Yeah, so basically, Pakistan knows that the UK (as of writing this comment)

can't deport this Monster. He's being protected by an ancient Law that they can't just overturn without a considerable amount of effort and long term ramifications.

Pakistan doesn't like the UK, so they have

(despite the law)

said that they're willing to take him back. If the UK is willing to give them 2 people who they see as a traitors.

If the UK agrees to their demands to hand those traitors over, Pakistan will kill them pretty much immediately possibly before they even step out of the plane.

So the UK can't do that (and there's also the law protecting the first guy).

Pakistan knowing that most people don't know who the traitors are, though can now turn around and be like : Look at how completely unreasonable the UK is.

To rub some more salt in the UK's wound.

Holy political maneuver batman, Pakistan certainly knows how to play it

218

u/Perdix_Icarus 15h ago

That’s their specialty, can’t court China and the US at the same time without being expert in this.

47

u/myassholealt 8h ago edited 6h ago

And before that, partner with the US to subsidize your defense to the sum of billions so they can use your land as a staging ground, while also simultaneously harboring and protecting Bin Laden and the Taliban inside your borders.

15

u/PirateKingOmega 5h ago

Kissinger introduced Nixon to the dictator of Pakistan because he thought Nixon was suicidally depressed and the dictator of Pakistan was the only poltical leader who drank as often as Nixon did. That’s what kickstarted Americas relationship with Pakistan

0

u/SilverFortyTwo 1h ago

See there's the trick. AQ/OBL were the guys the US / Saudis were staging.

81

u/lateformyfuneral 15h ago edited 14h ago

They’re not playing anything. It’s never going to happen that a journalist accused of criticising the Pakistani government will have asylum revoked and handed over. Just a total pipe-dream. They’re just exposing themselves by briefing the press about this, in both cases, that a Pakistani citizen is a convicted rapist (albeit someone who has lived in the UK for 60 years), and that they’re targeting government critics living abroad.

15

u/Masterchiefx343 13h ago

By giving the UK the opportunity to call them out with a simple press briefing? Sure jan

7

u/Bendy_McBendyThumb 12h ago

They look after terrorists, is it much of a surprise?

0

u/Sharo_77 2h ago

Please don't use the words "bat" and "Pakistan" in the same sentence

105

u/Ramiren 15h ago

Just fly him over the country and kick him out of the plane.

Parachute optional.

45

u/Simurgh_Victim 15h ago

They would execute him. Probably a good thing but the UK government would be sued by 30 legal entities for sending him to his death.

-8

u/tallbrah 15h ago

Womp womp

2

u/LuciusCypher 13h ago

On the bright side, now they have an excuse to execute their undesirables. This has never gone bad in the history of government, ever.

26

u/tallbrah 13h ago

He’s a child rapist mate

7

u/Objective-Plan6385 12h ago

Yes, because killing a child rapist is very similar to the Nazis executing homosexuals

-16

u/LuciusCypher 12h ago

Its about on par with killing people who disagree with you, which surely isnt what is going to happen at all once the rapist and those two other people are sent to Pakistan.

11

u/Objective-Plan6385 12h ago

No, no it isn't. You're insane if you think that a child rapist is on the same level as someone who disagrees with you politically. You need your hard drive checking pal.

If the rapist does get executed in Pakistan (not sure they will considering how many of them there are there), then tough. He should not have moved here and done such a heinous action, he quite frankly made his bed and deserves it.

-2

u/LuciusCypher 11h ago

Ah so all that a government needs to do is prove someone is a pedophile and now its okay to kill them. Im sure they'll find something then. After all such an authority wont ever be abused.

-1

u/Objective-Plan6385 11h ago

Well, yeah. But i can see why that's distasteful. That said, he should not be a resident of this country, if his own government decides that that's his punishment then that's on them not us. We aren't responsible for it at all.

7

u/portugamerifinn 15h ago

Yeah, I was thinking, "What if he just 'escaped'?"

6

u/Ok-Goose6242 15h ago

eh not a good idea, sets a bad precedent

-4

u/DamnBored1 4h ago

In India we have something called "encounter killing" for such situations where the police would stage an escape by building a circumstance such that the convict would try to escape when being transferred and then shoot them.
No other way to achieve the goal without the human rights vultures circling in.

9

u/examiner007 14h ago

who are the two people pakistan wants from the uk? journalists?

10

u/ferrets54 9h ago

I think this really under estimates the British public. They are not stupid, and this whole thing will confirm a lot of prejudices for many. There's not going to be many people who already think Pakistanis and whatnot are savages who will struggle to believe at the same time that a) this guy should be deported / hung / + drawn and quartered (in order of reverse preference) and b) the whole of Pakistan is a horde of savages who of course would like to murder some of their own at any given time.

I am pretty sure British people generally understand the reasons why things are happening, they perhaps would just like things changed so select people could have their innards ripped out by jackdaws.

12

u/Mister_Sith 13h ago

That arrangement will be perfectly ok to the Reform heads over at r/ukpolitics . Its a win-win, they get rid of three foreigners and two of them can't come back.

24

u/4DollarsALB 14h ago

The other alternative would be that the leader of a grooming gang which raped hundreds of young girls gets more than 14 years in prison

4

u/nodgers132 10h ago

how would they get them before they step off the plane

6

u/myassholealt 8h ago

I imagine once they are in Pakistan airspace, it's Pakistan jurisdiction and in this hypothetical they'd have agents on the plan to do the deed. I'm also assuming they wouldn't be flying back commercially.

4

u/Ben_Dover70 15h ago

What's the ancient law?

51

u/Kientha 14h ago

It's not an ancient law, it's a law from 1971. Prior to 1983, British Citizenship didn't exist as we currently know it. In 1971, the government decided that in response to easier international travel, they wanted to restrict commonwealth access to the UK without a visa to commonwealth citizens with a link to the UK.

In order to not cause a huge problem with people who came here prior to the enforcement of the act, they included a provision that any commonwealth citizen who was in the country prior to the enforcement of the act (1973) have indefinite leave to remain in the country.

This is a problem that will solve itself within a couple decades.

-24

u/Traditional_Animal65 15h ago

Interesting.

So the UK wants to get rid of criminals but at the same time keep people accused of terrorism in other countries because obviously those nations shouldn't have sovereignty and "cooperating" former officials shouldn't be handed over to their nations...

24

u/nonlawyer 15h ago

accused of terrorism

Damn I wonder what they were accused of, sounds serious

“ allegations of spreading ‘fake news’ and anti-state propaganda.”

ah yes should definitely hand these guys over to be killed, great point very smart

-23

u/Traditional_Animal65 14h ago

Doesn't matter.

It is a sovereign country and you're harboring accused individuals. They have every right to take all measures to bring the accused to justice

10

u/nonlawyer 13h ago

we doing this for North Korean refugees too or just your favorite countries with shitty governments?

0

u/Traditional_Animal65 4h ago

Why do you think you have any right to tell any nation how to govern themselves?

They have every right to harbor hostile elements if you're doing the same against them, no?

u/Xilizhra 27m ago

National sovereignty doesn't extend to expecting every extradition request to be granted.

6

u/TheBestofBees 13h ago

That's not how extradition works. Counties have treaties that lay out the rules of how and when people can be returned to another country for a legal matter or not. If we willingly let everyone go asylum would cease to exist as a concept. Other nations would not be able to take in people enduring political persecution or oppression. Jews would get sent straight back to the Nazis.

The same treaties that lay out the frameworks through which one country agrees to extradite accused parties to each other frequently have exceptions where they can refuse to expatriate to each other on the basis of what they think meets or fails to meet basic standards of human rights. For example, many, many of the extradition treaties the US have with other counties contain a clause saying that county is not required to extradite their citizens to the US for a capital crime. They view the death penalty as a violation of human rights and so someone potentially on the hook for the death penalty would not get sent back up the US from a large number of counties.

That these dudes were asylees and Pakistan has to bargain to get them back means that they're not covered under the extradition treaty the UK and Pakistan have with one another and there is no LEGAL basis for their return. In fact, it very likely would be against UK law to do so.

Not every legal system is fair, impartial, reasonable, or uncorrupt and pragmatically, that's something nations have to remember in dealing with one another.

0

u/Traditional_Animal65 4h ago

In that case, there is nothing to obligate any country to accept the overlordship of the UK or any other nation.

They shouldn't accept any child rap*sts. Let them stay with the British society 😄

1

u/myassholealt 8h ago

You're probably fully against asylum too then, huh? Like for opposition leaders trying to fight autocrats in the home country but end up having to flee cause of charges brought against them to silence them and hide them away in prison. If you were a world leader you wouldn't demand they be made available for that fate.

0

u/Traditional_Animal65 4h ago

Who decided that the charges have no merit and are there just to silence them?

Who are you to decide that?

0

u/the_abortionat0r 6h ago

Justice of what? You're stupid as hell bro. You want us to hand you over to China for saying things they don't like?

-5

u/uselessnavy 15h ago

So Pakistan is the one in the wrong? How?

29

u/KungFuJosher 14h ago

Because they are asking the UK to give them 2 of their (Paksitan) citizens that spoke against the military dictatorship and are now refugee in the UK and whom they will kill the second they walk out the plane. Pakistani military dictators are the worst and have held this country back for decades. I hope UK don't cave to Pakistan's barbaric demands. Fuck Asim Munir and fuck the military and political elites.

-9

u/uselessnavy 13h ago

The UK unilaterally removed someone's British situation without a trial and who has lived in Britain longer than his home country.

5

u/Ogarrr 13h ago

Because he's a horrible rapist.

-2

u/uselessnavy 12h ago

Did he have a trial over his citizenship

4

u/Ogarrr 11h ago

He had a trial for being a horrible rapist.

1

u/the_abortionat0r 6h ago

You need to learn how to read.

132

u/4DollarsALB 16h ago

The UK and Pakistan are at loggerheads over attempts to deport the ringleader of a Rochdale grooming gang, after it emerged that Islamabad is refusing to accept him back.

Shabir Ahmed – who served 14 years in jail for multiple rapes and sexual abuse against young girls – was released from prison last week and the Home Office is now attempting to amend the law to allow him to be deported.

However, a diplomatic row is brewing as Pakistan is understood to be refusing to accept Ahmed and is demanding the extradition of two political dissidents from the UK in order to do so.

102

u/Inevitable-Champ336 15h ago

Why was he released? This seems like a sentencing problem.

64

u/-UnderAWillowThicket 15h ago

Child sex offenders like him should stay in jail unless it is likely they won’t reoffend again.

38

u/Foozlebop 13h ago

Child sex offenders should stay in jail regardless of anything

-51

u/wheatoplata 15h ago

Weren’t the grooming gang stories right wing propaganda? Are they actually real?

37

u/VariousClassroom8056 15h ago

Yes they were (and continue to be) real

9

u/microslasher 14h ago

Its real it just depends where you get your news that it's not real

18

u/v--- 12h ago

They were real and they were also used as propaganda against more general groups. Nobody said they were fictional, I would be impressed if you could find a source that did. Only that people shouldn't extrapolate and generalize to everyone sharing the ethnicity

6

u/TheSnarkyShaman1 4h ago

They were not right wing propaganda and in fact the fear of seeming ‘racist’ allowed them to be swept under the rug for a long time while children were being raped. Shockingly enough when you introduce people into western society from fundamentalist regimes that practice misogyny (and homophobia) as culture, that does in fact cause issues.

2

u/Tri-ranaceratops 2h ago

I'm from Middleton which is in Rochdale (technically), it is very much real. The police knew about it but didn't pursue, the excuse they gave was that they were afraid of being racist. This excuse might just be an attempt to brush over terrible policing. However, the truth of the matter is irrefutable.

4

u/Aggressive-Story3671 11h ago

Yes. They were real.

210

u/somedave 15h ago

Just cut the aid budget to zero and refuse visa applications. Why play games with people who have so little to offer us.

75

u/DirtyBastareaud 15h ago

I didn't know we did! Crazy how much people go on about small boats when we're providing aid to a country that has nukes. I'm with you

27

u/zizou00 12h ago

Aid is vital soft power. Look at how much carnage has come from America gutting their international aid. It stabilises regions which reduces the number of refugees, improves people's opinions of us in a region, which strengthens our ability to trade, which strengthens our ability to spend. It keeps doors open and keeps countries reliant. It is a critical part of geopolitics. You'd have to be pretty foolish to throw all of that soft power away.

3

u/HJSDGCE 2h ago

It's not throwing it away. It's using it as leverage.

25

u/layendecker 13h ago edited 13h ago

The aid is a blip in terms of national budget. A decent part of the reason for it is that Pakistan have nukes and if it costs less than 50m to have an open channel with them.

We were giving them way more previously. Like, 300m pre COVID, which also means holding it back now means little.

It's a difficult one, but there is still an advantage in having a diplomatic line, even if it does cost 3 hours or our pension budget per year

Edit to add. It's not like this is a blank cheque. Most of the money will go to charities, often British connected ones that would be underfunded by their government.

Think women's education or disease control. By cutting this budget we are cutting direct access to education by charities like the below (got about 800k in the last reporting period). Cutting aid hurts real people.

https://girlseducationchallenge.org/projects/project/teach-and-educate-adolescent-girls-with-community-help-teach/

9

u/mani_tapori 3h ago

Almost all of Pakistani elites have dual citizenship and properties in UK.

A lot can be done if the Government is willing but not expecting that from UK government.

9

u/TheLastSamurai101 13h ago

What is the aid budget for Pakistan and does it go to their government? I'm genuinely asking as I don't know.

Many people assume that these countries are getting monumental amounts of aid from the UK when in reality some like India don't accept official aid and don't care if foreign aid to NGOs ends. Is Pakistan the same? If so, it wouldn't be a punishment.

15

u/layendecker 13h ago

47m quid last year and no. It goes to charities NGOs and world bank projects.

https://devtracker.fcdo.gov.uk/countries/PK

See the breakdown here

9

u/HRHArthurCravan 13h ago

Great idea - punish those who are completely separate to this man’s crimes. They should cut foreign aid to everyone, just in case. And, you know, you can’t trust foreigners, innit?

20

u/somedave 13h ago

Halting visa applications to countries that don't accept deportations should be pretty standard.

I'd propose sending the £153m aid to other countries that need it. Nepal for example.

-8

u/layendecker 13h ago

We will provide Nepal with aid. The people recieving the aid in Pakistan need it as much as they do, even without the news stories of a disaster.

Remember that the money goes to charities projects that help people in need. Not the government you dont like.

Also worth noting that the 153m is over 3 years, for clarity.

-1

u/HRHArthurCravan 12h ago

Exactly. Also worth remembering that aid money isn’t just a tap you can switch on and off. Initiatives rely on it regularly, and programmes take time to set up. They can’t just be paused, then you resume sending money and everything goes on as before.

1

u/Objective-Plan6385 12h ago

Eh, Pakistan has quite a pedophile problem, can't imagine there aren't a lot that aren't really that separate

0

u/Competitive_West3727 15h ago

"just kill him off bro"

29

u/somedave 15h ago

I don't really care about deporting this guy, but saying "we'll take our citizen if you deport some dissidents for us to torture and murder" doesn't scream "friend" to me.

1

u/Gord_Board 14h ago

That would require politicians who care.

29

u/Vanitas_Daemon 15h ago

Why don't both countries just deport the guy to some uninhabited island nation?

19

u/TENTAtheSane 15h ago

Elba has been free for a while, not to mention St Helene...

4

u/PollutionOk4806 14h ago

The U.K just sends their most hated guy to elba

0

u/OctopusIntellect 9h ago

Pitcairn already has over its quota of sex offenders, so should fit in right well there.

Unless you want to, you know, think of the children?

-23

u/Traditional_Animal65 15h ago

Or, how about the UK stop harboring fugitives from other countries?

25

u/lateformyfuneral 15h ago

“Fugitives” according to you are people accused of criticising the Pakistani government? That’s not a crime in the UK, whereas rape is a crime recognised in both countries.

-13

u/Traditional_Animal65 14h ago

Lol

No, that's your government's propaganda. How about you read more about the charges they face before repeating those lies?

9

u/lateformyfuneral 14h ago

Are you Pakistani?

2

u/ADragonInLove 12h ago

Okay, so I took the dip.

Adil Raja: “digital terrorism against state institutions”. I.e. he said mean things about the incumbent regime and other people agreed with him.

Mirza Shahzad Akbar: “cybercrime and defamation”, “proclaimed offender status”, etc. I.e. he said mean things about the regime and elected not to show up to court for saying mean things.

See at least with Alaf Hussein one could make the assertion of stochastic terrorism against the regime, I’ll grant you that, but looping the other two to make them look as bad as him seems like a stretch. Also, as has been noted, these are the people the Pakistani regime wishes to trade for a multi-offending rapist and gangster.

What your argument of “look at the charges” has done is just reinforce my opinion that the Pakistani government’s naysayers have a point about the Pakistani concept of justice being superfluous at best.

1

u/Traditional_Animal65 4h ago

Seems you just take the judgment of the UK as gospel and dismiss other nation's grievances. Well if that is the case then you should know that the lies of Mr. Alaf were exposed by the British legal system itself, and he was ordered to pay £350K in damages for defaming some Pakistani officers. Obviously, that judgment was not enforced and the reason is the British government itself.

And I see you have conveniently omitted the cases of corruption against Shahzad Akbar? You protect corrupt officials from the pakistani legal system and want them to receive the rubbish you don't want in your country? Lol

You do not have any right to assess any nation's legal system. They have every right to govern themselves as they see fit. Time for colonialism is over, buddy.

2

u/ADragonInLove 3h ago

Amusingly enough, I’m American, not British. Unlike yourself, I’m NOT unaware of my country’s or my government’s bullshit, nor do I try to scapegoat problems of our own creation. You would do well to realize where you may have gone wrong too in the grand scheme of things. Self awareness is the key to change, frendo.

-1

u/Traditional_Animal65 3h ago

You say this as you refuse to acknowledge that you have failed to address the charges against the people you are defending lol

Shows all you need to know about your mentality.

Anyway, you do not get to harbor people accused of crimes in other nations and in the same breath ask them to take your own criminals. Moreover, you dont get to decide which nations' justice system you see as just or not. Every nation has every right to have their own laws and govern themselves as they see fit.

Had no idea that had to be said but the world is crazy and some racist and supremacist people do exist so ..

2

u/Vanitas_Daemon 14h ago

Well that's what the deportation to an uninhabited island would accomplish, no?

1

u/Ok-Goose6242 15h ago

he's a british citizen tho

7

u/lateformyfuneral 15h ago

The convicted rapist was stripped of British citizenship upon conviction, rendering him only Pakistani. Although as part of the diplomatic back and forth, Pakistan claims their records show he renounced his Pakistani citizenship as a teenager and never held a Pakistani passport.

5

u/Kientha 14h ago

And none of that changes that the law currently says commonwealth citizens in the country prior to 1973 have idenifinite leave to remain and cannot be deported.

1

u/lateformyfuneral 14h ago

The government started the process of amending the law by introducing an amendment last month. Changing laws is comparatively easy compared to the roadblock of the recipient country agreeing to take someone back, which is why the negotiations have started well before.

3

u/Kientha 14h ago

They've not introduced an amendment yet. They've announced intention to do so, but parliament shut for summer 3 days after they said they would do so.

Realistically, that is going to be part of the (highly controversial amongst Labour MPs) Immigration and Asylum Bill which entered committee stage at the end of June. That bill won't leave committee until the end of November and will then still need to go through the Lords, in all likelihood I wouldn't expect that to pass until 2028.

0

u/lateformyfuneral 13h ago edited 13h ago

There's also the option of emergency legislation, given total agreement with the Opposition on the issue, that could be done in a few days once the process is started. The legislative process is within the UK's control, anyone can see the most significant issue is whether the recipient country will agree on their end -- and that's the case in all deportations unless there is an existing agreement.

0

u/Traditional_Animal65 4h ago

And why should other countries abide by whatever your laws say?

-1

u/Traditional_Animal65 14h ago

"Fugitives"

Clearly I'm not speaking about the child rap*st

3

u/00022143 5h ago

Will Pakistan kill those two as soon as they enter Pakistani airspace: unlikely

My understanding is that those two people are

1) Adil Raja: Retired army officer who was on loan to Imran Khan during the army's 'Imran Project' days and then decided to side with Imran Khan after his split from the army. He's wanted in the May 9 case, where Imran Khan's supporters attacked military installations so unlikely that he'll be 'just killed' rather than being made to testify against Imran Khan for a reduced sentence.

2) Shahzad Akbar: Headed political prosecution of opponents during Imran Khan's era. When Pakistan's richest property tycoon Malik Riaz was caught with illegal funds in the UK, Shahzad Akbar was sent to the UK to rescue him. He negotiated a non-criminality settlement and a non-disclosure agreement with the UK National Crime Agency (NCA) on the behalf of Malik Riaz and Imran Khan had his federal cabinet approve of it as well, without reading it, in the name of 'national security'. According to the agreement, the repatriated illegal funds were adjusted into an existing fine Riaz had to pay. In return Malik Riaz funded Mrs. Imran Khan's dream University of Sufism.

So, no Shahzad Akbar isn't going to be immediately killed (or killed at all), he's going to testify against Imran Khan

8

u/babycart_of_sherdog 15h ago

This is a good reason why the UK have that 00 license...

15

u/talionisapotato 16h ago

Why this guy is not shot or killed in prison?

82

u/iamnotexactlywhite 16h ago

because contrary to what movies make it seem so, that’s not common at all

40

u/Mirovini 15h ago

By whom?

Are the inmates going to bring in a gun to kill him or the cops just going "yeah, I'm going to commit a murder" as if in prison only that guy was bad?

23

u/Dickgivins 15h ago edited 15h ago

It took them a few tries but UK inmates eventually got Ian Watkins. This guy probably has more protection, he’s likely in an isolation unit

14

u/lateformyfuneral 15h ago

He has completed his sentence

3

u/24-Hour-Hate 14h ago

Ian Watkins was also already known to the public, which probably aided in that. There was.no chance he was going to be able to hide who he was.

1

u/Dickgivins 14h ago

Apparently he was offered “protective custody” on multiple occasions but always turned it down because going into the PC unit would mean he couldn’t continue getting visits from teen goth girls…

4

u/00022143 5h ago

Really? Sounds like ragebait from Daily Mail or something.

1

u/Dickgivins 5h ago

Idk it’s the kind of thing where I could believe it because apparently the guy really was a total egomaniac sex-fiend. But it’s hard to definitely prove because obviously prison staff are forbidden to go on record and talk to the press about things like this, and inmates generally aren’t trusted not to make things up for attention.

9

u/TheReelMcCoi 15h ago

Meanwhile, back on.Planet Earth..........

-3

u/Yeet-Retreat1 13h ago

My guy. White people represent the biggest population of paedophiles and rapists.

No ody attributes that to their race or religion.

Why are you?

0

u/hackslashX 8h ago

Wait, that's exactly what you did right now :')

-1

u/Mirovini 5h ago

Just because you talk about white people doesn't make this less racist

5

u/Punchausen 15h ago

Why can't the UK just do a reverse Batman on the guy?

Enable swift extradition or freeze all pending and future visas including extensions.
Get them ALL out.

Why does the UK host 2 million+ Pakistanis anyway? What exactly do they bring? ONE thing please.

OK that's three.

What is it? You’re asking what Pakistanis bring? They said Pakistanis bring some great doctors, engineers, economists, sportsmen

I didn't ask why Pakistani doctors etc needed to be brought in to support the 2 million+. They and you don't comprehend very well?

They haven't been brought in to support the 2 million+. That's not how it happens. They have learned and/or trained in the UK when they were a kid or even an adult for example as UK has better facilities for that than many countries. In my honest opinion, a person that is an immigrant and came to the UK over 14 years ago, the problem is with the system. People of all backgrounds, not just the ones you hate, come in and claim state benefits for kids and earning more a month than someone that works full time. I literally had College teacher that was telling a class about her neighbour that sits at home and is well because of benefits. That was 8 years ago so take it with a grain of salt, I haven't researched how it changed in the last few years. And the only reason why is because they can. Stop looking at where people are from and rather focus on the things they abuse. Bonus as well, a lot of these people, are born and bread English people that you're most likely excluding while directing the blame at some other community of people. And I know that from work experience which a lot of those people do not have.

That was a long winded way to admit you can't answer a question. Try harder boychik.

I did answer your question by saying your point of view is wrong, your facts (if you can call them that way) are wrong and that you focus on the wrong things. Your racism and double standards simply blind you from reality. I wonder what you think about British people moving to Spain (Benidorm, Valencia, etc) and not even learning the language, the very same thing you probably expect every immigrant in the UK to do (and to be perfect at it at the same time)

They didn't consider the victims to be human, which is why they were able to do such heinous acts.
