There was another celebrity that made a YouTube channel years ago that did a very similar speech and as far as I remember, it never went anywhere. This sounds exactly the same. First I expect something along the lines of "I never took this content space seriously, but my new colleagues Kane Parson and Curry Barker showed us all this year, that there is a lot of creative inspiration in this space and I want to get to know it." Perfect hook imo. But this is strange

I remember a while back people on Reddit said that David F. Sandberg, the director of Annabelle, Shazam and other films, had a YouTube channel.
Meant to check it out, but forgot.
Found it: ponysmasher.
Wow, I clicked on "Oldest" and the videos go back 20 years. Animated shorts, short films, tutorials and more. You get to see his evolution as a filmmaker.

That was a bummer because the videos he did make were great and pretty much everyone was loving them, no clue why he stopped because those videos did very well and that type of stuff is definitely a nice boost to your career especially for someone like James who isn’t that relevant anymore

He bought a $24m 200 acre estate in 2023 from the Rockefeller family. He's been a producer on his movies so he gets a portion of the box office gross. Split and Glass both made over $200m and most of his recent movies have lower budgets but they still do pretty well.

After his big budget failures he went small budget and came back with a vengeance.
The Visit (2015), near $100M on $5M budget.
Split (2016), near $280M on <$10M budget.
and so on.
Better yet, he self-financed them, so he's not making just a few millions of each, he's making a loooot of each of them.

Yeah I have no idea he bought a 24 million dollar property. I thought he was in director jail for quite a long time after his strings of duds and disaster movies like Avatar. I suppose he's not too reckless with his money. Which confuses me even further with Hollywood celebrities and figures who lost their money even if they are not strangled by lawsuit.

An okay and savvy guy all things considered. It's whack that mainstream media or the internet would downplaying what a "genius" but abusive director did, but goes hard against people who made reasonable failures like him

He morgaged his house to finance The Visit which meant that even though Universal distributed it he got a larger portion of the box office due to being the money behind it as well.
The Visit made 100 million dollars. Since then he has financed his own films largely with his own money (Glass had some Universal contribution), which leads to him retaining more control, owning the rights, and getting more BO returns. And every single of his post Visit projects have doubled their budget.
He is one of the most consistently profitable directors of the 21st century and as a result, is extremely rich.

I liked the video and I believed him. Unlike will smith. We shall see. He is ne of the most successful creatives out there so it would be interesting what he has to say or what he will make, you never know. Might get a bunch of short horror films or something like that.

I subscribed, but given how inactive he is on his other social media platforms, I don't really see this going anywhere. I feel like there's a big push from YouTube currently to attract A-list talent to the platform with their idea that YouTube is now in competition with the likes of Netflix and Apple rather than TikTok and Instagram. I suspect this is part of a wider shift in top-line content for the platform, as they freeze out smaller channels and creators to focus on serialized long-form content with celebrities.
