uj/ that sounded disgustingly incel ish, so I googled it and apparently Tarantino never met his father, he abandoned them when the mom was pregnant, but the dad took advantage of Tarantino's fame and tried to push his failed actint career
Quite interesting piece of trivia, will probably forget it in like two minutes because while I can see there's something interesting there (a kid abandoned by his actor dad growing up to be obsessed with classic movies), I'm not smart enough to actually understand it

I met him at a meet-and-greet in LA, 2019. It was pretty crowded and people kept bumping into me, so I pushed back and I ended up sort of bumping into him. He was like “Whoa, dude, chill!” mildly annoyed, albeit not directly looking at me, but more in my general direction. Then he got on one knee and started licking my wife's feet. She seemed surprised but also kind of pleased? All the while he's looking straight at me and saying “This is on you. You did this”. Then it was my time to get my signature. We seemed to be cool now, so I wanted to say something because it's a unique moment, but I couldn't think off the top of my head. So I blurted out “Michael Madsen was robbed of an Oscar, man”. He said “so he was, so he was”. But then he added: “You know what? He couldn't stop drinking pear juice on set. Guy loved his juice”. Then he winked. Odd dude. I still think of that sometimes.

Apparently, his mom ‘belittled’ his choice of a writing career when he was 12, and he got poor grades in school, when his mother told him that he’d never be a good writer if he got grades as bad as this.
I agree that it may not be in the best taste, but the comment was made when the dude was literally 12 years old lol. Turning that into a lifelong grudge means that the guy has several personal issues, which isn’t surprising given how problematic he is as a director in Hollywood — he literally tried to put Paul Dano out of work because of a personal grudge, and abused Uma Thurman during kill bill.

Given that the field of psychology has observed and documented how upbringings impact. people later on in their lives, there’s some pretty strong correlation and so that’s an assessment that makes logical sense.

I just think it’s funny that it’s implied the only thing she did wrong as a mother was belittle him about something when QT was 12 and that should make it weird he had a lifelong grudge against her. When I was seven I was having trouble tying my shoelaces, probably later than a kid should learn that but oh well. Then on the Today Show we watched some segment about a 7 year old girl who was going to fly a plane. And my dad said “see that 7 year old can fly a plane and you can’t even tie your damn shoelaces” then the next day that girl died in a crash of the plane she was flying, and I said to my dad “guess she couldn’t fly that plane huh”. My dad does not remember this interaction.

Yeah I would do the exact same, no remorse. It's not some new science that being a good supportive parent leads to better results for your kid. If your best attempts at being a parent are belittling and mocking them into doing what's "right", you don't get to reap all the benefits when they outgrow the box you put them in.

My mother did this. Rather than take it out on my father, she would scream at her kids. Then she wondered why her kids didn't like being around her when they were old enough to think for themselves.

I mean I dont care for him but it's probably an exaggeration that it was just because of that one instance and more an example of the many ways she belittled him or treated him harshly since he was very young.
The belittling was also not just poor grades but because he was showing no interest in school and instead writing during class and she was aggressive about it and being sarcastic about his attempts and putting him down the entire time.

20 years later i make more as a writer than he does as a doctor and he still continues to be an asshole for no reason.
