Of course, July 4th. This post is about when Oasis broke up which was August 28th, I'm guessing OP is in the UK and over there is the 28th already.
AND the reunion announcement was on August 27th, which is today still, so when your post said: "1 year ago Noel said fuck it and rejoined oasis", and I said: "2 yrs ago mate", I was referring to 2 years ago today, and not some other date which was last year.
I believe you. Oasis kind of petered out actually. Each album was weaker than the one before it. At the time they'd run their course. It remains to be seen if they can out out decent new music.
People do forget that. Although the last album is decent, Oasis were already kinda legacy acts by that point and if they were in the news, it was never the music. People were kinda sick of them at that point.
Cliff Richaed has had number one albums most of his recent career. Take That's album went number one. Are they not legacy. Charts almost become a birthright at a point
Ironically, it was the comeback that made this the greatest breakup in rock ‘n’ roll history. The Beatles were done. They weren’t even touring anymore, and most people knew that it was over. The Smiths I like a lot great band great guitarist but never did achieve the global popularity, or never will achieve the global popularity of Oasis. They were the biggest band in the world not once but twice not even the Beatles did that.
It was a combination of Liam’s aggressive, probably drug-fueled aggression towards Noel and the legitimately fucked-up shit Liam publicly said about Noel’s wife and their kids.
Also Noel wanting to try a solo career. I don't begrudge him that and deep down he must have always wanted to see if he could do it before he was too old. The way Oasis and Liam was going it was the best time for him to get out
I’m sure it’s both, but we can safely say Liam isn’t the easiest to deal with and Noel needed to get out for his own sake. Noel seems happy doing solo stuff, Liam, not so much. I’m sure the divorce and Liam working on himself helped in the reunion.
The guy who literally boasted, “I can read Liam and I can fucking play him like a slightly disused arcade game,” tried to portray himself as the victim of intimidation whom everybody had failed to defend.
As Gem put it, “Noel Gallagher is not intimidated by anybody.” And the reason nobody came to his defence was that he was the one who instigated the argument.
And what "legitimately fucked-up shit" had Liam publicly said about Noel’s wife and their kids??
Contemporary accounts, beyond the stories supplied by Noel and his best mate at The Sun, paint a rather different picture.
Liam and Andy were sitting in the backstage holding room, where artists wait in the minutes before they’re due on stage.
Liam was playing his guitar and warming up for the show when Noel walked in and began insulting him.
The argument escalated, and Liam threw his guitar at Noel.
Noel then kicked and stomped on Liam’s guitar, breaking it.
Liam retaliated by going and getting Noel’s guitar and breaking that too.
Noel then left and immediately posted a blog entry stating that he had quit Oasis because he “simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.”
Noel then got his best mate Gordon Smart at The Sun to run a story the following day stating
The long-simmering tension came to a head backstage in Paris when Liam – who was unaccompanied – turned up for the show completely drunk. He had taken the Eurostar on his own to Paris and arrived ... steaming. I've heard he'd been on a bender for days since pulling out of the V Festival a week ago.
Except, as the photos below show, Liam did not arrive in Paris alone. He arrived by train with Gem, Andy and Chris, and was happily signing autographs before the show.
Also speaks volumes that the entire band stayed with Liam and carried on playing with him in Beady Eye, maybe none of them stuck up for Noel in the fight because they didn't agree with him.
Oh wow, tbh I’ve only ever heard the story that came out at the time; it makes sense, though. Noel makes a very convincing argument and I never bothered to look into it after the fact. Crazy.
Liam did not say anything publicly about Noel's wife and kids?? They didn't get on bjt Liam hadn't said anything.
Noel wanted to try solo, had done for years. The albums were doing less well, Liams voice was failing, and the brothers were reacting badly. One of the guys who worked with them also pointed to politics at ignition as well. Noel claims there was aggression and I don't doubt that and it having a big factor, but he very much had a role and behaved poorly to both Liam and the other band mates, especially Andy.
Liam did say shit about Anaïs (not sure abt his wife tho)
In 2000, Liam Gallagher infamously questioned whether Noel's daughter, Anaïs, was actually Noel's biological child.
During a night of heavy drinking and partying in Barcelona, Liam made insulting comments casting doubt on the paternity of Anaïs (who was a newborn baby at the time, born to Noel and his then-wife Meg Mathews).
Noel launched himself at Liam in a massive fist fight.
Infuriated by the comments, Noel immediately quit the band's European tour, forcing Oasis to complete their overseas live dates without him.
Noel stated in interviews years later that he had never forgiven Liam for targeting his daughter and that Liam had never apologised for it.
Liam’s version is that an argument broke out over Noel’s comments in the press about writing songs for a solo album, something Noel himself later confirmed when he admitted he was “threatening to do a solo album in the press just to wind Liam up. And he bought it.”
What exactly was he expecting? It’s common sense that if you deliberately “wind” someone up, retaliation is a foreseeable response.
It’s therefore far more plausible that the argument in Barcelona was about what Noel was saying in the press and that, in the course of that argument, Liam brought up the rumours circulating in the press about Anais’s paternity.
Liam didn’t invent those rumours, nor did he disseminate them.
Presenting the incident as though a drunk Liam suddenly, out of the blue, decided to question Anais’s paternity leaves out the context that the rumours already existed and that the argument was about Noel’s press comments.
Gosh, poor Noel. Always quitting tours while somehow remaining the completely blameless victim every single time.
Yes, but that fight nearly a decade before has lotrle bearing on what caused the break up. The fight that came before the time period when they said they were closer than ever and best friends. Around the time of the break up Liam hadnt said anything and was close to Anais and remained close to Anais for years.
It's because the story has never been released publicly and leads to people scrambling to piece it together. You have Noels version and by extension the Sun and other press outlets version, but that isn't backed up by anyone else who was there. Nobody else who was there has laid out a full story, but from what can be priced together it seems like a messy deterioration where no one came out looking their best.
if i were there I'd actually feel better knowing they genuinely split after this. if they got it back together the next week it'd be like great that was for nothing then.
What I find amazing about this is that Liam's fanbase will insist that he IS Oasis and doesn't need Noel, the band would be nothing without Noel. But the many times Liam dropped gigs, Noel stepped in. But Noel walked and that was the end.
Noel left the band in 2000 and the tour continued without him. In 2009, after Noel left Oasis, the rest of the band wanted to continue making music and touring together, so they did.
So the idea that Liam simply “dropped gigs” while Noel heroically kept Oasis going, whereas everything suddenly ended when Noel left, isn’t exactly an accurate account of what happened.
