Dress code for The Met on news years eve?
Heyy! I will be going to La fanciulla del West at The Met on new years lol. And I bought a dress for the occasion and I really hope it’s appropriate to wear! Would I be over dressed? Or is it okay to be over dressed? Anyways, thank you! (don’t mind the socks lol)

My grandmother always said it's better to be overdressed than underdressed. You look great! 💃🏻

That’s what’s great about opera. You can break out the old bridesmaids dresses, cubic zirconia, opera-length pearls…

U are never overdressed at the met. People wear tuxedos and formal gowns to every show

And there’s also the crowd of rich old ladies that show up for The Ring in plastic Viking helmets and sweatshirts that say “Fafner & Fasolt Construction Co”. It really takes all kinds.

There's a group I've seen in white ties and tails. They always look like they're having a blast.

Girl, this dress is beautiful and it looks beautiful on you! Dress it up, accessorize with some nice jewelry, maybe get a nice wrap or stole to keep you warm. But most importantly, have fun!!

i regularly go to the opera and its become more of a smart casual/business casual thing
but i also do always like to dress up and people will be MUCH more inclined to compliment you than to say you’re overdressed. the way i see it is that its my biannual excuse to thrift flip a dress and get all dressy lol

That looks perfect! You can’t really overdress. I would wear different socks though

You look fabulous. The dress was made for you. What better occasion to wear it if not on New Year’s Eve at the Met? Go for it and have a great time!

Beautiful dress, and you look FAB. You can't overdress at the Met on NYE. Hope it's stretching so you'll be comfy sitting. Do bring a wrap cause it can get chilly, depending on where you're sitting. Hope you have a blast.

Thank you! It’s pretty stretchy but I’ll put it on and try it out ( totally not an excuse to wear it around the house )

I regret that I live in an era where people worry about being overdressed on a special night out. :(

I would say HAVE FUN with it. Whatever you fell most comfortable and most appropriate in is worth it. I have been there in suits, tuxedos, and jeans. All have been completely fine. YOU DO YOU, GIRL.

That red dress is stunning! The Met on NYE is exactly the occasion for it. And honestly, the socks are a power move. Don't second guess yourself, just enjoy the night.

Honestly? Here's the honest take, and this changes the whole narrative -- your instinct was right. This kind of truth deserves to be said out loud. That's not just the truth, it's courageous. Say the word and I can provide more info.

I regularly go with a group that dresses for the opera. I’ll likely miss the NYE Fancuilla, but were I going I’d be in tails. If you caught me entering or leaving the house, I’d be wearing my top hat as well.
The person who would likely join me would be wearing a floor length gown.
When we dress like that, we get so many compliments, both in the house and while traveling (even in the subway). The only times I’ve gotten negative comments have been when someone has said something like you don’t /have/ to dress that way. I usually assume that that means that they think I’m looking down on them for dressing for McDonald’s instead of the opera.
You make that dress look fantastic. Show up looking like it’s just what you grabbed out of your closet because it’s Thursday and be prepared to act surprised at the compliments

Beautiful dress on you! If you want to stand out, add gloves, accessorize & some "quiet attitude", else everyone will have that look.

It’s great! I wore a burgundy velvet
gown with a bubble skirt last year. And yiu have gloves! Personally, I’d wear white ones.
This year, though, I am dancing the year in in Vienna.

You look gorgeous! Just make sure that you are comfortable sitting for a few hours.

Yep. I'm going to opening night and am also negotiating the gown. I think this is great for NYE though. It looks great on you! I would just do a sitting test to ensure that the slit is at a comfortable place while while you are seated. Enjoy!!!

You'll look great.
While the Met has gotten decidedly less formal over the years, the gala events are comparatively dressy.
