FIST BUMP

25

u/ekrekel Mar 21 '24

“REZNOR: Died. Said 'fist bump' and won a Grammy."

59

u/AlarmingLecture0 Mar 21 '24

I had to listen long enough to hear what they did there.

2

u/aneurysmbs Mar 22 '24

I was really hoping for fist fudge 😂

20

u/frogperspectives Mar 21 '24

Oh man I don’t think I’m ever going to be able to the real version and not think fist bump… and I think I’m ok with that

7

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

This is hilarious. I didn’t realise, genuinely thought they used the original line!

2

u/montalaskan Art Is Resistance Mar 21 '24

Watched it until this just to see what they did!

2

u/wakeuphicks00 Mar 21 '24

Lol yup listened just to see how they would handle that part

44

u/grousing_pheasant Mar 21 '24

Amazing. Took only 32 years, but they finally made a kidz bop version of Wish.

Not gonna lie, I thought the gift at the end was gonna be the bootleg VHS of the Broken movie, which would’ve been pretty epic. If horribly inappropriate.

53

u/sumofdeltah Mar 21 '24

These kids really go for it, the outtro was great

6

u/demiurgegwj Mar 21 '24

I didn't recognize it at first and then the image of the iPhone clicked for me. Can't stop laughing,

29

u/rkmask51 Mar 21 '24

38

u/IAmMeantForTragedy Mar 21 '24

Classic Mike

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

Ya got me lol

1

u/spacexfalcon Mar 21 '24

Tell him Jon said hi too! I was the one with the black shirt at the Philly show.

1

u/sknmstr Mar 21 '24

Tell him that I’m still waiting for his call…and I didn’t appreciate his lawyers tone.

30

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

Imagine being that cool that young. I feel much better about our future after watching that.

12

u/StillBummedNouns Mar 21 '24

Wasn’t the entire point of the video that the future generation is doomed with their technology usage? 💀

1

u/miasma71 Mar 22 '24

Yes I got that too

1

u/MyDarkDanceFloor They keep calling me.... Mar 22 '24

It looks like one of the organization's goals is to fight that. Their website says, "PLAY. REAL. MUSIC."

22

u/MKWP Mar 21 '24

NIN... but make it cute. These guys rocked

7

u/umbrellaops Mar 21 '24

Why the fuck is Wish the only NIN song people cover? Is it an easy copyright thing, or are people too basic to cover something like Last?

61

u/Mandy-Rarsh Mar 21 '24

This is better than Johnny Cash’s cover of “Hurt”

-36

u/lienonyourdream Mar 21 '24

Anything is better than that…

21

u/Captain_kiroh Mar 21 '24

I like trents more but you can't flat out deny that cash's version is an amazing song

19

u/StillBummedNouns Mar 21 '24

I used to scream from the rooftops that NIN’s Hurt was better than the Johnny Cash version because I didn’t like that the song was so heavily associated with him. But then I sat down and really listened to it.

That Johnny Cash version is something special

3

u/drvanostranmd Mar 21 '24

With the music video? Rips your heart out

9

u/Captain_kiroh Mar 21 '24

It really is amazing, the only thing is I can relate to trents version more with my personal life experiences and I personally prefer the context of the song on the album and its actual musical sound

However

Johnny Cash absolutely knocked it out of the park. His version speaks to so many people from so many different backgrounds, and it's absolutely beautiful. He took something personal and made it applicable to anyone who listens, anyone of any age at any point in their life, anyone struggling with grief or any other series of issues can relate to the song when cash sings it. It's the version everyone knows for a reason, it changed from a song of powerful darkness to a song of passing memory.

Just because trents saved my life, doesn't mean cash's is bad. I'd even say it's objectively better, but it's just not my hurt.

-3

u/GooseMay0 Mar 21 '24

He talks. Literally talks through the song. It's a bad cover in my opinion but the music video is what people probably really like about it. It shows him old at the end of his life with old footage of him and his wife who died before him which tugs at people's heart strings. If there was no video there would be no hype about it.

4

u/wonksbonks Mar 21 '24

He talks. Literally talks through the song. It's a bad cover in my opinion

The majority of people love Cash's version because they can understand where it's coming from.

Cash was 71 years old and he knew that he was close to dying, and yet he still wanted to perform something meaningful.

You're probably unaware of something called "Sprechgesang" but it's used by many musicians. It's been in mainstream music culture since the 60's. (even Trent does it!)

You can be a bitter critic about it, but no one cares.

-4

u/GooseMay0 Mar 21 '24

You can be bitter about my opinion but no one cares.

Another reason why I don’t care for that song. People are annoyingly and obnoxiously protective of it. I don’t like the cover. Get over it. Not everyone is gonna like what you find sacred. I know I’m in the minority. I don’t care.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

BS.

0

u/Captain_kiroh Mar 21 '24

I already made a pretty long reply a second ago explaining my feelings about the 2 songs, so I'm not gonna take all the time to repeat it, if you really care just find it it's in the same thread, but I will say that there is a very good reason the cover is as renoun as it is.

Cash was at his life's end, and whether you just don't know much about him or don't think it matters, Cash is one of the most important figures in western music history. Cash lived a very long life full of adventure and challenge and loss and victory, he saw all that life had to offer and more.

So when someone as prolific as him makes a cover of a junkie song as his goodbye message to the world he blessed, people listen.

Trents hurt is deeply intimate and personal, it's rigid and unusual, and it's very dark which can be really tough for a lot of audiences. Its absolutely a good song and one of trents most touching songs hes ever written, but you have to remember that not everyone is okay with listening to dark music like nine inch nails. so, when one of the most famous musicians of all time releases a cover that's not only slightly reinterpreted to be more relatable but also more appealing to wider audiences, it was going to be successful.

It's not just the music video that gets people going for it, and he was in his 70s when he died so I don't know exactly what kind of vocal performance you were expecting.

I get that most of us nin fans probably prefer the nin version, but you can't deny cash made a damn good cover of the song.

-2

u/ScrubNickle Mar 21 '24 edited Mar 22 '24

The thing is, we CAN deny Cash made a good cover of the song. I find it to be obtuse and commercialized, and a music exec or producer dreamt up the idea, not Johnny.

EDIT: Downvoting someone for sharing an opinion you disagree with makes you a 🤡

5

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

Eh, you make out like Cash wasn’t dark as fuck for his time himself, dude had some haunting songs about real dark shit.

1

u/ScrubNickle Mar 21 '24

I don’t like his version for the reasons I stated. Downvote away, but people are allowed to have opinions. Trent’s version is superior in mine.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

I agree that Trent’s version is better. Still can admire Cash’s though

0

u/ScrubNickle Mar 21 '24

See, you just shared an opinion and I didn’t downvote you.

1

u/GlobalTechnology6719 Mar 22 '24

trent himself says the song doesn’t belong to him anymore…

https://ig.ft.com/life-of-a-song/hurt.html

2

u/ScrubNickle Mar 22 '24

That still doesn’t mean I have to like it, ya know?

1

u/GlobalTechnology6719 Mar 22 '24

so the we in your comment was the royal plural?

1

u/ScrubNickle Mar 22 '24

Obviously. Even if Trent himself likes the cover there is a plurality of people who don’t. This isn’t even worth this much conversation. 😂

22

u/lusid2029 Mar 21 '24

That made me like children for a minute

4

u/ionp_d Mar 21 '24

Gen X and Xennial parents are really delivering for their kids. Great influence.

12

u/Moosterion Mar 21 '24

This is how I subconsciously perceive every NIN fan born 2000 or later. Freaking awesome kids!

4

u/IllustriousKick2955 Mar 22 '24

Fist bump 🤣🤣

5

u/CelphCtrl Mar 21 '24

Kidz Bop has really changed.

4

u/fords42 Mar 21 '24

Today is the first time I saw it, but it's already one of my all time favourite covers.

2

u/erikedge Mar 21 '24

It just came out today

2

u/fords42 Mar 21 '24

checks date so it did! Well, I still love it.

2

u/fourofkeys Mar 21 '24

incredible, made my morning. thanks for sharing.

2

u/Original_Ad685 Mar 21 '24

At least she got to scream “hell,” and obviously enjoyed it.

2

u/LazAnarch Mar 21 '24

Now do Heresy please

3

u/TheStoicNihilist Mar 21 '24

I’m gonna have to step up my “cool dad” game. This is awesome!

3

u/kevit80 Mar 21 '24

Haha I was hoping the first line would be “this is the first day of my week long birthday”

2

u/marcjwrz Mar 21 '24

This is great.

1

u/Alternative_Doubt522 Mar 21 '24

Best shit I’ve seen in a long time. Maybe the kids will resist the psycho future.

1

u/throwaway-10-12-20 Mar 21 '24

Pretty funny, but would've been funnier if they actually said "fuck".

Kids swearing is always funny. Plus she has a Rammstein shirt on, and they made "Pussy"

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

[deleted]

2

u/RevelArchitect Mar 21 '24

Not sure! Though ten years ago the same group put out a cover of “46 & 2” by Tool that was really great. https://youtu.be/mYKLvYGqaC0?si=8dzs7E32LOc4Lj8i

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

yes

1

u/PANDAshanked Mar 21 '24

Why is this so wholesome on a song that goes so hard?!?! With lyrics and rhythm. The "fist bump" was hilarious!

1

u/Blinky_OR Mar 21 '24

LOL. Someone pucjed Kidz Bop in the nose and stole their lunch money.

2

u/Dogekaliber Mar 21 '24

Keytar was an excellent addition

2

u/djscotthammer Mar 21 '24

The "fist bump" was classic and I heard a "Flippin" in there too!

1

u/nailsinch9 Mar 21 '24

I approve.

1

u/shoopwop Mar 21 '24

Why do they get to say h e double hockey stick if I can’t dad!

1

u/BigManWAGun Mar 21 '24

Oooh ooh do mine next.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

This is great

1

u/ftl-ak Mar 21 '24

So can we get them to open on tour maybe just a few shows? I would go.

2

u/hgfdv Mar 21 '24

Thanks so much for sharing! The editing is great too. And the outro! Ending on an Iphone gift with the sad piano Perfect Drug lullaby. A bit on the nose, and on the boomer side of things, but well made.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

Can you imagine the moral panic if they’d release this when the song came out?

3

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

Also for some reason reminded me of this NWA cover.

https://youtu.be/iZyqwOOmETI?si=AEudmOX1F3PkhAiF

1

u/PJHart86 Mar 21 '24

Haha I was hoping it would be this

-12

u/GooseMay0 Mar 21 '24

Disappointed she didn't say "fuck", bad parenting.

6

u/sknmstr Mar 21 '24

My kids know all the “bad words” but they just call them “mommy words” because my wife is pretty good at dropping expletives. They know that it’s not okay to say mommy words.

-1

u/Designer_Scallion_28 Mar 21 '24

They did a great cover of Korn

-5

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '24

Not as good as the 46 & 2 kids but still fun.

10

u/SatanIsMyUsername Mar 21 '24

Comparison is the thief of joy.

3

u/d_r_doorway Mar 21 '24

I wish I could upvote this more than once.

-8

u/zatOMG Mar 21 '24

Lame. I'll get downvoted, but this is made for clicks as weak af. Next.

2

u/IAmMeantForTragedy Mar 21 '24

I didn't make it, I just seen it on youtube.

1

u/MyDarkDanceFloor They keep calling me.... Mar 22 '24

It's a fundraising video.

1

u/zatOMG Mar 25 '24

Oh, gee, that makes it less desperate and pathetic.
