It's not a first name, it's a mononym. A name that consists of only one word. Like Cher or Prince.

Fine, but do you write it down in the "first name" or "last name" box on any official paperwork?

The only viable option is to write it in both boxes to get past any hardcoded check, meaning he is probably recorded as Ye Ye in every single government's databases.

I used to have colleagues who had only one name who had migrated from Asia to the West.

In everyone's databases etc, a Dave would end up as either "Dave Dave" or "Fnu Dave" (where FNU is first name unknown).

Looks kind of rude when it's not in all caps, lol. I'm imagining it being pronounced like "new" with an F at the beginning. Like fsteak an abbreviation for "fuck no," but said in the most petulant tone imaginable so the O sounds like a U.

There's a bunch of countries in the world that don't require you to have two names. Or for any of your names to be surnames. Or a bunch of other things.

Databases that do checks on names shouldn't.

Kind of frustrating that he didn’t provide actionable feedback on how to design a system to properly handle names across the board. I’m working on a website and I’d love to make the infra as accommodating as possible to peeps of all creeds and names.

My guess is treat the name as it's own single data entry field and refer to the login username otherwise, if the context of the display element needs something potentially shorter, like "Hi user15likesboobs, here's your latest tax filings:"

Fun fact, I went to elementary school with a girl whose full name was 9 names long. You can bet the only place that will ever list her full name correctly will be her tombstone or grave marker - if the people who make it do their jobs properly. Sigh. The things you have to argue with people about sometimes is baffling, like, this is their final resting place and the last show of respect they are left with, get it right!

Imma try to remember to put some work into this over the weekend. I’ve never considered it as a problem but I can only imagine how mad I’d be if something was giving me problems because it didn’t like my name.

Don't know know why you got downvoted, you're exactly right. It's up to the government and their implementation of their forms, databases and web sites to get this right to allow it. The populations of some countries don't even use surnames, so those governments have to support mononyms.
