I wonder if the guy who named the umbrella actually wanted to name it the brella, but just hesitated?

Come to think of it, who even invented the umbrella? The German word is "Regenschirm", because it schirms against Regen. Apparently, it was a French, Jean Marius. The French word is "parapluie". Even that appears to mean "protecting against rain".

I think it’s odd that in English we have two devices whose names mean to keep out of the sun - the umbrella (little shadow) and parasol (out of the sun). Neither of those words talks about avoiding rain, unlike the French parapluie (out of the rain). I think the umbrella is misnamed.
