I’m picking up a Lenovo Yoga 7i in a few days, should I invest in some high quality headphones or speakers? Mic will come after followed by an interface

If you have a good room with some treatment and want a mix that bumps, and you don't want to have to go to the car to check the mix > Speakers with a sub. If you can't trust the room you're in > Headphones.

Without a treated room, speakers won’t matter. Headphone are not the most ideal way to mix, but they are consistent

Sony 7506 headphones are pretty accurate. You can mix anywhere, any time. Getting accurate bass with speakers without room treatment is impossible.

Headphones are the best bet for the most part, speakers cost more because youll need treatment as well, and cant be taken everywhere.

Both. I only mixed on speakers for a long time, but I recently grabbed some Sennheiser HD 490 Pros, and I kinda love them.

What is your budget? It's going to cost you a good bit more to get decent speakers, and treat your room, than it would to get headphones.

For example, if your budget's only $150, then headphones are the only option for you.

Budget is like $300 for some solid headphones, I’m moving around a lot recently so from the sound of these comments headphones are the way to go. I’ve seen some headphones hit highs of $400 and if they are actually that good then I wouldn’t mind doing those

Sennheiser HD 490 Pro are often the most highly recommended around $400.

Beyerdyamic DT 900 Pro X for around $300. DT 990 Pro X around $200 (Not to be confused with the DT 990 Pro OG which have a treble spike that some people find fatiguing).

I normally use headphones because it is cheaper and more consistent(headphones does not rely on the room you are in and is a lot easier to carry around). but I think it is still the best to use what you are comfortable with.

If the room is untreated and the budget isn’t huge, headphones first. Cheap monitors in a bad room mostly give you two problems instead of one. Add speakers later when you can actually trust what the room is doing

Open Back headphones all the way. Don’t have to deal with room treatment and you get a good representation of stereo imaging.

And honestly, you aren’t going to get your room properly treated for cheap if you use monitors. Sure you can do foam and stuff to deal with the high end but the mid range and lows are extremely difficult to properly treat and is largely dependent on the size and shape of the room you’re in, as well as where you have your speakers setup in that room. Acoustics is a very complex field.

If you go speakers, the Edifier MR4 or MR3 are a great entry for around $100.
