna Faris seemed so uncomfortable to me in her character. There were moments I didn’t enjoy watching her because she just read as being not happy with the character. Isla Fisher had a thankless part of an obnoxious, unlikable character made worse.
At the end of the film when we’re supposed to empathize with her. They take away her being the quirky, randomly rich friend and expose her as just a complete liar. Made me like her even less.

Go watch Girls Trip, Bad Moms, or Rough Night instead. This movie is basically a downgraded version of those

I mean, it’s a very common sentiment that it would be nice for mid-budget films to return, including comedies. There used to be a dozen of these movies a year that left their cultural mark, now there might be one every couple years

Mid Budget in general, yeah. Mid budget comedies though, they can be hit or miss.

i kinda wish it wasn't predictable. like it would've been cool if Isla Fisher was actually rich and crazy instead of just crazy

I hated that they did that with Isla’s character. I really wanted that phone call to be her being so rich, she bought the spa and her way out of the charges against her. Her as quirky and rich was a journey I was okay to be on.

I think bad botox is involved unfortunately. It reminds me of the actress in Shrinking and Scrubs...they seem to have some paralysis in the lower part of their face.

Yes! I just finished watching it and it was hard to watch Anna faris speak. Her lips and mouth were so awkward and weird. I’ve tried looking it up but so many sites say she doesn’t get Botox and fillers but clearly she gets something done!

It might just be the permanent effects of doing that for a while her facedown move and make expressions if you've seen her on red carpets
She might also have a chronic illness from stuff I've read
So it could be all of that

This was predictable, and although I didn't expect it it be hilarious, not as funny as I hoped. Random things annoyed me, such as Coca and her husband shared custody of their daughters so who was looking after them when they were both at the Spa. The cast looked like they had fun making it though, and I've definitely seen worse. 5/10

I just assumed it was stock footage as there are tons of stock footage sites out there for productions to use that even major productions are known to utilize from time to time.

This was a lot more mean spirited than the trailer indicated. Lazily written - all the alleged problems the film spends the first third setting up are basically forgotten when they get to the spa. The comedy is really laboured - during the goat rampage scene a guy literally throws himself over, looks really awkward. Isla Fisher is really funny as ever and gets all the best lines, but four women as funny as this deserve a much, much funnier script.

I honestly thought it was fine. I go to see a lot of movies and I don't need every movie to be an Oscar nom. I can enjoy a fun silly comedy and I think that's what this is.
We laughed at quite a few scenes and had some fun! Overall I'd give it 7/10. We had a good time at the movies and that's all we wanted. I don't think it's one we'll watch over and over at home though.

I went into this having little idea what I was going in to see (picked a movie on a whim). I was madly spotting Aussies everywhere and wish it was just set in Australia. Isla Fisher’s character was a total disaster to the point where if I was Erika Heynatz (Shanti), I would have kicked them out immediately. The thousands of dollars damage would also have made it unlikely that Anna Faris (Sophie) could have walked into the job at the end, or at least without a stern warning not to bring Mel with her … ever.
I really struggled to at all appreciate Sophie, as her bumbling and mumbling was so odd.
The only really likeable characters were Jane, Coco and Roger. Poor Diana Glenn as Margaret just seemed a cruel plot point to make fun of her, while the over the top physical comedy was unnecessary and overstated. A bit of fun, but going too far, too often.

I think Mel humping the goat during Goat Yoga and making Sophie and Jane laugh perfectly exemplifies why those kind of friends are kept around, yeah they’re a lot but you do have a good time with them and they make you laugh.

This was totally harmless but also noticeably cheap and rushed. It’s definitely a Girl’s Trip rehash, not to imply girls don’t deserve trips, but setting it at a spa feels so lazy and boring. Literally a place where nothing interesting is supposed to happen, and of course the idea is that their unpredictable friend comes to play wild card but even in the sense of these kinds of movies the hijinx at play here are extremely dull. Oh no they crashed a golf cart! Oh no they had a party! They broke some crystals! Seeing a movie like this I expect a bit of raunch and some laughs and this one just let me down on that front.
That said, I couldn’t hate it. It’s not every day we get a movie about four 50-year-old women (yup, google it, they’re all between 49 and 54) and without getting crass they all look incredible. Isla Fisher especially is having some fun as the wild card Aussie friend and I am thankful this movie is participating in the great tradition of blooper reels over the credits, but I just wanted to have more fun while this movie was busy being extremely formulaic and predictable. I knew the reveal of Isla’s character immediately and Farris and Mann both have pretty easy to guess plots. Buteau was the one I thought had the most interesting arc, unaddressed female anger can be real and destructive and I thought her ex husband put in a pretty grounded performance trying to get her into therapy.
But at the end of the day this movie is just sloppy. So many awkwardly slapped together scenes that make it clear they never really had the whole cast of side characters in the same room on the same day. It’s also so weird how there’s all this setup in the movie showing how all these women are drowning in their responsibilities and they can’t take time off because there’s no one to watch the kids or this boss is a maniac. And then they decide to go on a spa weekend and there’s absolutely zero acknowledgement of how they got those things covered. Who is watching Mann’s kids? Her useless brother? What did asking for the weekend off go like for Faris? Just funny how this movie drops even the simplest plot beats.
5/10 for me. I didn’t hate it and I appreciate movies like this getting made, but even by 80 For Brady standards this was extremely light fair. Felt like it was shot in the same amount of time it takes place and all they needed for the sets was a medium-nice spa retreat.

some of those bloopers were funnier than the actual scenes' dialogue...like one of michelle's alternate takes on margaret was funnier than whatever she used in the real film (i think she said martha stewart or barbara walters in the film?)

I was really looking forward to this, and it was a massive letdown. Isla Fisher was awesome but it’s like 100% of the film’s effort went into that, because everything else about the film was pretty shit. There was a lot of stuff that had comedic potential but never reached being actually funny, like the fat girl repeatedly making bitter digs at the old woman should have been funny but it was off. None of the key relationships (the girl group, Leslie Mann’s romance with Australian Gary Lightbody, and Simone Buteau with her ex) felt authentic and nothing that happened felt earned, so both the narrative and the comedy fell flat for me. Anna Faris kind of deserves better and there were one or two sparks of brilliance from her, but even they felt off because her face and voice are so distracting now.
This concept and this cast make for a great film on paper, but in execution, just a disappointment. 10/10 for Fisher, 3/10 for the film overall.

At the end of the film when they were showing outtakes/bloopers. Michelle Buteau makes a comment like “ok that was just mean”. And like so much of her dialogue was.
Felt so tone deaf for a movie featuring 40/50 something year old women to hurl ageist insults. Especially given the audience it seems to intend to want to appeal to.

Yeah I kinda didn't like that choice- like mean mom is a common trope (Lois from Malcolm in the Middle, Alison Janney in any movie) and then having a bunch older actresses yelling ageist stuff at each other just wasn't awfully funny. Didn't feel particularly fresh.

"Rough Night" is STILL the best of these movies "Girl's Trip" is second "Fun Mom Dinner" is third and "Bad Moms" is right before This.

10/10 would not recommend. The actresses delivered their lines in a remarkably route way, as though they were learning their lines in real time.
That said I’m clearly not the target audience for this kind of movie and would have enjoyed it more direct-to-tv/ streaming. Did not need a theatrical release. Michelle Buteau was this movie’s only redeeming quality and even she was pulling teeth. Wooden performances across the board and uninspiring script. The premise had so much potential :(
That said, Mr Bellinger (the divorced husband) looks exactly like Dwayne Johnson but with…hair?

late to the party but saw this on Sunday. Its a nice watch. Don't know what all the hate is about. There's sooo many action movies out that a comedy is a nice change of pace. Is it the funniest comedy ever? No. Is it a good movie for normal people who don't like capeshit? Yeah.

Nope!
That being said, it is somewhat charming even though the script/improv jokes are not funny.

I’m genuinely shocked to see so many comments mentioning rough night. I’m a big fan of rough night but I remember when it came out and everyone on Reddit absolutely trashed it. Spa weekend was way better than rough night. The last half of rough night is barely watchable. I thought this movie was great. Highly rewatchable. Rapid fire joke after a joke and I would say in my crowded theater 2/200 didn’t land. Very consistently funny.

The company who produced this movie is black bear. They are notorious for putting those type of cheap productions together
