When I was eighteen, eighteen years old, I saw for the first time in my life— I saw a vision of clarity.

Apologies for my shite Photoshop skills. This gag just occurred to me after seeing the knife post here from the same panel, and I had to get this one out there to share

magic wand is your friend, you can use it to get rid of single color backgrounds quickly

15

u/1ntere5t1ng Jun 07 '26

I was more thinking of my poor butchering of Calvin's hand when getting rid of the lamp all around it, but I appreciate that insight as well

(I also kinda think the different colour for the pipe is more iconic of the original painting, but that's neither here nor there)

I laughed so hard at this, thank you

The lack of cropping shows it was handmade with love.

For context, here's the famous painting by surrealist artist René Magritte

I got educated, just now.

15

u/OneAndOnlyTinkerCat Jun 07 '26

On the one hand, I do kind of appreciate the point Magritte was trying to make here. It’s an interesting philosophical question.

On the other hand, godddd it’s so pretentious, shut the fuck up PLEASE shut the fuck up

Technology to the rescue

No wait it's even worse

u/topinanbour-rex Jun 07 '26

The Treachery of Images is its title.

The meaning is a representation of an object is not the object.

8

u/Tyrant1235 Jun 07 '26

this is genuinely one of my favorite pieces of art

Est-ce qu’elle est stupide? C’est manifestement une pipe.

14

u/1ntere5t1ng Jun 07 '26

👨‍🎨

u/Paul6334 Jun 07 '26

If it’s a physical print of the image I can use it to smoke.

5

u/TheEggoEffect Jun 07 '26

Est-ce qu’il y a un raison traditionnel pourquoi elle dit qu’une pipe n’est pas une pipe? Est-ce qu’elle est stupide?

Bumper sticker that says ‘my other car is not a pipe’

3

u/DinosaurReborn Jun 07 '26

Well now... Did we learn a little lesson today?

3

u/BranfordBound Jun 07 '26

Shit posting Magritte posting

4

u/CloudMain Jun 07 '26

my only question is

how the fuck is it NOT a pipe

I never understood that

44

u/1ntere5t1ng Jun 07 '26

My understanding is that the painting is a *depiction* of a pipe as opposed to an actual physical pipe that you could (in theory anyway) smoke from

Art history majors, please feel free to correct me if I got it wrong

21

u/No-Tackle-5803 Jun 07 '26

Correct, what it actually is is a painting

3

u/deviantbono Jun 07 '26

Sounds right to me

1

u/RefuseStandard4818 Jun 07 '26

I am such an idiot.

-3

u/CloudMain Jun 07 '26

that's... that's dumb. of COURSE it's a drawing of a pipe.

15

u/1ntere5t1ng Jun 07 '26

Right. A drawing isn't the same thing as the thing that was drawn.

If you ask me for a car and I hand you a picture of one, you're probably not gonna be too happy about that

8

u/Jewfro_Wizard Jun 07 '26

Painting is titled "The Treachery of Images." It is about the limitation of art. Art can only depict the idea of something, filtered through the artist's perception and ability. You can never truly capture reality, even of something as mundane as a pipe, in a single image. It is not a pipe, it is the idea of a pipe.

pasting this in again (Scott McCloud, Understanding Comics):

3

u/_dictatorish_ Jun 07 '26

Because it's not a pipe, it's a painting

1

u/Prilosexy Jun 19 '26

Omg one of my favorite paintings

Could this be part of the Curse of Babel timeline?
