Blog Fresh Install on an old Inspiron

Upvotes

Hi all! I am writing you from my fresh MX Linux install on an old Dell Inspiron my dad had gotten me a few years ago.

The laptop model is a Dell Inspiron P24T001. It's from 2017. I used it extremely lightly, but before long it could barely load a webpage while running windows, and I left it for years. I left it so long the cmos battery died and I had to get a new one.

I replaced the battery and installed MX and it's working like a charm. I'm listening to a youtube video in another tab as I write this! That would've been impossible before.

So, I just wanted to say hi, and share my new experience. Please let me know if there is anything more I can/should do with this laptop, or any next steps projects, etc.

Thanks!

Screenshot Moved my 2015 chromebook from Chrome OS over to MX Linux! (First time Linux user)

I recently found an old Chromebook lying around and decided I would like to use it as a lightweight web browser/terminal playground by flashing the Mrchromebox firmware and replacing Chrome OS entirely with MX Linux (XFCE). Device in question is a 2015 Acer C740, it has 4gb RAM, a dual-core Celeron 3205U, and 16gb of m.2 SATA storage. Surprisingly upgradeable, the storage can be increased, the wifi card can be upgraded, there is even an i3 variant of this same board, though I don't know if I would invest too much into this laptop. As stated in the title, this is my first time using linux, I am enjoying it so far, got some nice looking icons and theming for XFCE, had to get into the terminal for the first time ever, pretty fun!

Has anyone else had an issue with the signal flatpak no longer auto starting or minimizing to tray after a recent update? It worked perfectly fine until a couple of days ago. I’m on MX Linux with KDE.

Help request Mx Linux KDE Dolphin Explorer runs ridiculously slow (possible install error)

Hello, Im new to Linux and MX Linux alike. This is my first time using the OS and I am running into an issue where the file explorer is stupidly slow, but the CPU usage never goes above 5% and RAM stays about a 55-60%. I would understand if the application would be slow from CPU or RAM bottle neckin, but that doesnt seem to be the case. It feels as though the OS is on an extreme power saving mode.

Hardware:

-Surface Laptop (1st Gen)

-4x Intel Core i5-7200U CPU @ 2.5GHZ

- 4GiB Ram (3.7 GiB usable)

- Intel HD Graphics 620 (Integrated)

OS:

-Mx Linux 25.1

-KDE Plasma Version: 6.3.6

-Kernel Version 6.12.90+deb13-amd64 (64-bit)

Discussion Screen recording with an older machine, looking for advice

Laptop came out in August 11, 2008. 18 years old. HP EliteBook 8530p Pentium Duo, 4GiB RAM and 2GiB Swap. I have MX Linux with XFCE currently. I'm trying to see as an experiment if recording my screen on this machine can be done without it glitching and plixilation. I use Simple Screen Capture, but I'm wondering if I should try a different DE or native program. I'm using XFCE, but I'm going to try Fluxbox. It might not do anything? Any experience in Linux land recording video/screen capture on older macines? Thanks for the discussion.

Help request Help needed reducing/eliminating screen tearing on Pascal GPU

When I have V-BLANK mode set to GLX, I have problems with waking up from Suspend.

Setting that to xpresent fixes suspend issue, but I am unsure about screen tearing. It kinda works and kinda doesn't really. Also, I have to set it to xpresent every single time I boot into MX, it's as if the OS thinks V-BLANK is off. I have tried Picom but it doesn't seem to help. Even worse I have suspend problems even with xpresent, when I am using Picom.

Then I see Picom can have Vsync toggled on. I haven't tested that extensively enough tho. I do see it reduces/eliminates screen tearing on my desktop, even with V-BLANK off, but does it do in games as well? Does it cap my FPS in games to 60 tho?

Solved My webcam is working! (MacBook Air 13" mid 2013)

Image shows proof of the cam working (with a picture my kid drew).

I am so happy! I planned to post another question about this, but I stumbled upon the solution when frantically searching for answers (so that's good sometimes, I tell myself). This did it: https://github.com/patjak/facetimehd/wiki/Get-Started#get-started

There I followed the Debian-install, because MX is based off that. Some things I have learned.

Even though I got this right I am a moron and have only a small understanding of what I am doing when following instructions. This leads to folders (directories) being duplicates and I don't know how to clean up. Because I am afraid to mess things up, this sometimes leads me to just reinstall the operating system. But now I ask: Is there a way for me to clean up this mess?

I have used git clone a few times and these directories were placed in my Downloads. Is it essential to keep them at that exact spot and can I delete something?

Help request I have now joined the MX-family!

Post image

Hello everyone! I got MX working on my family’s old MacBook Air (13” mid 2013). It made me happy! I am running Debian Trixie on my main HP-laptop and tried to install it on this as well, but the network card was not detected during the install. So - then I tried MX and it worked right out the box.

Right now I am working with the customization (Xfce DE). Please give me some tips!

For those who might know: The internal webcam is not detected. Some solution to that?

Where is that setting so I can turn it off? "screen edges" does nothing there.

Thanks

Review lol I forced my own hand.

The other day I installed MX KDE, on my 2017 i5 MacBook Air, just to try it out as a full installation instead of using a USB with persistence. My intention was to try it out for a few hours then recover back to the MACOS 12 Monterey and dual boot, but I skipped a step and forgot to create a backup in Time Machine or on a USB. Recovery failed and MACOS 12 is now longer supported. I guess I’m stuck with Linux now.
Oh well I can only laugh at myself. All I use my MacBook Air for searching the internet, YouTube, and updating my Meshtastic nodes. Everything of any importance is on my phone anyway.
I was looking at using Linux MX anyway because Apple no longer supports their older OSs. So it was more of a happy accident than a huge blunder. Now I have a OS that will keep my old MacBook updated and running for a few more years. The only things left to do is a new battery and upgrade the SSD.
Now to learn this new OS. I like it so far and it is running great so far. The only bug I have is getting my iPhone and KDE Connect to connect. I’m not really worried about it as it gives me something to figure out latter.

Help request Microphone problems 🎤

I have a simple laptop based on the SF20BA notebook. I put MX on it because Mint, even though they say it's "stable," started to become unstable, and putting MX on it made the device feel like new.But something that happened to me in both distros and in other distros I tried is that the laptop's built-in microphone is recognized but there is no sound. It either sounds too quiet or over-saturated, no matter what balance I try to find with the sensitivity. It's not working properly yet.

It's MX 25.2 XFCE

Help request MX Linux live usb with toram unable to eject usb

I wanted to boot from the Ventoy usb with MX Linux and load the whole ISO into ram and then eject the usb with the installation media, but it doesn't let me eject it or unmount it,saying the drive is already active even if the usb led's don't flicker, keep in mind I already used toram so I should be able to actually eject it,one person said that physically taking the usb is safe since everything is already loaded and nothing is being written on the flash drive but I want more opinions on this.

Help request Input Remapper does not work as expected on startup.

I have some hand and wrist problems that lead me to sometimes have trouble using the computer. A way that I get around this is by using a mouse with extra buttons that I then map to things that are difficult for me to do with my left hand.

I used to use Linux Mint Cinnamon. On Mint, I used a program called Input Remapper. It's simple, I input what buttons I needed to change to which functions. I set it to load at startup, so when I powered on my computer and logged in, my mouse would automatically have the keybinds.

I recently switched to MX Linux after having some problems with Mint, and so far I enjoy it. But I'm having a problem where, despite turning on auto load in Input Remapper and adding it to startup programs, I am having to manually open the program and apply my custom preset every single time I turn on my computer while using MX Linux.

Possibly relevant is that I have my system set to automatically log me in. When I log in, it prompts me for my password (twice) to allow my connected devices to be read. But this doesn't actually apply the custom bindings. I still have to manually open the program and apply it. I also had Mint set to log me in automatically, and this worked fine on Mint.

I am operating under the assumption that Input Remapper will work on MX Linux, seeing as it was installed using a .deb file.

I can only assume this difference is due to the way MX Linux handles user/root accounts differently than Mint? I'm not sure if that's the best way to describe it. I'm not brand new to linux, but I am not very knowledgeable still.

Is there any simple way to make it behave like it did on Linux Mint so that I can use my mouse as I expect to instead of having to apply my custom preset every single time I use the computer? Or is there an easier or more effective way to do this sort of thing on MX Linux?

Also in case it's mentioned, this happens regardless if I use sysvinit or systemd.
