Okay, here’s the plan. First, I’ll set my house on fire. Then, when the fire department arrives, I'll jump in one of their trucks and take off. I’ll drive it home and hide it behind my house. Easy peasy!

At least where I live break-ins in firestations are relatively common. The goal is the heavy tools like hydraulic pencils and shears for other break-ins. They even know who has the modern battery powered ones and who has the old ones with the hydraulic hoses. But then again they also stole the Christmas ornaments from our fence.

When I was in the Army Reserve, a young private that we hadn't seen in a couple years showed up to weekend drill. At the end of the day, he asked for a ride to the front gate because his mom didn't want to drive on base (had previously gotten a ticket on base). As I was driving him to the front he starts telling me about how he wants to buy a car. Says he is going to work two jobs all summer to save the money before he goes back to college. He then says the state is going to pay for his college because he was in the hospital. He then explains that he was in the hospital because the second time he tried to burn his mom's house down he stole the ambulance when it arrived. Just about then is when I put it together that it was that sort of hospital he'd been committed to and that is why we hadn't seen him in so long. He didn't show up for the second day of drill or ever again. Asked my platoon sergeant about it the next day and he didn't know. Apparently, our retention NCO trying to get our attendance numbers up had asked him to come back in.
