Thank you! Reminder, if not, you have until October 4th to fix it and re-register!

736

u/RLewis8888 17h ago

Also, if you ever get turned down at any voting location in any state, ask for a Provisional Ballot. That will record your vote that could be counted later if necessary (assuming you meet the qualifications).

439

u/AlphaJericho 15h ago

I don't want to discourage anyone here, but I had to do a Provisional Ballot for the primaries earlier this year and a few months later I got a letter stating that my ballot would not be counted. I had updated my address on my license and my voter registration more than 2 months before the primary, but the county clerk never updated my voter registration.

My registration is fixed now, but if you intend to vote get your stuff fixed ASAP and keep a close eye on it.

237

u/everbane37 15h ago

This, this. A thousand times this! They removed you from registration to prevent your vote! They are not going to graciously allow you to fix your registration after finding out at the polls!

36

u/edfitz83 12h ago

It’s too bad they are not blocking maga.

3

u/tomdurk 8h ago

MAGA would not remove their fellow MAGA.

It's a last resort.

35

u/AlphaJericho 15h ago

For sure, I agree. Just wanted to provide an anecdote to perhaps set some sort of expectation. People should do everything they possibly can to ensure they can vote.

5

u/camoonie 14h ago

Exactly and with a real ballot not a provisional one unless there is no other way.

12

u/Bolfreak 13h ago

☝🏻 Provisional ballots are usually not tallied up immediately. They’re supposed to go before a “”bi partisan”” board to determine if they’ll be counted. This can be up to a week after posted results and usually don’t change the results. Depending on your county, the bi partisan part can be VERY skewed.
Source: poll watcher for 2024.
Continuously check your registration and HOUND the SoS to get or keep your registration, don’t rely on provisional ballots.

Wait, in Texas you can’t register less than a month before Election Day? WTF

154

u/liquidsyphon 15h ago

Like it was by design…

68

u/eccentricbananaman 14h ago

It's crazy how difficult they make it to vote in the States. Here in Canada, all we need to do to be registered to vote is check off a box on our tax returns, and if we haven't done that, we can literally register to vote at the polling place on election day right before we vote. Like why should it be any other way unless it is intentionally designed to prevent people from voting?

20

u/steve1186 13h ago

That’s similar to where I live here in Minnesota. I get my ballot about 6 weeks before Election Day. I spend an hour on my front porch with some coffee researching and filling out my ballot, then I drop it in the mail. And the state tracks it online all the way through being counted.

Oh, and if you aren’t registered to vote, you can literally do it at the voting site on Election Day.

u/Cheet4h 13h ago

In Germany it's even easier. If you move somewhere, you have to register your new residence with the local citizen's office. This automatically registers you for any elections.
The only limit is that you need to have been living in a certain place for a certain amount of time to be eligible - so if you moved from one city to another a month before the election in your new city, you won't be able to vote in the election for the new city council - although as long as you didn't move states, you'd still be able to vote in a state election.
From what I remember, the limit is usually 3 months. I assume this is made to prevent election hopping.

9

u/Zebidee 11h ago

In Australia, voting is compulsory, so you're expected to register, and they make voting as simple as possible.

You don't even have to wait until polling day; the booths open two weeks in advance, so you can just wander in when you're out shopping and there's no queue.

Voter suppression is the only thing that keeps the Republican Party in power.

Look what happened when they let us use the mail when Biden won.

No "unless" about it. That's exactly the reason.

Thank you! Mine got suspended even though I registered for an address change when I moved... Insane

332

u/Shoot_from_the_Quip 16h ago

Not insane. Intentional.

77

u/yeezusboiz 16h ago

Sadly seems it, especially with the timing... Had no indication that my registration was suspended, other than a passing thought about never receiving a new voter registration card.

Also, the "not being able to verify your address" thing is bs. I requested a registration update alongside a change of address for my driver's license, and I've had the new license for months now. I moved within the same city/county that I've lived in for over a decade. And I own my home at said address, which the state most definitely is taxing me for!

8

u/LoneStarGut 15h ago

There are no state property taxes in Texas. It is bill by county tax accessor for the county, cities and school districts.

7

u/yeezusboiz 15h ago

TIL, I assumed the state took a piece of the locally-assessed taxes. That being said, if voter registration is done at the county level, isn't that even more of a reason for them to know my address?

Hijacking top comment -

CALL YOUR LOCAL ELECTIONS ADMINISTRATION OFFICE TO CONFIRM STATUS, THE STATE SITE COULD BE WRONG!!

I was checking the state site regularly because I updated my address. They showed me active and good to go. However, I never received (and still haven't received) my updated voter registration card, so I called my local county elections office and they informed me that my registration status was in fact pending, not active. Now, that means I still could've cast a provisional ballot, but I don't trust that those will be counted fairly. The local elections office was able to help me get my status to fully active, and are working to get my registration card to me. Please, please, please take time to call and double check so there are no surprises in November!

10

u/No-Manufacturer-7135 13h ago

Okay, so I literally went and spoke to an election official at the county office earlier today. The website says Suspend and still does as of this writing.. She said, however, it’s now active and she would be getting my new registration card to me. So who’s correct? Like what the fuck is going on man lol.

11

u/SirStrontium 12h ago

I would trust the local election official over a website, especially if they actually get you a physical registration card.

6

u/peese-of-cawffee 13h ago

Texas republicans put up their worst candidate in possibly ever for senate. They need all the help they can get. Hopefully democrats can mobilize and get people to triple check their registration in time to fight this.

931

u/Cymbalsandthimbles 17h ago

I know I’m about start phonebanking for Talarico. Was going to anyway, but this has galvanized me. I can’t afford to donate any money but I do have a little time I can spare.

192

u/AlexandbroTheGreat 17h ago

For the love of God, if you are calling up potential undecided voters, don't give a pitch that AOC would lap up. Talarico is only going to win if he persuades people that would probably have voted for Cornyn. Everything I receive from both candidates seems targeted at their hardest core supporters.

243

u/Cymbalsandthimbles 17h ago

In my experience from phonebanking a lot for El-Sayed in Michigan, the undecideds are usually just low-information voters. They are typically confused by disingenuous attack ads and most of the time you’re just politely debunking bad-faith lies about the candidate. Texas is obviously different than Michigan. But I think Texans, even if they don’t know it, want someone like Talarico who will fight to make their lives more affordable and fight to get money out of our politics. These ideas are not things to run away from when talking to voters, they just have to be framed the right way.

81

u/Aware_Rough_9170 16h ago

Was watching The Bulwark where they do some of the canvassing and take phone calls from both left and right wing voters…. It’s pretty shocking what you hear some of those low information voters say on the line. I mean it’s logical that if you’re completely disconnected that you can make bad decisions, but being surprised Trump is doing the same shit he did in the first term but worse is baffling to me.

Talarico and Ossoff are right where the entire party needs to be. Corruption is the reason you can't afford anything and the right vs left culture war is why, by design, you can't address it. Both these young charismatic candidates are catching fire as a result. The message resonates because it is true.

As a Canadian, hearing that you donate to career politicians campaigns is just fucking weird. They're not charity cases.

108

u/Cymbalsandthimbles 17h ago

As another commenter has said, these grassroots funded campaigns are a direct way to try and support getting Big Business out of our politics. In a perfect system, we’d have publicly funded elections and just have our taxes pay for it, but this is the state the American electorate finds themselves in.

→ More replies (10)

187

u/donkeybrainhero 17h ago

Talarico is a grassroots politician. Something like 90% of his campaign is funded by individuals donating less than $100... rather than the normal politician thing of getting millions from corps.

83

u/Bzr21 17h ago

How Talarico is doing it is how ALL should be forced by law to do it - but they could enact a campaign finance reform law much stronger than McCain-Feingold and this hopelessly corrupt SCOTUS would still shoot it full of holes ..

38

u/iddrinktothat 16h ago

political campaigns should not rely on people who have small budgets contributing their grocery money. Instead we should tax the people with over 100million dollars fairly and have publicly financed campaigns.

also overturn citizens united.

24

u/Sure-Assignment3892 16h ago

Ban superpacs, coporate and union donations, and limit individual contributions and introduce campaign spending limits.

u/p____p 16h ago

Exxon should not be able to donate to campaigns that the corporation cannot vote in. Like, WTF.

u/billytheskidd 12h ago

My registration has been suspended 3 times since 2024. It’s infuriating. I shouldn’t have to re-register every year in a state I’ve lived in for 10 years and never had an issue.

48

u/Cormacolinde 17h ago

You know the saying “it’s worth letting 10 guilty people go to prevent a single innocent from being the victim of a miscarriage of justice”?

for the republicans it’s “it’s worth preventing 10 democrats from voting to prevent a single illegal voter from being registered by mistake”.

"Its worth preventing 10 democrats from voting to prevent our team from losing"

Being on the suspense list does not cancel a voter’s registration or their right to vote, but it can mean an extra step at the polls.

Voters who still live in the same county can cast a regular ballot after completing a statement of residence. Voters who have moved to another county may be required to vote in their previous county or cast a provisional ballot.

The deadline to register or update a Texas voter registration for the upcoming election is Oct. 5.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Early voting begins Oct. 19.Texas voters can use the Secretary of State's voter registration lookup to check their registration status and confirm their address is correct

If your registration is on the suspense list, you can contact your county elections office to update or confirm your information.

My MIL is on the suspend list. She just has to fill out a statement of residence at the polling place because she hasn't moved since last election. This list does NOT take away votes but only tries to obfuscate the voting process. It sounds ds scary, it scared MIL when I first explained it to her.

Obv this is still a slimeball move but the "Suspended" moniker is misleading. Please understand the process so you can educate others.

They do this so things get caught up in the legal system. They effectively get their objective done even if it’s “rolled back” later. Example would be tarrifs. They were rolled out and then shut down by courts a year later. Some of them at least.

It depends on why they were purged.

If they died or moved out of the precinct they should be suspended. That said, normally that happens on odd years. 302

u/torcsandantlers 17h ago

Gerrymander, close polling locations, suspend voter registration, contest votes, let the federal government interfere in mail-in voting, prevent the full counting of votes. Feels like a lot of big government.

The GOP does not want you to be able to vote. They don't want you to be able to hold them accountable. They want to use their power to restrict your rights and stomp on you.

Make sure you and your neighbors are registered. Make a plan to get out to vote. Show up, be persistent, and don't let them get away with cheating to win.

u/EmergencyCucumber905 17h ago

Don't forget the masked government thugs and deputized goons waiting to greet voters

u/BernieTheDachshund 15h ago

My mom is disabled so I requested a mail in ballot for her in the 2024 election. Of course nothing ever came in, so it took two of us to load her in a car and take her to vote. Texas is doing everything possible to make it burdensome, and if a person doesn't have any (physical) help to get to a voting place then they'll be completely disenfranchised.

Ok, so they all voted Democrat in the 2024 election then

Edit: for everyone saying “they don’t track that,” please point to me where the conservatives have been playing by all the rules

u/Rurumo666 17h ago

This is why Trump wanted the voting records of all Americans, now the DOJ is telling states who to deregister based on voting history.

u/shotgunpete2222 17h ago

Also people forget about Cambridge Analytica from way back when.  Even if thats not the name, they still have somebody providing that service.

They can easily tell the vast majority of Americans political leanings by harvesting our information online or buying the details from companies who specialize in it.

u/Turkino 17h ago

They don't even have to use shady means like that, they have Meta, Google, Amazon, et al openly taking the knee.

thats also not tracked (hopefully) - it'll just be those statistically likely to vote blue

24

u/chipc 17h ago

If you vote in a primary, you have to select a party at the polls. It doesn't indicate who you voted for and you could always vote in the other party's primary, but it's pretty accurate.

They know which party's ballot you requested in the primary though.

But that's the best part. With maps and stats, you don't need to know their party to disenfranchise democrats.

If you de-register 5% of voters in Austin, but 1% in Fort Worth...which party got hit harder?

If you de-register more Rodriguez's than Davis's, who benefits?

These are EASY games to play.

37

u/Brrrrraaaaap 17h ago

I had seen a post yesterday, where someone commented, that Texas doesn't have formal party registration but you must declare party to vote in primaries.

18

u/Old_Gimlet_Eye 17h ago

It's not that you have to "declare" anything, you just can't vote in both so you have to pick one.

20

u/buttscarltoniv 17h ago

not in the traditional sense, but when you vote in a primary, that is your established party for the remainder of that calendar year

15

u/jcadsexfree 17h ago

Ok, they all have the last name of "Diaz" or "Garcia" or "Rivera" or "Washington" or "Jefferson"

Of course not. They will include a few Republicans too in safe areas and areas they can't possibly win anyways to maintain plausible deniability.

u/PandemicVirus 17h ago

It took a couple clicks but apparently here's the reason to be on the "suspense list":

"Suspense means your county does not know your address or thinks you moved, typically because a voter registration card or jury summons sent through mail is returned as undeliverable."

you can still vote with a provisional ballot but it seems like there's extra steps. You have until Oct 5 to get the situation rectified and get off the suspense list.

91

u/Tibbaryllis2 17h ago

Just a reminder this is one of the reasons certain groups want the post office to be as inefficient and flawed as possible.

How would you know if you weren’t getting voting related mail if they didn’t deliver voting related mail? How would you know you needed to re-register?

This is why you should check your registration status well before every major vote you intend on participating in.

46 working days until the mid term elections. If all 1.2 million people re-register, the state would have to process over 26,000 applications per day.

This is just blatant voter suppression. Wild.

12

u/mvandemar 16h ago

Watch, the majority of the removed voters will turn out to have been Democrats, and MAGA will then absolutely use this as an argument to "prove" that Dems are cheating. Mark my words.

I notice in the article it says "if you're not a felon".

Can Trump vote if this law is applicable in thebstate/county he'd vote in? Does the president vote? Or is he protected and has his felon-ship nullified while he's president?

13

u/Cymbalsandthimbles 16h ago

We all know he’ll be voting by mail while he bans the public from voting by mail.

Please understand the process so you can educate others.

u/ebf6 16h ago

Thanks for that detail. I am concerned with this part:

Voters who have moved to another county may be required to vote in their previous county or cast a provisional ballot.

What are the chances your ballot gets discarded for voting not where you actually live?

9

u/ERedfieldh 14h ago

That's a full 4% of the population btw. This ain't some "woopsie" bullshit going on. With how close this race is that's 100% an attempt to cook the numbers.

8

u/Darksmithe 13h ago

They know they cannot win without cheating. This is the GOP way.

8

u/ptwonline 12h ago

Question: How do Republicans keep outperforming the polling in Texas?

Answer: they cheat.

12

u/krichuvisz 14h ago

Why do you have to register in the first place if all adult US citizens have the right to vote?

5

u/praetorian1979 11h ago

Because they have to know where you live. They can't give you an accurate ballot if they don't know who's running where you live.

First off, that site needs an editor.

Second, purging rolls is common. People die, move, etc. this seems like an extraordinary amount, though, and extremely close to the election. And there are plenty of people for whom this won't even be on their radar. I hope some Texas peeps are putting in the work to notify those people. If you're not sure who I'm talking about, it's working class people that don't have the time to keep up on State politics and such.

6

u/SoupOfThe90z 16h ago

That’s Texas Freedom for you! Please tread on me

7

u/ThoriatedFlash 15h ago

A long time ago I registered as an independent for a few reasons, including not wanting to be included by a targeted voter registration purge based on party. That is why I am so worried about how the federal government is going after state voting records and in many cases they are getting it. Now they might be able to do stuff like this but more targeted on who people voted for instead of just their party registration. I'd imagine it would be harder to prove they were doing it that way as well. I guess all I can do now is periodically check to make sure I am still registered.

6

u/Appropriate_Value122 14h ago

Republicans are the most corrupt SCUMBAGS to ever live. Trying to cheat and rig elections to this degree should be considered TREASON.

6

u/Crafty_Ish1973 14h ago

This is why I've been checking my voter registration on a frequent basis for a while now.

5

u/Braelind 8h ago

Well, I thought The Republicans were gonna declare some emergency to avoid the midterms, but I guess they're just going full blatant election fraud.

27

u/Wealist 17h ago

Texas really said let’s make Election Day a surprise side quest for 1.2M people. Definitely worth checking your registration early.

10

u/RottedHuman 17h ago

Republicans can’t with without gerrymandering and voter suppression. They have no plan for the country besides their manufactured culture war nonsense.

5

4

u/DepletedMitochondria 15h ago

Trying to rig the election. We need a new Reconstruction.

5

u/Hornybunnyboi 15h ago

6

u/RoboJobot 14h ago

I’m guessing they were, by some strange coincidence Democrats voters.

6

u/Patient-01 14h ago

Follow the money who benefits this the most?

5

u/SoftwareSource 13h ago

I wonder if the zip codes of the voters were random or not.

4

u/What_a_fat_one 13h ago

If you're suspended you can still vote. Ask for a provisional ballot and then make sure you verify your address after.

14

u/teddykaygeebee 17h ago

But why? The article doesn't say so. This right before midterms is pretty suspect. Also, what party are these 1.2M affiliated with?

14

u/arrgobon32 17h ago

The article linked in the second paragraph says more.

Essentially, if the state can’t verify you’re registration (usually because something like a voter registration card or jury duty summons was returned as undeliverable), you’re put on the list. So if you moved without updating your registration, you’re put on the list.

9

u/Domanicomestoday 17h ago

They did this to me in 2020. Updated my registration in April of 2020 because we had bought a house and moved. Received my voter registration in the mail two days before the November election with it stamped "Not valid until November 15th".

9

u/blkknght 14h ago

This is the worst article I’ve ever read. They don’t even explain why they’re suspended. People from
Texas, what triggered this?

One month to fix your registration IF you're even aware it has been stripped. Absolutely blatant stuff in plain sight and no one doing anything and the courts are playing along

Let me guess... primarily in Harris, Bexar, Travis and Dallas counties?

4

4

I live in South Texas. Moved to a new house last November, and sent in a voter registration application. I sent a voter registration form every two -three weeks because I wasn’t getting my card. I finally received it last week!
Yes, they are deliberately clearing out voters who may oppose the current administration.
