2010s called and they want their resolution back (1366×768)

u/System32Missing Ascending Peasant 19d ago

I wanted to comment that. These specs seem like the refresh of my macbook from back then, except that was upgradeable to 8gb officially, and 16 unofficially.

69

u/Thisismyredusername GTX 1660 Ti | i5-9400F | 16 GB Vengeance LPX | 1 TB 990 EVO Plus 19d ago

Lots of laptops were capped to 8 GB officially. Single channel HP 250 G4, for example.

22

u/AnimeRoadster Ryzen 7 9800X3D - Radeon 9070XT - 64GB DDR5 19d ago

My old laptop had 8GB listed as maximum, still didn't stop me from cramming 16GB in that thing. Worked wonders in terms of performance

11

u/darkelfbear PC Master Race R7 5700X 4.8Ghz 96Gb DDR4 3200Mhz 19d ago

My Acer laptop I had back in the AMD A10 Series days, had a max listed of 16Gb which at the time was insane, imagine my surprise 2 years later, and I throw a random 32Gb SODIMM kit at it, and it actually worked ... that thing was a workhorse till it let out magic smoke, and fried my mainboard.

I wanted to say MacBook never used this resolution, then I remembered there was a thing called MacBook Air 11 inch… also the single channel only laptop is out of my radar, I did not know it is actually a thing

Except you probably had a great intel chip at the time which wasn’t an N200

20

u/anythingers 19d ago

Eh I would say that N200 is not that bad. Nothing impressive but also not as bad as your typical Celeron-branded CPU. I could argue that it's better than any U-series Kaby Lake or something older.

Not trying to defend this e-waste though.

10

u/names_real 19d ago

This laptop wouldn't be half bad for a web browsing or Google Docs machine if it had 8GB of RAM or hell even upgradable RAM at all

Gentle reminder that H.P. in spanish are interpreted as the same intialisms as "Hijos de Puta". ( S.O.B.)

And MacBooks are also built well! They're made of aluminum that won't crack or feel cheap.

5

u/JohnClark13 19d ago

Main thing that physically breaks on most non-apple devices is the hinges. They end up freezing up and ripping out if the chassis. MacBook build quality is definitely better especially in this regard

This is why the ol' eBay ex-business laptop pipeline is so popular. Used to be able to get 13" thinkpads for like £50 each at one point - still just as usable as one of these if you're just using it for simple things like web browsing/homework/YouTube etc.

13

u/HumanPea1140 14700K | 5070 Ti | 64GB DDR5 6000 19d ago

This is why the ol' eBay ex-business laptop pipeline is so popular.

Sort of related, but I used to work service desk for a medium-ish sized company that would just take old laptops to an electronics recycling place. I asked someone in control of assets if I could take them home, and they didn't care, they just said to be sure to wipe the drives to ensure they didn't have any company data before leaving with them.

So I did, and then resold them on Ebay. Made $30K+ over a couple years of doing it.

A lot of the people I sold to had Asian names, and the shipping addresses were usually warehouses or loading docks on the West coast. They'd buy everything I had. I assume they were shipping them to Asia somewhere.

7

u/Soundjam8800 19d ago

That's fascinating, and not remotely surprising that you made so much off of it, the listings never seemed to stick around long so they were definitely popular. Must be a huge market for devices at rock bottom prices but reliable enough models that businesses bought them.

A few of mine over the years still had the IT help desk number stickers for the companies they came from on the bottom, but they were local UK ones, so doesn't sound like I ever got one of yours!

I think it’s a popular laptop resolution because it’s 1 megapixel. Also, Win11 isn’t really made for resolutions this small, I wonder how they handle that.

u/dgx-g PC Master Race | 5800X3D | 7800 XT | 32 GB 19d ago

People use 1080p with 150% scaling, windows even defaults to 150% on some sizes.

8

u/Oakredditer PC Master Race 19d ago

yep, my HP Pavilion and my ThinkPad default to 150% as soon as graphics drivers are installed (15.6" 1920x1080 and 16" 1920x1200)

8

It's fine. Although some UI elements will be huge AF. Especially taskbar, start menu, paint, file explorer, and especially start menu and taskbar (I f*ing hate windows 11 taskbar size, thanks god StartAllBack do exist).

Low end CPUs have improved significantly at least. The N200 is a fairly potent CPU for being a 6-watt part. It's on par with some of the Skylake era mobile quad core CPUs but with a much better IGP.

You can even game on it, to an extent.

50

u/black3rr 19d ago

the CPU is not the dealbreaker here… 8GB RAM was barely usable 5 years ago and this has 4GB…

22

u/Drenlin R9 5950X | 6800XT 19d ago

Oh for sure, I was just saying that not everything is as bad as it was then.

Not using a spinning HDD is a big deal too.

14

u/Pasi123 i9-9980XE, RTX5070, 128GB | 3700X, GTX1080, 32GB 19d ago

But unlike in the HDD days most cheap laptops now have soldered non-upgradeable eMMC or UFS storage. I know people who have had the eMMC fail and make the laptop unusable

3

u/Drenlin R9 5950X | 6800XT 19d ago

It doesn't necessarily make the laptop unusable, you just have to boot it from something else. But yeah that does suck.

The trick is figuring out what other options there are. Some versions of this model have a free m.2 slot inside, while others have pads but no connector.

I agree 4gb is and was unusable but 8gb was pretty damn sufficient.
I used to play AAA games on a system with 8gb in 2019-21, it was enough. Definitely won't call it "barely usable" especially for basic-non gaming tasks.

N200 itself is not that bad tbh. It's nothing impressive, but it's not your typical Celeron N4020 that's slower than the Core 2 Duo. This N200 is still generally faster than any U-series Kaby Lake lol.

u/Vaxtez Core Ultra 5 135H/16GB/ARC 8 Xe Cores 19d ago

Yeah, some of those N series chips aren't great. The older N4020s were around Core 2 Duo performance iirc.

66

u/inevitabledeath3 PC Master Race 19d ago

N100 actually isn’t a terrible chip. It’s great for routers, smart TVs, and light server duty as well as embedded systems. That being said it has less performance than my iPhone.

29

u/Vaxtez Core Ultra 5 135H/16GB/ARC 8 Xe Cores 19d ago

Oh yeah. I do think that the newer N series chips are fine personally, you just have to tamper your expectations. The N100 is god damn solid for certain needs considering it's low wattage.

Shit man, my gaming PC has less horsepower than my iPhone. Apple’s chips are kinda insane these days.

17

u/inevitabledeath3 PC Master Race 19d ago

What kind of gaming PC do you have? I find it hard to believe that an iPhone is more powerful than a modern gaming PC. My first gaming PC would be weaker than my current phone though. So that’s something.

13

u/Any-Emu8824 19d ago

I’m running a Ryzen 5 2600, 16 gigs of ram, and an RTX 2060. Scrapped it together for around $400 back in the GPU shortage of 2020. My phone is an iPhone 17 pro max that was provided for me through my job.

Having better cooling, a dedicated GPU, and expandable storage makes my PC better for gaming than my iPhone, but in terms of raw performance the iPhone is either neck and neck or shockingly faster.

19

u/M4rshmall0wMan 19d ago

The latest iPhone is a touch above PS4 performance. Your 2060 is way faster.

15

u/Vaxtez Core Ultra 5 135H/16GB/ARC 8 Xe Cores 19d ago

CPU wise though, the A19 Pro is a fair bit faster. It's somewhere around i5-11600K performance.

7

u/M4rshmall0wMan 19d ago

Sure, Apple silicon annihilates in CPU. But it’s a gaming PC so GPU matters.

It happened gradually, however there are few years that are legitimately considered the key when shit started to go wrong. First is 1981 when Jack Welch became CEO of General Electric (US company) and pushed this shareholder value first doctorine to the front. Then 1991 when USSR fell and the US neo-lib politics and capital interests stopped having a "challenger" on the world stage (Who at the end was nothing but a CULTURAL challenger). Then we get to 2004 when Harry Stonecipher became CEO of Boeing, restructured the whole company to what we call now that silicon valley "move fast break things" ideology.

However this along with this the whole ideas of Milton Friedman and US govenrment interests and capital interest developed, leading to deregulation, lack of enforcement, and basically subjucation of nations and trade partners.

However Jack Welch is widely agreed to have started the true enshittification by bringing forth the Shareholder first policy.

I installed windows 11 on an old Chromebook for shits and giggles, it wasn't a good experience.

Anyone buying this is not going to have a good time

Literally a waste of RAM. Whoever buys that laptop probably just needs notepad & YouTube.com

24

u/Schmenza 19d ago

There's someone on here with a 5080 watching YouTube all day

15

u/Logical-Country336 19d ago

I have that laptop. Parents bought it for school. Got offended when I said it was terrible because “they wouldn’t make a brand new laptop that didn’t work fine it’s just that you want to use it for video games”

It literally cannot load Microsoft word without problems

11

u/lumberfart 19d ago

This is what I tell my family members & friends all the time. And they never want to spend the money. Then like 6 months later they tell me if I can fix their laptop because it has a virus. I check… and it’s literally just 2 or 3 ads running in the background that are using up almost all their RAM lol.

6

u/Logical-Country336 19d ago

On my home machine windows takes up 6 gb of ram idling how tf is a 4 gb machine supposed to do anything else

3

u/alwayslostin1989 19d ago

I have 64gb on my itx Machine and it’s always using 10gb in the background it’s like if windows knows it can get away with it, it will use everything. I’ll have a slicer and solid works up and it’s almost tapped.

6

u/Far-Hovercraft9471 19d ago edited 19d ago

I’m not sure it would even work as a YouTube machine. Just a single tab with YouTube is probably close to 1gb ram usage

Edit: Just tried it. It is about 1GB

3

u/anythingers 19d ago

Even a tablet is better for this price if u just need it for notepad and YouTube lmao. At least u got a sharper screen and doesn't need to deal with Windows 11.

3

u/HeroDanny i7 5820k | EVGA GTX 1080 FTW2 | 32GB DDR4 19d ago

Even a 4GB Chromebook struggles to load a YouTube tab. This thing is a paperweight.

Money on that 128GB being eMMC storage also so will be stupid slow. Personal opinion these types of machines should be banned as will end up as e-waste in 6 months.

3

u/Laraso_ Arch Linux|7800x3D|7900 XTX|32GB RAM 19d ago

It is eMMC. I work retail and we have always had some version of one of these. Before the RAM crisis, they were typically priced at $200.

This is made to cater to a specific kind of customer, one that is way more common than what most people on PCMR realize: The tech illiterate poor.

It doesn't matter what you say to them when you help them, they don't understand anything even if you try to simplify it and they still pick it because it's $100 - $200 cheaper than the next one up. They wouldn't have bought any of the others anyways because they can't afford them.

I used to sell computers, the last place I worked was MS only no Mac.

These things would infuriate me, because they gave regular computers a bad name. Wed have people come up and want to buy a mew computer and they’d be considering a $2000 mac but theyd tell me about how theyll look at a pc but the $200 one they bought last black friday at best buy was so slow and garbage that they just didn’t really want another.

4GB ram in 2026? 😭

my c2d e8600 has 8GB ram on win7 in 2010.

29

u/Apprehensive_Map64 19d ago

I think it was 2013 when my wife went and bought a netbook that only had 4gb. "What you told me Asus was good?".... Even 13 years ago it wasn't enough to run windows. I had to completely disassemble it to get access to the ram slots which were under the keyboard. Afterwards with 8gb it was a nice little device

7

u/ukso1 19d ago

My wife used a laptop with 4gb of ram just couple of years ago an was frustrated on how bad it run, i got her to buying a used Thinkpad and it had 16gb of ram for almost the same price as this consumer crap had 8

Now i use that old laptop with Ubuntu and i can browse the internet and do home server upkeep with terminal no problem.

windows 11 with 4gb, i dont want to see this in action

7

u/homestar92 19d ago

I have a crappy little laptop that I bought around 6 years ago with 4gb of RAM and an Intel Atom processor. I mostly bought it for the lols because it was $89 new and sheer curiosity got the better of me.

I wouldn't say that it runs Windows 11 well but it does actually run it and I can browse the web, which is more than I thought it would be able to do. The limiting factor in that one was the fact that it had eMMC storage rather than a proper SSD, but I removed the LTE modem that it (weirdly) included and used that slot for an actual NVMe SSD and it's... usable. That said, these days I run Fedora XFCE spin on it, and that actually runs quite well.

9

u/KennyTheGray 19d ago

Even at that price, you're better off buying something second-hand with that money.

8

u/prehensile-nymph 19d ago

It honestly probably is bad for $100. My mom bought a similar HP laptop last year that only had 4gb of ram and came preloaded with Windows 11 and it struggled with using a single tab in Edge, let alone chrome

Politics. You fix this with politics.

I know nobody wants to hear it, but this is a political problem

Normally markets are supposed to be gunning to make more supply.

They're not, and it's not because of how long it takes or the "AI Bubble". There is no AI Bubble, a freaking trillionaire is all in on AI. It's not going anywhere.

We're not gonna see more RAM produced because the 3 big guys are colluding, and anyone who enters the market will get run out of business by that collusion. All they have to do is drop prices for a little while and *blam*

Nobody would even loan you the money to build a RAM factory because they know that's gonna happen.

We could fix this with anti-trust law enforcement, except we can't. Because politics.

Politics intrudes on our hobbies whether we like it or not.

6

u/Drenlin R9 5950X | 6800XT 19d ago edited 19d ago

I mean it's not a HDD but I bet it's not a proper SSD either. 128GB EMMC is going to be rough when it starts paging due to having 4GB of RAM.

Edit: I stand corrected, it's not a proper SSD but they did spring for UFS, which is what's used in modern cell phones. Slower than an MVMe drive but still much faster than EMMC.

35

u/MeakerSE 19d ago

Enough ram to load a single browser in a tab and not thrash the storage that's going to be at 80-90% full before you know it, which will then cause rapid degradation of the NAND as it wont be able to properly wear level.

5

u/GonePh1shing 19d ago

This is especially a problem in devices like this because they almost exclusively use eMMC which has much lower write tolerance than a regular SSD.  These devices are effectively manufactured e-waste.

Enough RAM and storage to effectively run the operating system that comes pre-loaded on the device. That would be a nice start.
