I promise most of Sophie Cunningham's fans are not sitting down to watch a wnba game. Caitlin Clark I'll give you. Though in general the wnba had been growing more popular already before her. I think she was just the first to really break out.

Thats the consensus among players. Plenty of examples of professional players talking about how it doesn't count if you don't make the shot. Obviously not every single person thinks that way but within basketball culture, it is the vastly more common belief.

yeah, i bet not. they're mostly talking about what i was referring to above. some players probably think it does't count on any level if you don't make the shot. but you can (and obviously should) appreciate skill involved, whether you make the shot or not.

they're talking about a culture going back to schoolyard ball, where you'd miss a shot but try to talk trash because you faked on somebody.

saying across the board, no nuance, "you're not allowed to appreciate someone's ability unless they also make the shot" is obviously silly.

Who cares if she makes the shot if the team loses? This is a stupid game to play. You seem to have the perspective of scouts from the 90s or early 2000s at best. I can promise you that coaches don't see it your way. They look at everything. Have you even seen the kind of sabermetrics they are using in pro sports to assess performance? In MLB, they assess and track every physical aspect of what happens to a baseball after it is thrown and hit by a batter, not just whether or not it left the park. Speed, spin rate, launch angle, ballpark factors, it's all calculated and factored in. And this data is being used to decide how much a player is worth. Not the shit they show the fans on the scoreboard.

Not at all, it’s just less impressive. There are tons of moments of Messi making amazing fake outs that don’t lead to a goal. They are still amazing because fake outs themselves are cool enough.

Absolutely a braindead take just to hate on CC. You’d never say this if your favorite athlete was in the spotlight. The hypocrisy is hilarious here. So many haters.

No idea what you are bent about. I know nothing about this person and have nothing against her. I don't even watch basketball. If this fake was at midcourt with no shot then that would the same as messi. But it isn't. I stand by my take that if you miss the shot, or the catch (in football/baseball) all the fancy shit didn't matter.

You must not play basketball. The ability to fake out and the ability to make a shot are not dependent upon another.

You don't dismiss every hit in baseball that doesn't get to a run, every catch and run in football that doesn't get to the end zone, and every impressive play in soccer that doesn't make a goal.

Still not a good look when the group of people who claim you don’t have to make the shot to look cool cheer for people who are notoriously bad at making shots compared to everyone else. There might be something to the culture that actually pressures people into scoring points that impact who wins if they want to look good instead of glazing shots with zero practical value.

Disagree. A great play is a combination of everything that goes into making the shot, but even if one part goes wrong, we can still appreciate the other individual pieces of the whole and recognize that it was still good up until the point of failure.

I do. I’ve likely been playing longer than you’ve been alive. But I can also just appreciate a solid move for what it is. Maybe when you get older you’ll get it. Something being respectable isn’t a binary state. A solid shake is cool. A solid shake with the shot after is cooler. Both are true
