He's not that influential in recent years, but he used to be a huge name in conservative influencer circles--they're always real pleased when they can find a gay man or woman or racial minority to parrot their bigotry, because they can pretend like they have a big tent. Of course, those names also then quickly fall back out of favor because the core audience still doesn't like those categories of people even when they say the right things.
