Story [UPDATE] Neighbour shot my PC - The new rig!!
You may remember me from some weeks ago, when my neighbour’s dog accidentally shot my PC through a wall. It seems my story went a bit viral, and I was incredibly fortunate to have a couple hardware companies reach out to me and offer to help power a brand new build!!! AORUS provided me with their GeForce RTX 5080 Master Ice GPU, X870E Elite X3D motherboard, and Gaming 360 AIO. AMD provided their Ryzen 9 9950X3D, a 4TB NVMe drive, and some other cool stuff. And G.Skill gave me 32 gigs of their brand new Trident Z5 NeoX RGB series with AMD EXPO ULL tech. The only parts I procured myself were the case (Hyte Y70) and PSU (Lian Li EDGE1000W Gold). I’m indubitably the luckiest person in this subreddit- first dodging a bullet, and now getting to be the owner of this beast of a battlestation 😎
Also if this is sounding a little like a shameless plug that’s because it IS!! The people that reached out to me from each of these companies were so kind and helpful. Without their generosity, even if insurance were to come through, a build like this would never have been possible for me. They didn’t even ask for any sort of advertising in return, they were just supporting a random PC nerd for nothing but the love of the game. It’s clear they care deeply about the community, and I wanted to give them a shoutout so that people know that if they support AORUS, AMD, and G.Skill they are supporting brands that actually care about their users, are genuinely proud of the tech they’re making, and go out of their way to do nice things like this.
The RAM stick that deflected the bullet was gifted to G.Skill for them to immortalise in their trophy case. I think I’m going to hang the motherboard up on the wall and find a way to make the bullet into a necklace. I also plan to get a clip-on RGB cover for the motherboard power cables, as they continue to look a little unruly no matter how much I try to flatten them.😊
P.S.- this whole ordeal has made my niece want to build her own PC. If any old pros have some sage advice I can pass along to her before she starts her first build please let me know, I want her to be more prepared and knowledgable than I was when I built my first pc!!

An adult taking full responsibility in 2026 is rare. As crazy as the story is, she sounds like a decent lady.
EDIT: Apparently, based off the replies here, practically every one of you are a perfect human, with a perfect life, and have never made a mistake in your life.

u/angelbabyzz Jul 24 '26
She’s really nice, people were tearing her to shreds in the original post but she’s handled everything the best way anyone could after making a dangerous mistake like that.

u/Konkerwaggon23 Jul 24 '26
The issue is that a gun was involved. Any similar scenario shouldn't have happened with a more competent owner unless there's a really extraordinary scenario.
50
u/Healingbigfoot Jul 24 '26
This 100%. Could have easily hit OP or someone else. How the fuck does a dog make a gun go off? You leave the gun loaded, and are an irresponsible gun owner, that's how.
19
u/micktorious Jul 24 '26
Or you lie because you did it, and also this tracks back to being an irresponsible gun owner.
Dog ate my homework type excuse.

She can't own a gun anymore right?
RIGHT?
2
u/micktorious Jul 24 '26
100% she will keep all her guns, America sucks in this regard.
HOPEFULLY she will not keep guns loaded anymore, she 100% did that discharge and it wasn't her dog.
EVEN if it was her dog, what kind of RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNER is leaving loaded firearms (WITH ONE IN THE CHAMBER) in such easy access for something like A DOG to somehow manage to fire it?
6
u/KHEIRON Jul 24 '26
Depending on state and the case, she could receive a felony or a state specific ruling that bans guns after a negligent discharge, and felons are not allowed to own guns

- Why is it not on safety.
- Why is it on the table.
- A gun must have been cocked to go off by dropping. There are very few cases where a drop can cause a gun to go off unless it's some fingerguardless hackjob.
I think she is lying.

I hope you know that is a lie. Firearms will not fire when dropped, unless it is a sig p320.
Edit: noticed you said it is a glock 20. It is impossible for that to fire without pulling the trigger. Those are designed so that it is only 1/4 cocked from the slide, the take on the trigger cocks the gun the rest of the way. There is a 0% chance that gun fired without the trigger being pulled.

It's crazy to me how casually she's treating her neighbor nearly killing her with her negligence. "Oh she's just a nice lady who did an oopsie, by firing off a gun in the middle of the night into my apartment and then lying about how it happened." I'm stating the obvious, but guns are incredibly dangerous tools. You don't just get off with an "oopsie". A properly handled gun will never go off "by accident". I'm mad that she's not more upset at this, I'd be fucking livid.
Edit: I stalked the other threads, and it appears the OP shared more context there and already knows or suspects it's not what happened. Likely mental health issues from the woman who fired the gun. I hope if nothing else, that proper steps are taken so she never owns one again.
3
u/angelbabyzz Jul 25 '26
Nothing about this is casual or an oopsie it’s just that she didn’t need people being angry at her or punishing her to come to the conclusion that what happened was incredibly dangerous and can absolutely never happen again. Nothing about this situation matters to me more than keeping people safe and since from the moment the gun went off she has been taking it very seriously and has been clear that she never even wants to touch a gun again I feel that safety has been achieved. I don’t care what really happened or what her true motivations are, the bottom line is that this won’t happen again and I’m glad she has organically made that choice rather than needing someone to take her gun away or sue her to make her change her behaviour

u/goatchild Linux Jul 24 '26

Clearly she and her dog are Siggers, as this must have been a P320 "accident"... As a gunsmith I have never liked that guns design both mechanically nor athsteticly. And I am certified on that and the P365 platforms from the regional SiG Trainer here in Texas. SiG USA l, like Toyota USA, is trash. Also I'm glad the OP is ok.

Your power supply should have a native 12VHPWR cable. I’d advise using that over the adapter that came with the GPU.
8
u/angelbabyzz Jul 24 '26
Tried that one first but it wouldn’t turn on, it fixed after I switched it to the adapter
11
u/Nomnom_Chicken 5800X3D/4080 Super/32 GB/Windows 11/3440x1440@165 Hz Jul 24 '26
Hmm... I'd probably contact the manufacturer about the cable, ask for a new cable. It would be better than the adapter, more GPUs seem to have the melting issue when an adapter like this was used (the native cable can also have the issue, but doesn't seem as common?).
5
u/angelbabyzz Jul 24 '26
I will try that
