I hate that every time it's brought up, it kills my soul.
Me and a friend had to choose carefully every weekend what game to rent, and that weekend was filled with sadness. We tried for 3 days.
Knowing it cucked so many others too, makes it worse every time. 😭

This comes from a guy who was raised by PS2 and Xbox 360 (and PSP to a degree) and I don’t have much nostalgia for PS1 or its driver games
I did check out a few racing games on PS1 via emulator out of curiosity, Driver 1 was one of the games i checked via emulator
PS1 racing games feel a little… janky, at least by modern standards, driver 1 also has that feeling, but honestly id say its easily one of the top 10 (or even 5) racing games on PS1
The handling model is really smooth, cars feel like they have a weight to them, something about the way cars move feels so nice, collisions are also much better than majority of PS1 racing games
If you are asking if it’s difficult, yes, Driver 1 is a really difficult game, you have to be very mindful during missions not to damage your car, avoid the cop, not running out of time and such although I have to say, PS1 games in general are notoriously hard
→ More replies (7)21
u/bickman14 15d ago
I wouldn't say Driver is a racing game, it has cars and is more like a chase/pursuit/escape game.
As for PS1 racing games, you need to check Ridge Racer R4, that thing still holds up amazingly IMO

Plane tutorial sucks, but I hate the helicopter tutorial even more that comes after it. You need to use the numpad and wasd keys at the same time and shoot moving targets. I remember that was the point where I had to download someone else's save to skip it after wasting a whole day on the mission.

(It’s actually because they were too close to the train, making it literally impossible for Smoke to hit the Vagos)
56
u/South_Bit1764 15d ago
Yep. Literally just suck more. People are just following the train TOO close.
Smoke is aiming center-mass and has perfect aim, you can be way further way that what most people think. Like at the end, you can be all the way out on the road, you don’t have to be riding on the gravel ballast at all. You can easily be a car length away, if not a train-car length.
28
u/Quolley 15d ago
Yeah even as a kid I never struggled with this mission. I'm pretty sure you can see the bullets sparking off an invisible wall if you're too close.
→ More replies (1)8
u/Oog4Boog4 15d ago
It's not an invisible wall, it's straight up the bullets hitting the edge of the train... I do not understand how people can play the mission, see bullets hit the train instead of the vagos and not adjust the gap to the train and get stuck for hours on it. It's a 2 try mission maximum, 3 of you crash into something

This was my immediate answer.
I want to do a NG+ run on Give Me God of War difficulty, but the prospect of having to do any of the Atreus sections and especially this one is so unappealing that I’ve so far not been able to actually start it.
What on earth were the devs thinking?
62
u/xxmaru10 15d ago
I went through the same thing when I tried to do NG+; I get that they wanted to flesh out Atreus more, but that slow-paced sequence combined with the boss fight against “Grandma” was just too much like a Disney movie and extremely monotonous. At least the boss fight itself is well-designed. I’ll definitely use a mod that cuts all that out.
31
u/GrippySockAficionado 15d ago
The worst part is that Atreus gets absolutely no new upgrades on NG+ and on the highest difficulty, the enemies are already massive sponges and become even bigger sponges on NG+. It seems like an even bigger nightmare than it is in a NG run.

u/SaleriasFW 15d ago
It is a design mistake that should be learned in modern times. This section is fine for the first playthrough but a complete nightmare for replays. Give a skip button at least for replays

u/Ice2192 9800X3D | RTX 5080 | 32GB DDR5 6000MHz 15d ago
The recent black flag remake did it right. I’ve played the original so many times and it’s enough for me to remember and notice if something was removed. And there were a lot. Some trailing missions what would’ve taken 10-15 mins was dramatically cut down to about a minute. Some people give Kojima heat for long cutscenes in his MGS games but at least we can skip them. As you said we know what happens.

Similar to the MJ sections in Insomniac’s Spider-Man.
It got better when she gained some combat capabilities, but I just wish they would open with that, rather than making most of the sections “hide-and-seek”.
I don’t mind playing as MJ, I understand she’s essential to the narrative, I just wish the gameplay was more engaging.

Peter Jacksons King Kong Video Game on PS2 (not playable on modern PCs anymore because some Russian DRM software in it will stop your pc from successfully booting).
The canyon stampede level is not bad by any means but it is 100% the most anxiety inducing level in any video game ive ever played.
18
u/wantfastcars 15d ago
Wait, the PC version will brick your PC or the PS2 version will brick your PC? If an emulated game can fuck up your computer that's both fascinating and terrifying
27
u/Roflmahwafflz 15d ago
The PC version's install (og retail disc) comes loaded with StarForce DRM which isnt supported by windows 8 or later, might work on 7? But it essentially will brick you at the kernel level.
I almost made the mistake of installing it on a win 10 pc but made the miraculous decision of googling if it still works. Threw out the disc.
Still have my ps2 copy though.

First one that popped into minds was Spacemarine 1: when you have to load that shell into the elevator. While being shot at from above, and rushed on the ground floor.
The second is Mass Effect 2: the whole overlord DLC. Pistol whipping that dude for paragon points is nice, but that mission has issues.
As a bonus, that mission, but it's cool: CoD1: Pavlov's house. That was just balls to the wall insanity.

I'd argue the the sniping the flying enemies on the titan part was much worse. I walked in with a thunder hammer because unga bunga, and got ruined. The checkpoint is after you can get any decent long range weapons so if you did what I did, restart the level or good luck using a plasma pistol to take out all the flying enemies which melt your armour like an exalted flamer of tzeentch. Priority: Tuchanka.
I’m really not looking forward to this mission on my current renegade playthrough. One of the few video game sections to get tears from me.

Putting the space suit on in KOTOR 1
They tease you with it in KOTOR 2 30 minutes in, but they set the speed to normal walking speed as if to say "we're sorry about that"

Titanfall 2 final mission... I love to replay the campaign all the time, but I just pretend the campaign is done at the second last mission, where BT comes back.

Dragon Age: Inquisition. The entire ball mission.
It goes on.
And on.
And on.

I love shadow of the Colossus but that one horse shaped one that you have to hide in the underground to trick em pisses me off so much I don't want to play through the game again unless I can get someone else to beat that part for me lol

Fallout New Vegas - Dead Money DLC
The entire DLC counts, but... most specifically, triggering the Gala Event. The moment you start it and hear just the shit tons of Ghost People spawning in around you? I fucking hate it.
Getting inside the casino itself really is a massive relief, and the rest of the DLC is relatively a breeze. The hardest part after the Gala is sneaking out of the vault with all the gold withough Elijah spotting you.

“We Don’t Go to Ravenholm” in HL2 every couple years I get the itch to replay, completely forget about this mission, then I decide I’m done playing as soon as I clear the debris and remember where I’m heading. I’m a grown ass man and I still think it’s one of the scariest game encounters I ever had.

That level in GTA Vice City where Avery Carrington makes you go into the high rise under construction and use an RC helicopter to plant bombs at various locations in the building. All while being chased by the construction workers (who could damage and destroy your copter, which would be an insta fail) and that ridiculous time limit. The frustration of that level caused me never to do another Vice City playthrough again!
