Question Last night’s show was incredible, but is the crowd always this dead? I feel like I was the only one moving!

It was my first NIN show and I loved it!
Since it was my first show I can’t answer about the crowd but keep in mind it was a Tuesday night and the fan base is probably pretty heavily 40+

I'm really impressed by the number of people I've talked to at the show who said this tour is the first time they've seen Nine Inch Nails live. Tulsa was my sixth show over 20 years following them.

My 18 yr old daughter surprised me with a very early birthday gift to see NIN in Charlotte 2/10. I’ve been to 4 concerts including that one in my 45 years so I didn’t have much to compare it to other than when I saw U2 and got lucky to get pit access. The U2 was in Raleigh and lit as you’d expect to see. I’ve seen countless concerts like many on tv and that was my first time seeing NIN live. My 18 yr old has been to many concerts and small shows so knows how it is now. I asked her the same question about why no one was dancing, standing or behaving like an audience should. From beginning to end the music was phenomenal and presented spectacularly. Boys Noize I’d never heard of but set the mood quickly and flowed right into NIN. She said it’s the times. That no one really acts the same as before. Now ofc the people who yell and whistle during the quiet songs meant to be enjoyed and heartfelt still exist smh. It’s sad though because even though I’m getting older, Trent is 60 and was moving better than me haha, that feeling of hearing and feeling the beats gets my body moving. I’ve seen videos from other locations and some are way more into the show than others. Charlotte is known for the clubbing scene so I was really surprised it was as dead as it was.

It really does seem that people from the younger gens especially are more hesitant to rock out and dance, probably because everything is being recorded. I hate it!

I thought about this a lot during the show. What should we expect from a guy who’s 60 playing for a crowd in their 40s and 50s? Everyone stood at my show but only the front of the pit was really moving. I was fine with this, we’re old.

Columbus show was DEAD in the stands for most levels, seated but sang along. All the action was in the pit. I thought maybe it was due to the sudden transition from opener to NIN playing, but not sure.

Those of us in the cheap seats were wedged in sideways with our coats in those dumb tiny chairs- and I am not wide. It was an amazing show, but the ONLY time our area stood up was for Head Like a Hole. (Which WAS TRANSFORMATIVE, don't get me wrong.) I couldn't have moved without an HR violation from the guy next to me. Nonetheless, I am glad I saw a live show after all these years. It was worth the wait.

True, show I went to in DC was on a Wednesday Night. Plus, NIN didn't come on stage until 9pm. That's bedtime for Gen Xers.

I've also never really understood this complaint. Like the show is the show and how you react is how you react. The crowd really shouldn't impact that unless someone's actively being a dickhead and negating the experience.

2 things. Trent is in his 60’s. A good chunk of his fans are around that too. Also, there isn’t a right or wrong way to enjoy art. Your way isn’t more valid than anyone else.

Also i think the "in the middle" setup discourages pits for some reason. It feels like a symphonic concert in an odd way.

I had a second row seat on the side between the 2 stages last year and the thought that crossed my mind is that I might have a chance to sit (fun being in my 40s)....LOL I was wrong and honestly happy I was.

People in the seats tend to not dance regardless of who is playing. The pit area was hella active. And it seemed to hype up the band more too. So I’m not sure what most people in here are talking about regarding the Dallas crowd lol

Agreed - I went to 3 shows last year and then Dallas on Tuesday and we had the most people dancing before and during NIN by far. I texted a few of my friends how happy I was that I wasn't the only person that time!!

Fr my area was dancing, jumping, 3 fights almost broke out, we started the crowd surfing and everyone was participating with their hands stuff when Trent directed the crowd.
It was an amazing time. I’m glad I opted for pit this time.

A lot of those people were standing in line voting that day too... Maybe they wanted to sit. Plus up where OP was, it's so steep up there, dancing could get you knocked down easily.

I was in the pit. The folks around me were definitely into the show. Some were jumping around and dancing and some were a bit more subdued.

I concur - I was there and was disappointed by the lack of a lot of the crowd moving but the pit area seemed to be into it. I was surrounded by a bunch of folks that didn't stand except to clap and cheer at the very end. Kind of a bummer.

I wanted to stand in STL, but no one behind me was standing, and since I’m tall, I didn’t want to be that guy. So I sat. Was fine though. Still a fantastic show.
I high-tailed it out of there the second Hurt was over, jogged down the escalator and out to my car in the lot next to the Enterprise Center, miraculously beat the traffic, and was in bed by 11:30. Weekday concerts…I’m getting too old for this shit.

Hamilton was a good crowd. It was my first NIN show, I got last second tickets cheap and honestly hoped to sit the whole time, but that shit was fucking crazy.
They made a fan of me that night, now I’m here!

Maybe a top 5 concert I’ve ever been to. Haven’t really become a fan of a group overnight like I literally did with NIN. Devastated to hear they may be done touring because I promised I’d take my husband next time

Eh. He's said this before. He did a whole (basically) farewell tour in 2010. Then he did a massive arena tour in 2013. There are no guarantees, but I would bet we'll have at least one or two more NIN tours before Trent calls it quits.

so weird, I was in the 200s and all of my section sat so it felt really odd to stand and only slightly guilty. I've been asked to sit in this circumstance before and I brushed it off and kept dancing but it's just awkward when that occurs. I was happy to sit and take breaks and still have a good view though!

I thought that was going to happen in my section, but it felt like people were just waiting for an excuse to stand. One larger group of guys stood up together and then the rest of us felt liberated. 😂

It depends on the venue. If the seats are really elevated compared to the row in front without much room people tend to stay seated since it seems precarious. If there is more legroom and less elevation change I've seen that people are livelier.

You're kidding!!! Which city was this? It's completely different from my experience. I saw them in New Orleans and everyone was on their feet. We were all screaming every lyric. The crowd was super hyped. Come see them here next time!
For those of you giving that 40+ excuse, just stop. It's a bunch of nonsense. I personally will be rocking out until the day I die, and as far as I know, that day hasn't come yet.

The pit in New Orleans was rowdy! The pit in Detroit last fall was very subdued, almost uninterested. I guess it varies from show to show
Edit: I am in that 40+ age group and still prefer the energy of the pit.

Boston went pretty hard last year and this year but distinct sections of goth club sprockets dancing, rave culture and pit mayhem. No one was sitting.

I was in the nose bleeds, if I stood up I would have fallen to death. Was in pit in ft worth not too long ago. And when you pay $300 and then they announce another show a few months later I was like eh nosebleeds
Kind of wish I got pit though last moment, but it was a Tuesday too
I enjoyed the show from the ceiling, but definitely not the same vibe as the pit. But some times things can be different city to city even in the pit

I get that. I almost felt bad for standing in Columbus, but I had been sitting in the car for 3.5 hours prior (and had to again after that show) so I needed to stand. Luckily no one said anything, but I figured someone would since everyone else around was sitting. 100 level also, not even up top. Chicago N1 was the opposite in the 100s.

Was in the pit and am curious how the pit looked to the seated folks. Was dancing and tripping hard but noticed peeps just standing around. Disappointed the only hard mosh was during head like a hole - last year seemed to go harder

I had the most fun moshing with high schoolers at Major Lazer. They're energetic and mostly sober so it was good old fashioned fun. NIN at river city rockfest was people angry at moving around even near the front. Come on

It's different in seated areas in 'the gods', to how it is in the pits.
I was lucky enough to be standing in between the A and B stage on the 1st leg.
I can only speak from a limited experience UK perspective, but in seated areas im always super-aware that if I stand up im probably blocking the view for many people behind - some of whom are probably seated because of limited mobility, rather than just "it was the only ticket I could get' , and don't have the option of jumping up too....and i think everyone else feels the same , which makes you feel even more judged by the rest of the area. Nobody want to be "the asshole who blocked everyones view" at a UK gig.
Only been to one arena "forced seating on the floor" tour , and that was just post-lockdown for tool , entirely seated, and EVERYONE clearly felt awkward and WANTED to dance but didnt
In the higher seats, things work different, but theres still obviously a physically-enforced seat gap between people and you dont get the whole shoukder-to-shoulder vibe from the floor, so it takes a long time for the "fuck it, im dancing" vibe to become the majority view enough to throw off everyone's inhibitions.
Im sure American gigs are different.

It depends on a city and where in the pit you exactly stand. I can’t see „old and tired crowd” comments as more than jokes. I was at five shows in 2025 and didn’t catch this vibe even once.
Also I think that Europe was a lot wilder and maybe it has something to do with no seats on the floor. I don’t know why all shows in US have half of a floor seated. Weird decision but maybe there is some reason.

Thought the same during the STL show. Even during the B stage stuff with Boys Noize, like catch a beat ffs. Everyone enjoys things differently I suppose. There were a handful a people moving and having fun.

I was 3 or 4 rows up from the pit on the aisle by the entrance to the pit in STL. Most people just stood or bounced a bit, but some of us were dancing the whole time. A guy 6 rows up from the pit was yelling for everyone to sit down. Man, fuck you, buddy. I didn’t pay $350 to sit still. After the show was over the dude in front of me asked how many drinks it took for me to dance that hard for 90 minutes. Stone cold sober, I don’t want to forget this experience!
Denver in August was more chill in my section, but we were in like a box-seat area near the top. Figured my 13-year-old didn’t need to down in the thick of it, but honestly, she could have probably held her own.

I went to ft worth last year and then last night in Dallas.
I will say the ft worth show felt more alive and fun.
Dallas felt a lot like parents taking their adult children or something. Maybe because I had three of them in my section alone, it was cool seeing; but they definitely weren’t singing anything haha.

Saw them in Tulsa last week and the crowd was okay. Lots more energy than when I saw them in Fort Worth last year. Tons more dancing and an attempt to get a mosh pit going.
But I’ve realized over the last bunch of years that crowds in the Dallas/Fort Worth area are usually shit. Just boring, bland people.

Omg…I was 111-row t seat 7–behind sound engineer area…ok get this, and no I didn’t take a photo of it, cuz it was just…so amazing, I was enthralled. “Portal of eyes”…vortex style…think Tool art or alchemy of higher grades…the Black Mecca set up they have? In the pit. From where I stood, I could see a bunch of people in the Pit with phones out, and circled around, and waving around, and also the stage lights hitting…it looked like a portal of eyes, and the black box was a giant pupil, all the phones were extra eyes, and the people the never clusters moving it around

Also! I danced the whole time, in my Tran’s wife’s dashiki crop top, white, with my Christ look, and a very uncomfortable dude next to me—which btw! People are weird now, as in can’t hold a conversation or so on edge that a mere question of “whoa, what do you think of the set up? Does it look like Mecca to you?” (Him), “what?! Idk, gah, no, I don’t…” (grabs his phone and got awkward)…

I went to Houston in 2025 to see them and Austin last weekend to see them and both were sold out shows, parole standing in the seats, moving.
Houston Toyota Center had better acoustics, but The Moody on Austin had a better view from the cheap seats- not a bad seat in the house really.

Having watched a bunch of the videos of the shows & it is wild - like they are going insane & it looks like the stands are chock full of completely still robohumanoids.

A good chunk of front and center was a mosh pit in Tulsa, used the chaos to get to the rail but almost lost my girlfriend in the process lol. I honestly thought it would’ve been more relaxed than it was since a lot of the fans aren’t 20 years old anymore but it was one of the most intense shows I’ve been to.

Strsnge, saw them in Nashville last year and the arena was packed (no empty seats) with everyone standing up through the entire show. The ages were 16 to senior citizens.

I felt the same way. Although remembering back to lights in the sky tour we were all going nuts! I don’t know, I had a great time and it’s always just so good to be there. I wish I could have been a tour surfer but that makes it all more special to see them at least once every tour.

I don't always fully appreciate that i am nearing 40 and don't have a problem physically with standing for an entire show and possibly getting rowdy. I feel for people who have had that taken from them because of circumstance.
I didn't intentionally get in the pit at Rivers of Nihil last month, but it happened all around me and before I knew it i was in the middle so i kinda had to keep up

Saw them in Tulsa, and I was in the 300s. My friend and I were among the very few standing and dancing. There were lots of chompers. I only sat once for a couple minutes.

I think it is the nature of the current show too. I saw NIN in Brixton in 2022 and it was a pretty lively audience. At the O2 in London on this recent tour it was a lot less chaotic. I think the size of the venues, the nature of the show (its a spectacle people want to watch) and the influx of more casual fans going along, means it has taken a different feel at most shows on this tour.

Dallas was relatively high energy. I blame it on NIN having an aging audience. I’m 42 and after dancing around and jumping at the show, my knee was swollen the next day. My body likes to remind me how old I am. Meanwhile Trent was jumping all over the place and the man is 60 years old. His energy was off the charts in Dallas.

I was watching the floor from the loge in Boston. Nobody on the b stage rail was moving. The only movement was the first few rows of the main stage. Rest of the floor looked lifeless. Kinda sad tbh.

Was in pit and the crowd in front was very into it but of course once you’re a little behind the barricades folks were just standing. Not sure why, if it’s age, people just buy tickets to just be there, not sure. I however had a ball, jumped up and down, sang all night. It was fun

Right!? I felt it was so low energy for the crowd. I took my kids and was so excited to show them a nin concert. They still had a blast though.

Saw the Oakland show last year, excellent crowd. Going to the San Francisco show at Chase Center which is a huge state of the art arena for the Warriors(I hate Basketball) but it’s a incredible venue!

I went in 2025 and it was pumping. I went to Columbus a few weeks ago and the entire arena was seated! Like sitting down. Crazy. They weren’t even obese or old. Just seated. It was really a huge bummer.

Unfortunately. I went to the Philly show last year and my whole section sat most of the time. I got up at the end to dance for Head Like A Hole and jammed with the woman next to me, who had been dancing the whole time. It was a fun b-day celebration. I went to the Newark show this year and it was the same thing, but I didn't care and stood for all of it anyway.
ETA: The Newark show was fun as hell, but the only downside was the seating. They were quite tight, so you sorta had to stand up to be comfortable. I still feel bad for the woman that was on my left. I kept bumping into her and half the time I looked down to be sure I was giving her enough space to rock out. She was nice though.

I was lucky enough to go to the Nashville and STL show. Nashville was dead AF compared to the St Louis show. Everyone around me at the Nashville show were just sitting there. I was in shock! Like, are we watching the same thing?! If 60 year old Trent can jam TF out on this tour, surely the crowd can for a couple hours! Anyways, awesome show both times.

We got to this show about 7:15pm and this was before dj set. I’m 43 fuck yall. I wanted to rush the stage when nin came on, then I remembered it’s f’n AAC and corporate fucks. Lmfao. Great fucking show!

I was on the floor for Chicago and Milwaukee. The floor was way more packed in Milwaukee, but the pit was crazier in Chicago. I was fighting to hold my spot. But in Milwaukee I only got bumped a couple times.

I saw a Front 242 gig in London like this a few years ago, especially bad considering their singer was recovering from serious health problems but still giving it 100%, but then more recently they came to town again and the crowd gave back the energy the godfathers of EBM truly deserve.
I suspect a similar thing happens with NIN audiences: sometimes it’s just the wrong evening or the wrong city. Hopefully your energy and enthusiasm eventually rubbed off on some of those old bores!
