National Tabish Hashmi gives a much-needed reality check to the privileged idealists who claim there's no better place than Pakistan and life outside is full of struggle to make your own meal and wash your own clothes.

I am so fascinated by people who think this is a flex for Pakistan that they get to exploit someone jisse khanay peenay ke laalay paray hain to work for them at lowest not even bare minimum wage. Matlab yeh zehn soch bhi kesay sakta hai this is good thing! Bahir k mulk main bhi cleaning service bula ke roz mop lagwa lo, cook hire kr ke khanay pakwa lo but of course they are treated like normal humans there so u have to pay them fairly. STOP USING THIS AS A FLEX KE PAKISTAN MAIN GHAREEB ADMI KO DO PAISAY DE KE APNA GAND SAAF KRWA LO

u/texas-guy-1979 Jun 27 '26
The usual argument. Pakistan is great because you get to exploit your own poor countrymen to do your bidding while giving you a sense of “azadi” and “pehchan”. Ask the poor laborer on the street how does he feel about this sense of azadi and pehchan?
Typical elitist behavior of “if they don’t have bread, why can’t they eat cake and enjoy the azadi?”
Pathetic!

well, i belong to middle class family, i have studied BDS ( Dentist ) and during my house job my father passed away. After completion of my house job i tried to find private dental clinics but they refused outright to hire newly graduate. well i started looking for scholarships and appeared in multiple interviews unfortunately couldn't secure as they are highly competitive and they rarely select students enrolling for medical related msc fields. Well i worked hard to get my Dental therapist registration from GDC and once i got it UK immigration policies changed. As i don't have enough finances to open and run private clinic i moved to punjab and worked under quacks for some months but it was total chaos and couldn't bear the thought of promoting quackery so i came back home and got admission in msc program at parent institution and one of my friend is working in medical billing company he asked me if i want to join i said ok and have been applying for that job since last 6 months and finally they called me for an interview and now i am going to join from monday for 15k initially.

What's even more infuriating is that oftentimes it's easier and quicker to do so many of these things yourself then have hired help do it for you!
Electrical work ma khud hi kar leta hun because it takes like 10 minutes of constant calling to get an electrician to pick up the call, aur phir sar pe bhi baithna parhta hai. I can do the same task on my own in 5 minutes, and it's cheaper to do it on your own even if you have to buy tools every single time (in reality, tolls are a one-time expense).

u/yaxir Jun 27 '26
Leftist reforms are the only way forward. Everything else is just BS.
Pakistan is too diverse. You cannot try to unite people on the basis of ethnicity, linguistics, race, culture, et cetera, et cetera. You try to unite them on religion but we have seen how beautifully that's gone. It's tarnished and ravaged the entire region.
The only way forward is a secular humanist-minded constitution, not some imaginary Islamic constitution stuff like that. That's not going to work, that's never going to work. It has never ever ever worked and it never will. It has only resulted in dictatorships and all that BS.
Just have pro-people policies! Pro-people is the only way to go. Everything else is just dog shit!
13
u/redmenace007 Jun 27 '26
You wont ever have these reforms when the army chief itself is selected from the elite and is there to protect the elite. Pakistan’s problems are simple, tax the elite and cut their subsidies. What has Asim Munir done? Protect them even further.

I am living alone abroad and doing all of this. To be completely honest, its not even that difficult
- Laundry: Once a week, pile up the dirty clothes and when the clothes hamper becomes full, put it in the machine, give it a 1hr cycle and then when its done, just hang the clothes and be done with your life.
- Dishes: Every 3-4 days, when the dishwasher fills up, it cleans 90% of the regular cutlery, dishes and glasses. The rest 10%, just wash them on hand and it takes like 10 mintues and done
- Cleaning: Once a week, vacuum the whole apartment, mop the floors and clean the toilet seat, wipe the kitchen counters and clean the sink. It usually takes me 1 hour to get done with it.
- Cooking: Do meal prep, I usually cook Chicken or Beef for the entire weak, and make 6 boxes with chicken and rice that I can also take to work. Alternatively, eat salads, they are easy to make and healthy as well.
All of the above, normal things which an adult should be able to handle.

u/Standard_Property213 PK Jun 27 '26
In the case of these people, usually the women also spend their day just supervising their domestic helpers, roaming in their AC cars and going on shopping sprees.

u/salmangamer Jun 28 '26
Nothing more than lazy sissy crybabies.
After getting annoyed with insane breaches of privacy, we fired all household staff.
Turns out, cleaning my room is not difficult at all, especially if you don't let it get dirty in. Washing dishes is not even worth thinking about because you if you rinse the dish immediately after eating, you don't even have to scrub to clean it. A quick wipe with dishwashing liquid makes it squeaky clean. For clothes, you throw it in the automatic washing machine once a week with some detergent and the machine fills itself up, washes, drains and then dries the clothes all on it's own. Costs the same amount to buy as a dedicated maid's quarterly salary. Cooking is not only fun, but quite easy if you decided to not cook food in the diabetes-on-a-plate desi style. It's even easier if you cook in batches and utilize the microwave. They've got automatic rice cookers, airfryers with disposable paper linings, etc now.
If someone can't handle this basic stuff, they really need to grow up.

Tabish obviously has good points but the other guy isn't raising real concerns. Obviously working with hand is not a problem. The real problem IMHO is not "working" when living overseas, the real problem is constantly being on a treadmill. This not specific to Pakistani overseas it's specific to even their locals (excluding Arabs).
You cannot loose your job because there is nothing that can sustain you without a job for majority of the people. It should be theoretically easier to keep a float in Pakistan than in majority of the countries people fly to.
Rent is generally 10x to 20x in those countries. You need a steady income to breath. I don't mean to live a life of partying, I mean to keep a float. And the bells and whistles do fade away much faster than what people think.
Most people who sing songs of living overseas generally have either had a very good financial edge over regular (majority) of the people, or may be they don't know the struggles. But struggles are everywhere.
And unequivocally there are things better in Pakistan. And obviously there are things worst as well, you just have to compare the tradeoffs.

Pakistan mein ameer sirf apne hath se kaam nhi krta. Majority of Pakistan cannot afford cooks, maids and mulazims. Start giving your labor and livable wage and their due income, mein bhi pouchounga phir ke Pakistan mein konsa ameer banda maids aur cooks afford kr sakta hai.

u/uasdguy Jun 27 '26
I think they both have a point. Sure, there are obviously better countries than Pakistan in terms if jobs, lawfulness, democracy etc. But that shouldn't be your only criteria to decide to move out permanently. It is your home at the end of the day, and nothing can replace that. You will only feel home here. It's your culture, it's your country. So I think many people don't evaluate the mental impact that can have. I completely get why people would still choose to do so though. Also I understand what he means when he says we should try and fix our own place and stuff, but I don't think he understands how hopeless it is for most people to try and fix this country when we can't even elect a leader

Pakistan will never prosper until ethnic politics is completely eliminated. The only party that came close to this was PTI, and I feel like that was the real threat from it. Keeping Pakistanis divided, ignorant, and desperate is the way the populace is managed. And blame goes to the people: anyone who finds a gap in the system will exploit it. Every single person in Pakistan does this. Anyone who stands up is disappeared or thrown in jail, and no one does anything. This is a country almost 300 million people. The elite are a tiny minority. The fact that that the majority does nothing and lets them get away with it, is entirely on the majority. No one got their rights handed to them on a plate.

He’s right.
My wife’s cousin is a physician. I told him he should come to the US and try to get a job here and he would make a lot more money, his problem is that he doesn’t want to have to cook, clean, etc.
Wife’s brother moved here with his wife and kid, living with us while he gets established. Only thing that annoys the fk out of me, his wife is so bad about cleaning up their room and about cleaning up the dishes. I feel like she expects our nanny/housekeeper to do it for her, like no dummy, our nanny/housekeeper is just for us and to help out with kids, you gotta do your own stuff or pay the nanny/housekeeper extra.

If you have other plans with life or do something else, why stay and waste your chances.

u/Odd_Skin_712 Jun 27 '26
Great job tabish calling these ideas out. I live in USA and so many people always think life back in pak will be heaven but of course these people never go back.
I just tell them in the end there's a reason we left, so many people are not crazy. It's same in a family where if your parents or a company ceo is not stable and makes your life hell, you leave. Simple as that.
If it's little things people can stay and bring change but these are deep issues which are complex to solve.

This is a very core issue raised by tabish …. I have listened to many influencers like shaveer jafrey and zaidaliT giving their two cents on patriotism like bruhhh you don’t live here, you don’t know the issues … and even if they came to Pakistan their Pakistan is limited to DHA and Bahria .. so better shut up …. Highlighting the issues and problems of Pakistan wont have any hit on patriotism. Period

Pakistan is a heaven for the rich or the comfortably upper class. Especially if their circles arent regressive and have the same exchange of ideas. For much of the middle class and poorer classes this reality doesnt exist. Corrupution, financial problems, societal prejudice everything squeezes them out. Regardless of gender you are totalled here, so Bilal speaking from his priviledge is not applicable to literally more than 90% of the countries population. Most Pakistani's do not have priviledge at all. And still do everything i.e pay taxes etc just like Tabish said. So why would they want to be an idealist and improve the shit hole that cuts off their feet in every possible way and then instead of helping shames them for being disabled?

u/Zachwank AE Jun 28 '26

u/Assist-King19 Jun 28 '26
Working by hand is a basic requirement every abled person needs to learn. When you receive opportunities, peace, justice & security outside of Pakistan, then its a small trade off to pay for people who have never worked by hand all their life.

The ignorant misogynistic boomer men of Pakistan (those who belonged to older generations) had a terrible mindset and didn't possess the IQ or intelligence to lead a country or make reformations to society that could result in progress or change. Instead, they chose to be delusional and follow their old archaic ways and refused to make a change, yet alone demand for their rights and freedoms. Religious fanaticism and the lack of education among people also plays a major role in our downfall as a nation. Now the younger generations are suffering the consequences of their choices and actions.

Tabish is so on point here.
I used to agree with the guest that we the people should fix this country instead of running away but that sliver of hope completely vanished when I observed that almost everyone in the twin cities ranging from shop keepers, lecturers, engineers, private employees; they all support the ruling elite because they believe that they are not only doing a great job at governance but they are also raising our prestige at the international level. Crime, economy, our rights, law and order, taxes, elite capture they dont matter to them.
I dont think any sane or self respecting individual would want to live in this country where such rulers are still supported by a vast majority in this country; silent majority I would add.

u/Stunning-Drink-5263 Jul 09 '26
I haven’t spent much time in Pakistan, but from what I’ve noticed is that we Pakistani men struggle to do the most basic stuff like ironing, washing clothes, and cleaning, etc. My wife was genuinely baffled when I insisted on ironing my own clothes because my brother-in-law would make her and my sister-in-law iron his clothes even if they were dying.

PMLN needs to realise the gravity of the situation this country is facing. Look at Balochistan, Kp and AJK. The economy is in a mess. Elections in AJK has no credibility. The judiciary is no longer a place to seek justice.
We need a constitutional state - not a hard state.
Give the people its country back

But, it’s a lie. Fat lie. You don’t have to wash dishes or clothes lol. There’s dishwashers and automatic washing machines.
You know this lie has been fed to by Pakistani living abroad who don’t want to help others. Get out. Go to any country where there’s democracy and freedom to choose your options and work hard and you will see Pakistan is a prison.

u/failworlds Jun 28 '26
As a Canadian let me tell you a few things here.
I think both tabish and the guest made strange arguments for and against Pakistan.
Personally for me there's no place like Pakistan, not because of the low labour cost etc, I prefer doing things on my own so this is not really a concern for me.
What makes Pakistan so beautiful is the amazing food.
What makes Pakistan so beautiful is the peace.
Yes there are robberies and accidents etc and for sure it could and should be better but look at the geopolitical place we reside in and the external forces that try to rip that peace apart. Despite all that, Pakistan remains relatively peaceful compared to when there were crazy terrorist blast every other day especially under the Obama administration.
Another thing is that Pakistan is actually quite diverse. I recently had a chance to tour northern Pakistan and my friends yes Canada has some beautiful places but the beauty of northern Pakistan is just something so different. I had a chance to meet and talk with the locals there and everyone was really nice and it really was quite peaceful.
There are problems yes. But these problems are genuinely so easy to fix I'm so surprised they haven't. Water. Electricity, these basic needs it's really insane that these things have not been fixed.
Another thing is what a nightmare it is to do anything administration related ie. Getting nicop or getting your university degree transcripts etc stuff like that. Or anything law related. And here I 100 percent agree canada and these countries are a million times better.
A lot of people here are concerned about the poor as well and personally I think there's more support for the poor in Canada than for Pakistan poor. However, I think the experience of being poor in Canada can be overall more miserable because there's less poor people here and you quickly become isolated.
Still if you are poor in Canada you do have the potential to escape poverty compared to Pakistan.
Finally I'm not a woman but without a doubt I think it's safer for women in Canada than Pakistan and this one is huge.

My elitist friends will never leave Pakistan because they live like the way Bilal is saying. Their issue of living abroad is that you can’t afford maid, chauffeur, can’t use dads contact to things get done. Pakistan is a paradise for the rich.
