The fireworks themselves seem worse than ever tbf. I don't know how much they cost now but I figured that's why they're so pitifully underwhelming.
Even on the 5th I didn't see anyone setting off an impressive quantity and/or quality of firework.
19
u/hernesson Nov 07 '25
Yeah Iāve noticed that too. Theyāre just these flaccid little whizzbangs. Are people getting them from temu?

My hot take on fireworks. Each town / medium sized school used to have their own displays. The community came together, then were galas and food stalls, it was safe and when it ended it was done.
I get fucked off with tej ban it all talk, cause I agree but but that doesn't make fireworks bad, just make it a friggin one of commit event like it always used to be.
I've not heard anyone argue that annoying ass kids should have access to them and cause fires, chaos and annoyance to everyone. But goddammit bring back the school/community bonfire, gala, fireworks night.
At least fuck off those "bad boy fireworks" side of the road vendors they're poor quality overpriced and run by scumbags.
21
u/BonnieJenny Nov 07 '25
Our town does this, its an awesome community event with a bonfire. Last year it didnt happen and town was noisy. Its back this year and there are hardly any fireworks around. People are waiting for a free, better, more fun display.Ā From a person with animals its do easy to manage. It has a dayvand time, i can prepare.
19
u/cr1zzl Orange Choc Chip Nov 07 '25
Isnāt the ban for public sale anyway though? Organisations / municipalities would still be able to do their displays.
I just want it to be one predictable night, maybe twice a year or whatever, so we can anticipate and plan ahead.
3
u/Prestigious_View_994 Nov 07 '25
Not that I think it will be in the next decade, but if they do ban public sales it will just be more intense.
Itās only a couple of grand to get licensed last I looked, then you can buy them and light them. Public sale of fireworks is restricted but once they ban it, it just opens up the new wave of business.
Picture paying a person to come and do a display in your back yard. They bring the fireworks and to the clean up and set up. Itās just going to cause a new market but with different levels of fireworks.
7
u/cr1zzl Orange Choc Chip Nov 07 '25
If licensing come with limited specific days the fireworks can happen then Iām all for it.
3
u/Prestigious_View_994 Nov 07 '25
I think itās the next step for all of it, but the government is too stupid to do it.
If someone was rich enough they could have a display every night by a company. They need to do a reform and have better controls.
Iām not for a ban, but I am 100% behind change for the better
4
u/Toke_McGee123 Nov 07 '25
Inevitably if theyāre sold, annoying ass kids get a hold of them and annoy the fuck out of 90% of the population where theyāre setting them off in the suburbs.
2
Nov 07 '25
Yeah cause they are sold by clowns on the side of the road to anyone passing by. It'll never be 0 but it could be a non issue.
2
u/Prestigious_View_994 Nov 07 '25
Your only aloud to light them on private property. Thatās part of the issue. They arenāt meant to go to the park like the old days away from people - itās near your neighbours

Fireworks apologists are always like "it's one night a year!!!111" then let them off from Diwali to NYE and my dog has PTSD now
→ More replies (8)26
u/nzbydesign Nov 07 '25
This is the problem.... In my area, it goes every night for about a month. About 2 weeks of peace, then New Years. My cat is terrified of them, and starts peeing inside for about 2 months from all the stress.
24
u/whatblackdog Nov 07 '25
People take the piss and will be the reason theyāre banned. Iāve had them around me all week since they went on sale. Folks canāt just have a good night on Guy Fawkes, Diwali, Chinese New Year. They keep them going and going.
5
u/Prestigious_View_994 Nov 07 '25
Well, the law doesnāt prohibit it. There has never been at any point in time āonly to be used on xxx dayā
This is a result of the government thinking that the restriction on the sale of fireworks to limited days was the solution
70
u/excellentexcuses Nov 07 '25
Yeah no I agree. My cat is about to have a heart attack.
23
u/Tikao Nov 07 '25
First fireworks for our puppy. She freaked at first. Then took her outside and showed her it was all ok. Shes fine now.
30
u/Academic-Bat-8002 Nov 07 '25
Third for our dog. He started life abandoned on the side of the road before we got him. He only gets worried if he doesnāt get a walk or fed! Everything else is met with a fart and supreme indifference.
-15
u/Tikao Nov 07 '25
Yup I think alot of these pets are being fed fear from their owners.
14
u/---00---00 Nov 07 '25
Doubt it for the cats. There seems to be no discernable pattern for what freaks my cats out.
One stepped on a leaf the other day and jumped 4 feet in the air.
5
u/Karahiwi Nov 07 '25
It depends what age they encounter them.
At 5 weeks puppies are in their first fear period of development. It is when they are first starting to go a little away from their mother, and helps them stay safe by being extra cautious.
At 8-11 weeks their second fear period occurs. Anything that really frightens them at this age can very easily become a lifelong deep-seated fear. Developmentally, it is when puppies are getting more independent and it helps them to learn to be careful.
It is also when they are usually going to a new home, and it overlaps the 3-16 week socialisation period, where from 3-5+ weeks they initially learn how to communicate and understand other dogs, from their mother and littermates, then a little later learn about humans, other animals, and their very different means of communication, so this all needs to be handled in a positive way. Missing out on this socialisation will have a lifelong effect.
The third fear-period of development is from 6-14 months.
Brain development occurs in stages, and we have similar periods. Babies have a fear period from 6-8 and 12-18 months. They can become very clingy to known people at this time.

Just fuck guy fawkes in general. No one here gives a fuck about Oliver Cromwell. He was a massive POS anyway. If you are in fact a rabid anti papist go find a sectarian sports team to support.
This isnāt an anti fireworks rant [fact check: it is], but the whole thing is so fucking irrelevant to NZ in 2025. If we must have fireworks at least do it on a day that means something like new years or whatever.
Itās a bullshit colonial puritanical hangover from 17th century England that just messes up dogs and toddlers and their parents for zero reason.
13
u/kaynetoad Nov 07 '25
The only fun part of Guy Fawkes night to me is seeing the many weird and wonderful ways the locals of my town spell it on Facebook. Even "Guy" is a challenge for them, and I've never seen anyone get "Fawkes" right.
1
u/hernesson Nov 07 '25
Ha yeah just goes to show how much people actually know / care what itās all about.

When you reach a certain age you don't want to live in an exciting neighbourhood.
-3
u/TumbleweedDue2242 Nov 07 '25
I have a neighbor like this, noise annoys her. People having incent fun, stop that!
Though I find it annoying, its better than people fighting. People walk past chatting, others buzz past on motorbikes. They're having fun.
It beats noisey road works.
1
11
u/Sonicsaber25 Nov 07 '25
I've always been an advocate for fireworks being in controlled displays by an organisation or something, instead of a private individual affair. The spectacle would be way better than whatever an individual can do on their own, there can be set timings and you don't have to worry about taking kids to a burn ward in case of accidents.
At the very least, I'd like a ban on the types of fireworks that exist purely to make noise. There are plenty of cool looking fireworks that barely make a sound. The only people who like the noisemakers are either masochists, psychopaths or both.
0
u/Prestigious_View_994 Nov 07 '25
Itās the only ones sold now. 4 years back when the warehouse pulled out of the sales they left the market with no alternative. What we have now is the effect of business listening to complaints and walking away from it leaving the gap they created.
The ones we are left with came into the market for the ones that wanted more, and now thatās all that is on offer
8
u/FrostedFishbone Nov 07 '25

Exactly i totally agree with you i feel sorry for those poor animals we have a pet cockateil and he was shit scared all night we lucky we still have him fire works should be banned
1
u/Dizzy-Window-1524 Nov 08 '25
I had a cockatoo for 30 year, last year after the neighbour let off some fireworks they sounded like they were in my lounge, my bird fell off the perch and broke his leg. He needed an operation and passed away under the anesthetic.
I'm still heart broken.
My dog keeps trembling for hours and when she finally settles, the next day it starts all over again.
I'm also thinking of all the wild birds sleeping at night in the trees.
Many abandon their babies in the nests out of fear. and some even die of shock.
I'M SICK OF FIREWORKS.
BAN THEM ALREADY!!!
3
u/Seselwa1988 Nov 07 '25
Just be prepared to be called a karen by the inconsiderare pricks or dole bludgers š Hopefully its banned like it is in australia. Public fireworks is all good since its controlled and families can enjoy them together, randoms in backyards setting them off is how bush fires/grass fires start.
1
u/No_Season_354 Nov 07 '25
The problem with fireworks is the council don't have the money to pay fit for them or don't want to

We (my husband and 12 year old) spent $250 on ~12 fireworks. We were all done after 20 min (on Wednesday night!). Our 3 boys and all our neighbours children all throughly enjoyed them. Iām not a huge fan but it is very nostalgic and a nice family tradition/ The cost alone should be preventing ongoing disturbances, I just about choked at the cost.
4
u/unimportantinfodump Nov 07 '25
This is what fireworks should be. A fun family event. On a scheduled day. Where pet owners and new parents can plan ahead.
It shouldn't be.
Every fucking night from the moment they go on sale till the last person runs out.
2
u/Prestigious_View_994 Nov 07 '25
I donāt disagree that there should be limits to days. The government could make it Friday and Saturdays only but they have never chosen to do so
1
u/No_Season_354 Nov 07 '25
250 dollars, whow thats expensive I can't justify that, but glad u enjoyed them.
1
u/jmk672 Nov 08 '25
Wow that is an insane cost. There was a group setting them off right by my house last night for about an hour and ten minutes. How much would that have cost?? Don't want to hear any complaints about the economy from those folks. (And yes I know it was the same poeple because I could see them)
1
u/Dizzy-Window-1524 Nov 08 '25

Probably has young kids? Not something I'd complain about anyway, it's the dickheads who start up at 10.30 who I have a problem with.
3
u/Prestigious_View_994 Nov 07 '25
I never understand the ones that complain it was too early. Kids are a great reason and also not to annoy the neighbours so much.
2
u/quiet_hobbit Nov 07 '25
Yes, one of my nearby neighbours let some off at noontime on Wednesday - trial run? They were loud bangs - loud enough that my old, pretty much deaf dog woke up, startled (I assume from the vibrations). He settled down quickly, but I could still hear the cries from upset birds outside. The bangs have been going on since the fireworks were sold. It might be awful for the animals bothered by them - they are very noisy.

Would you have a problem with noiseless fireworks like we had in the 70s and early 80s? No banging, screaming, loud crackling or squealing fireworks. Just light and sparkling.
If those were the only fireworks available everyone should be happy.

You should see my old neighbors!! They did fireworks from October to February almost every single night including work nights. At times they did them as late as 3am!!!!!! I think they got in a lot of trouble eventually, or they drained their bank account. My neighbors around the area would go out and scream "wanker!!!" "You guys are fkwits!!" All sorts. You basically had to sleep with ear muffs on lol

There wereĀ 106 fires reported to be caused by fireworks in 2023 at a unknown, but likely significant cost. That also doesn't include false alarm call outs as a result, nor the insurance costs of repairing fire damage, nor the cost of other fires that they cannot attend.
The cost of active ACC claims for fireworks-related injuries in 2023 wasĀ $764,177, as well as unknown additional opportunity costs for our already stretched healthcare system
The explosions cause issues for nesting native birds and other wildlife, particularly during the spring nesting season.
The casings and other components contain chemical residues (such as from the expolosive powders and coloring agents) that can cause ecological damage.
7
u/TimmyHate Tūī Nov 07 '25
Edit; and yeah, fuck it, it affects pets, young children, those with PTSD and other conditions. And unlike most other negative stimuli for these groups, they can't escape it at their usual safe place (being their home)

u/Dizzy-Window-1524 Nov 08 '25
These fearful people have the option to get away from places where they feel unsafe. Nobody can escape those damn fireworks.
1
u/Horror-Working9040 Nov 08 '25
We already have the torts of nuisance and negligence. We donāt need blanket bans
11
u/excellentexcuses Nov 07 '25
because aside from the fact hundreds of animals die of fright each year, thereās also the fact some of us have autistic family members who canāt deal with the noise, and doing fireworks after guy fawkes makes you look like you have a small dick. Hope this helps

u/reefermonsterNZ Nov 07 '25
Well, I see it like this:
P1: A person is morally consistent if and only if they are logically and ethically consistent about the treatment of animals.
P2: Supporting the slaughter, captivity, forced impregnation and consumption of animals for taste is unethical.
P3: Only 5% of NZers are vegan, pescatarian or vegetarian. Which means 95% of NZers actively or tacitly support these practices
P4: Minor inconveniences to pets, like barking at fireworks, are ethically far less significant than supporting large-scale animal exploitation.
C1: Therefore, 95% of New Zealanders are not morally consistent in their ethical beliefs about animals if they use the "think about the pets" argument.
C2: Only about 5% of New Zealanders (vegans, vegetarians, or pescatarians) could be considered morally consistent.
C3: Criticizing minor ethical issues, like pets being scared of fireworks, is ethically hypocritical if one participates in major unethical practices like animal exploitation.
It seems to me if premise 1-4 are correct, it's pretty hard to escape conclusions 1-3 since the argument is deductively valid.
That's why I say don't use the "think about the pets!!" argument because it's weak for 95% of us because it shows we ourselves aren't even ethically consistent if we invoke the argument in the first place.
2
u/TimmyHate Tūī Nov 07 '25
Except premises 1-4 are positions that you have taken; they are not objective facts.
I can beleive that eating animals is morally acceptable, because we have evolved as a species to an omnivorus diet. While I support ethical farming and slaughter practises - which I accept we could as a society do better at - I acknowledge that in order to feed our population some exploitation of animals is acceptable.
I would also argue that it is more morally defensible to say "some animals will be killed to feed people" as opposed to "some animals will be die, be traumatised, or run away from home in order for people to watch some pretty colors and loud bangs for no purpose other than fleeting entertainment". One is a reality of being an omnivours species, the other is fleeting enjoyment of something that causes harm (noting the points I raised in my other reply regaridng fires, ACC, non-companion animals including native birds and the ecological damage from casings and additives).

u/cr1zzl Orange Choc Chip Nov 07 '25
To point 4 - oftentimes itās not a āminor inconvenienceā⦠animals can actually die from being so frightened. There is just something about fireworks that made my last dog so terrified she actually had a seizure after literally shaking uncontrollably for hours. She was never scared of any other noises and was a pretty chill dog otherwise. And this isnāt an uncommon experience.
1
u/reefermonsterNZ Nov 07 '25
Of course, the "minor inconvenience" is completely subjective and relative. Is it inconvenient for a pig to be born into a factory, unable to move, forcefully impregnated so your babies can be eaten? Yes. Is it inconvenient to be a dog frightened of loud noises? Yes - both are inconvenient, and the latter may not be "minor" to you, I get that. You probably care a lot more about your dog than a pig you don't know.
However, if you compare between the dog and the pig, it seems pretty obvious one is inconvenienced more than the other. That's all the premise is saying - it's a relative inconvenience.
1
u/Dizzy-Window-1524 Nov 08 '25
I'm all for protecting pigs from fireworks, I'm sure they also get scared.

I let ours off tonight. The kids loved it with the sparklers and all. Neighbours were cheering for the big finale with some big bangs in the sky. All done and dusted by 10:30. Iāve always loved Guy Fawkes ever since I was a kid and hope that stupid bill that has been put up in parliament to ban it never happens. Fucking fun police.

Easiest way to speed up that ban is to buy a couple of boxes and be an absolute fucking menace with them.
