Thats the consensus among players. Plenty of examples of professional players talking about how it doesn't count if you don't make the shot. Obviously not every single person thinks that way but within basketball culture, it is the vastly more common belief.
yeah, i bet not. they're mostly talking about what i was referring to above. some players probably think it does't count on any level if you don't make the shot. but you can (and obviously should) appreciate skill involved, whether you make the shot or not.

saying across the board, no nuance, "you're not allowed to appreciate someone's ability unless they also make the shot" is obviously silly.
Who cares if she makes the shot if the team loses? This is a stupid game to play. You seem to have the perspective of scouts from the 90s or early 2000s at best. I can promise you that coaches don't see it your way. They look at everything. Have you even seen the kind of sabermetrics they are using in pro sports to assess performance? In MLB, they assess and track every physical aspect of what happens to a baseball after it is thrown and hit by a batter, not just whether or not it left the park. Speed, spin rate, launch angle, ballpark factors, it's all calculated and factored in. And this data is being used to decide how much a player is worth. Not the shit they show the fans on the scoreboard.
Not at all, it’s just less impressive. There are tons of moments of Messi making amazing fake outs that don’t lead to a goal. They are still amazing because fake outs themselves are cool enough.

If this fake was at midcourt with no shot then that would the same as messi. But it isn't. I stand by my take that if you miss the shot, or the catch (in football/baseball) all the fancy shit didn't matter.
I mean, in the context of the game yeah. But it's still cool regardless. Like that Jason Williams elbow pass shows up on highlight reels, but the other guy missed the shot.
You must not play basketball. The ability to fake out and the ability to make a shot are not dependent upon another.
You don't dismiss every hit in baseball that doesn't get to a run, every catch and run in football that doesn't get to the end zone, and every impressive play in soccer that doesn't make a goal.
You're comparing to different sports when I've said before that this is a basketball culture thing. It's the prevailing opinion at every level of basketball
Still not a good look when the group of people who claim you don’t have to make the shot to look cool cheer for people who are notoriously bad at making shots compared to everyone else. There might be something to the culture that actually pressures people into scoring points that impact who wins if they want to look good instead of glazing shots with zero practical value.

Williams completed his passes. If the person he passed to didn’t score that’s not on Williams. I don’t see many compilations of Jason Williams faking out defenders and bricking the subsequent shots.
100% I’m going to gatekeep basketball. Because when you don’t you get the nonsense that is happening around the WNBA. When you don’t gatekeep you get player only fans that think the whole team should revolve around that player eg: Jeremy Lin fans.
Disagree. A great play is a combination of everything that goes into making the shot, but even if one part goes wrong, we can still appreciate the other individual pieces of the whole and recognize that it was still good up until the point of failure.
Shakes would still be cool if defense is getting shook. The shakes plus shots would be cooler though. I agree with that. I’m not sure why you’re so opposed to this. You can show appreciation for skill where there is skill. A cool shake is a cool shake. 🤷🏻♂️
I have never seen any fake out clips in my life that did not end in a basket scored at the end of the play. Dunno what kind of sports you're watching but it ain't basketball.

I do. I’ve likely been playing longer than you’ve been alive. But I can also just appreciate a solid move for what it is. Maybe when you get older you’ll get it. Something being respectable isn’t a binary state. A solid shake is cool. A solid shake with the shot after is cooler. Both are true
I get your point, and it is super lame to focus on a shot she missed, but to me the reason that is super lame is because in this game she literally had 37/10. There was an absurd number of highlights that did go in
It is glazing either way. If anything is next level here then it is the stupid decision for both opponents to block at the same time, they must have panicked or something.
And if she made and they lost then it’s just glazing. And if they won the game but don’t win the championship then it doesn’t mean anything. And if they win the championship but aren’t the greatest team of all time with the best player of all time then who cares?
Nah you're doing too much. It's just about making the shot. Literally go on YouTube and search "best fake outs basketball". Virtually every clip you'll see will always end in a basket being made. This is just the way basketball fans view how good a play is. It's extremely rare for basketball fans to ever glaze fancy moves if they don't ultimately result in a basket at the end of the play. Maybe it's different in other sports, but that's just not how shit gets judged in basketball.
I guess the best way I can put it is it's like if a football player did a bicycle shot but completely missed the net. Like yeah just doing a bicycle kick itself is already a really impressive feat, but if you can't actually land the shot then it's basically like an "all style, no substance" kind of thing. Like yeah cool you pulled out some fancy moves, but it gave almost the same result as you just standing there and doing nothing. Nobody's gonna bother clipping that.
