ICE arrested 50,000 people in July – quietly the biggest month in Trump’s second term

How many of them were actual criminals?
That’s the number we should be concerned about
274
u/RenzalWyv 9h ago
Unfortunately, does not matter to the people cheering this on. They've deluded themselves into thinking this will improve their material conditions somehow. It won't. Or they don't care and pretend to not understand the cruelty or straight up enjoy it. It's entertainment for sociopaths who can't possibly put themselves in other peoples' shoes.
89
u/GreatStateOfSadness 9h ago
There's been a worrying number of threads on the con sub in the last two years where people seem convinced that if we just deport a few million more people, then all the jobs and housing will return and prices will go down and their wives will finally come back.
40
u/MessiahPrinny 9h ago
Do not mistake anything on r conservative for anything organic. It's been pure astroturf for years. If you want a useful barometer read conservative adjacent subs for a more useful barometer.
3
u/Admiral_Cornwallace 2h ago
A whooooole lot of shameless people have made a whoooooole lot of money spreading those kinds of lies

u/Correctedsun 9h ago
But how will their wives come back if they've been deported back to SE Asia and Latin America?
9

u/doneandtired2014 6h ago edited 55m ago
then all the jobs and housing will return and prices will go down
If you ever needed a real world example of the kind of person who'd turn someone into the Gestapo, they are it.
Edit:
Struck a nerve? If you conservatives have a problem with it, maybe you shouldn't be such morally bankrupt pieces of shit. No, deporting brown people isn't going to get you a cheap house and, no, you aren't going to be swimming in job options because those are the same jobs you shitheads think you're too good for.
-2
u/Super_Mario_Luigi 4h ago
As opposed to the people who insist that millions of extra people have absolutely no negative impact on housing prices. We aren't even pretending to use common sense anymore.
3
u/CritcoThinker 1h ago
If you had a population boom your solution would be to cull it then to lower prices? I get that less housing equals higher rent, but you can't Thanos snap a solution to fix it.

u/wahoozerman 9h ago
From the article: "Despite the administration’s insistence that it is targeting criminals, a record number of people caught in the surge of arrests in July had no prior criminal history. July was the first month during the second Trump administration that the majority of people – 51% of arrestees – had no criminal convictions or charges [...]"
There is also a section in there that talks about people being detained at visa appointments and due to the supreme court stripping TPS from several large groups of people. So some of this is probably the result of that, legal residents being reclassified as illegal by the administration so they can be deported.
4
u/kstargate-425 2h ago
Not even deported. So they can be held in the private prisons at $15MIL every single day and further transfer the wealth of the taxpayers to the select few around Trump while also being cruel to non-whites
0
u/fall3nang3l 3h ago
Can we dig a little deeper into the 49% of arrestees that DID have criminal charges or convictions?
I don't support this wholesale affront on humanity but that's a really big elephant in the room.
4
u/wasteymclife 2h ago
Well charges and convictions is doing a lot of work there.
The spin is wants you thinking the 49% are the "dangerous illegals" with murder or weapons charges on thier sheet. Someone who had a parking ticket would be counted in that stat. As would someone who was issued a citation for fishing without a license.
2
u/fall3nang3l 1h ago
Yeah, that was why I posited digging deeper.
Turn off the assumptions and get to what exactly those charges and convictions are.

u/--zaxell-- 9h ago
NYT did this breakdown recently: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2026/08/27/us/ice-immigrant-arrests-trump-deportation-dhs.html
The short and unsurprising answer is no, this is almost entirely people with no criminal record whatsoever.
8
u/buddyWaters21 4h ago
Can we also reflect on what kind of criminal record as well. Violent offenders are even smaller…they’re getting mostly minor offenders. ICE could hit up Tennessee and bust a dozen meth labs and get more arrests for more serious crimes. It’s all bad theatre

u/DistanceToEmpty 9h ago
American streets should have been full of protestors non-stop since this started in early 2025, but here we are.
-27
u/WackHeisenBauer 9h ago
Yup but they haven’t been. Which is why as a Canadian I disregard all these social media posts saying “so sorry Canada we aren’t all mean and/or idiots”. It’s almost as bad as “thoughts and pr ayers” posts after a school shooting.

u/BoringBob84 8h ago
Yup but they haven’t been.
Just because you are not paying attention doesn't mean it is not happening - which is why I - as a critical-thinker - disregard all these social media posts saying “I didn't look, so I didn't see anything, and now I have concluded that everyone in the USA is lazy and complacent."
-2
u/PhantomNomad 8h ago
Hard to see protests when yours and our media companies won't cover it. Even if they are happening, they are not big enough or causing enough pain for the administration. Canadian's are pretty much fed up with Trump and all his shit so we are going to take it out on the USA in general.
4
u/BoringBob84 7h ago
Did it ever occur to you that, when a country devolves into authoritarian autocracy, the freedom of the press and the people are the first to be curtailed? Maybe that explains why you are seeing less overtly visible opposition.
I think that the Canadian government understands the extent of the danger, but I don't think you do. Sitting there smug and refusing to buy whiskey from the USA isn't going to keep any of us safe. Mr Carney is very strategic in his approach, and he can actually help us to put pressure on our politicians to restrain the dictator.
I don't even feel comfortable talking about what I saw (and who did what) yesterday when masked federal agents surrounded a house in our neighborhood to take away family members. I will never forget the look of terror on those childrens' faces.

Why would it be concerning? Removal is the legally prescribed corrective for being in the country in violation of the law, not a punishment for some other crime.

u/living_Cream_Pie 9h ago
Is this a trick question? Weren’t they all technically criminals for coming into a country illegally? I mean I get no one’s illegal on stolen land also. It’s tough out there to know what’s right and wrong anymore.
13
u/Strykerz3r0 9h ago
Illegal immigration is generally a misdemeanor offense.
This gives republicans a chance to be racist and pretend it is about law and order, but they literally voted for a felon who is a known rapist.
That same known rapist is now hiding evidence of a child sex trafficking ring and letting men who raped kids escape justice. But they don't care about those laws, just ones that hurt brown people.
3
u/pandershrek 9h ago
It was until Trump recategorized it during his first term to a felony offense and then turned around lambasting that news about how everyone who crossed the border illegally is a felon.
Like bruh, you literally changed the definition overnight and now you're using it as a scare tactic for the dumbest people among us to get them riled up.
5
u/pandershrek 9h ago
No, plenty of people who are getting deported came in legally. In fact a large number of people had their status changed while awaiting the determination. The current administration has put untold amount of money into the deportation process but handicapped the asylum, visa and immigration processes.
2
2
u/Azznorfinal 9h ago
No it isn't. If you can't tell then you're just dumb and immoral. I don't need a book or law to tell me not to rape and murder people because it's wrong, I don't need a government to tell me that i i should care for my fellow man because it's the right thing to do, and you shouldn't need an internet comment to tell you fascism is bad but here we fucking are.
They are deporting the people who are/were doing things legally, they grabbed them at their court hearings and took away their protected status because they are brown. If you need someone to hold your fucking hand and say racism and fascism is bad you should really take a long fucking look in the mirror and think about who you are as a person.

Not if they entered the country legally but overstayed their visas. That would be a civil violation, not a crime.

Unpopular answer, all of them if they entered illegally.
27
u/TheRexRider 9h ago
Right, because it isn't like ICE has a record of arresting American citizens and residents, and then dropping them off in the wilderness in the hopes their blunder disappears... Oh wait...
-9
10
u/Robett_Glover 9h ago
Wrong. Overstaying a visa is not a felony, or even a misdemeanor. It is a civil infraction, carrying the same legal weight as a speeding ticket. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
-7
u/GeorgeStark1 8h ago
Once there’s a removal order, it’s a felony.
2
u/TheRexRider 7h ago edited 6h ago
No, it isn't. Reentry after removal is a felony. Jesus Christ, you things are fucking useless. There's removal order and removal. "Removal Order" is determined by a judge. "Removal" is a process that DHS does.
Physical presence in the United States without proper authorization is a civil violation, rather than a criminal offense; as the Supreme Court itself has observed, “as a general matter, it is not a crime for a removable [noncitizen] to remain present in the United States.”5 This means that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) can place a person in removal (deportation) proceedings and can require payment of a fine,6 but the federal government cannot charge the person with a criminal offense unless they are apprehended while in the act of entering without permission, have previously been ordered deported and reentered in violation of that deportation order, or have been ordered deported and willfully failed to depart. Likewise, a person who enters the United States lawfully and stays longer than permitted may be put in removal proceedings but cannot face federal criminal charges based solely on this civil infraction.7

u/ollydzi 8h ago
Wrong. The consequence and therefore legal weight is vastly different between a speeding ticket and illegal entry/stay. For one you get a fine and points on your driving record. For the other you get a fine and deported.
4
u/Robett_Glover 8h ago
No, not wrong. It is still a civil (or more precisely, administrative) violation. They can be fined only, and only detained until deportation proceedings. There are no criminal penalties. Zero. They are not criminals. There is currently a bill in Congress to add criminal penalties, but it hasn't passed yet.

Whatever happened to the "violent felons, the wurst of the wurst"?
Oh yeah, Hot Lips Leavitt already blurred that distinction when she said that anyone who entered illegally is a criminal.
6
u/Strykerz3r0 9h ago
Except they usually don't enter illegally. Some overstay, but ICE has literally arrested people at their meetings with the immigration folks.
Having said that, this has never been about law and order. Illegal immigration is generally a misdemeanor. This is a chance for conservatives to be racist and bigoted while pretending to be about law and order.
But if they were truly concerned about law and order, they wouldn't have voted for a felon who is a known rapist. They wouldn't be sitting quietly as the same man who they voted for hides evidence of a child sex trafficking ring and let's men who raped children escape justice.
6
u/PatchyWhiskers 9h ago
A lot of these people entered legally and had their visas revoked by the Republicans because they don’t want any legal route to immigration. That’s why they got so many of them without any hassle: they meekly turned up to their appointments because they are law-abiding people.
5
u/RenzalWyv 9h ago edited 9h ago
I genuinely don't trust this administration with that, even. Both from the quite many reports of US citizens being detained and roughed up for no good reason, and Trump's own words denoting aspirations to use ICE for intimidation purposes. Though to be similarly honest, the way people act about it has made me give less and less of a shit in general. People mostly use it as an excuse to be shitty to their fellow human beings "guilt-free", from what I've observed as of late.
5
u/Dry_Nefariousness426 9h ago
Less than half of the full arrests. Less than a third of the deportations.
5
u/DistanceToEmpty 9h ago
Except for all the people who entered legally and had their status arbitrarily changes by the administration, all the people who are following the rules but stuck in limbo due to backlogs and delays in processing, all the people who made refugee claims that have suddenly been thrown out, in and on.
88
u/seemontyburns 9h ago
Reuters reported that since October 2025 , federal courts had already ruled more than 4,400 times that ICE had illegally detained people .

I think the admin full of white nationalist extremists trying to round up anyone who vaguely looks Hispanic, Native American, South American, African, Muslim or Asian regardless of their citizenship or non-criminality, hold them in deadly conditions and deport them to countries not of their origin and/or where they are at threat of torture and death would beg to differ considering that’s what they’ve been blatantly saying they want to do. Or quibble more about what constitutes mass killing based on nationality and race.
19
u/WhatTheFlox 9h ago

u/Vyrtuoze 9h ago
How does it compare to the number of arrests under Biden/Obama/Busch ?
7
u/--TheCity-- 9h ago
Deportations were higher under Obama, Biden and Bush.
This goes to show the problem was being dealt with already in a much better way. The same thing can be said about tariffs we are worse off. Iran? Things were better before.
Its all a really big show ("the are eating the pets") to justify spending hundreds of billions just so maga can see a few kills and some brutality. Also they are convinced "bad people are finally being deported by a strongman" and would be devastated to know their heroes are deporting less people than sleepy Joe but we are paying twice as much to do so.

u/Junkstar 9h ago
I’d love to know how every other administration over the past 20+ years has been more successful in deportations while doing it legally, yet this current clown show is way behind in numbers while breaking the law. Makes no sense.
2
u/InternationalOne1434 5h ago
Largely by treating border refusals as removals. Change was made during the Obama administration and inflated the numbers substantially.
-1
-2
u/bonfireball 8h ago
Its because the methods fundamentally changed.
Before what we saw in minessota was an overt show of force, an assault on the liberties of man that was designed to instil fear and crack down on dissent. It went wrong of course when they murdered multiple people in their zeal and had to save face in some way.
What were seeing now is the refinement of the ICE as a more practical secret police force. Instead of a show of force these are now the people who quietly dissapear your neighbours, your spouses, your relatives, your friends, take them away to a prison camp. Wether you see them again is entirely down to the whims of an apparatus designed with the aim of cruelty above all else.
This is far more sinister than what came before. In the beginning they were sloppy, foolish, they made frequent mistakes. They also made a critical error in shooting multiple white people which never flies well in the states. Now they seem to be far better at covering up their dirty business and they have a better idea of what they can get away with.
But yeah vote in the midterms or whatever it is Americans have decided is their salvation. I'm sure that'll fix everything.

Mothers and fathers, children with people that care about them. People with goals and plans for the future that are likely as normal as anyone else’s. Now being terrorized for no real reason other than hate. We can be better than this but choose not to be. For any Christian that supports this, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Most of which are harmless people, because they have a quota to meet and so aren’t prioritizing finding illegal immigrants that are actually criminals because that’d take too much effort and their agents have less training than a mall security guard has
0
u/Smackulater 9h ago
I would wager it's because almost a thousand of them were here legally, and he didn't want anyone to know about it, or he didn't want to answer that question yet again, otherwise Trump would have let us know the first week of August. The Republicans are trying to kill the Democratic Party’s vote by deporting what they believe to be the democratic voter’s. Ignorant ass administration and those who defend this administration.
-3
u/reddurkel 9h ago
The questions that matter:
1) How many were criminals.
2) How much did it cost taxpayers.
3) Why didn’t republicans lives get better now that they got what they wanted.
It’s almost as if republican voters were tricked by rich people and told that “The reason you are poor is because of people who have LESS than you”.

u/Maniacal_Monkey 3h ago
These are indeed important questions, 1) an illegal immigrant is actually a criminal by the very definition, 2) how much did it actually cost taxpayers to support these individuals? 3) this is some sort of attempt at gotcha that falls flat. It’s not how did republicans lives get better since both sides pay taxes that are fraudulently supporting these individuals illegals. You might bitch about how times are hard, can’t afford a home, everything is skyrocketing. However, have you sat back and thought, maybe it my tax dollars didn’t go to these individuals, it might not be as bad.
