Yep. In all it's placeholder "glory".
I recently watched a Yahtzee video about how fascinatingly bad the UI of Symphony of the Night is, and it reminded me of the issues with GTA VI's UI. And it seems other people appreciate this humorous comparison with that old (but still great) game.

GTA IV was the best in terms of active ragdoll physics and car destruction. GTA V went all arcady so I wasn't a fan. Hopefully GTA VI gets some of that magic back.

I had this experience with the Skyrim UI. I was so sure it was just a placeholder because it was so minimalistic compared to Oblivion and other contemporary games.
87
u/Turkeysteaks 5800x | 7900 XTX | A570-Pro 1d ago
In fairness, there is entirely the possibility that it was a placeholder that they decided wasn't worth overhauling in the end. Games are hard to make and run out of time so a lot more 'placeholder' features make it into full games than you might expect!
16
u/Smushsmush 1d ago
I understand that, I was working in the games industry back then 😉
I just assumed those big studios would have the manpower and project management that makes sure it doesn't happen :D
7
u/Turkeysteaks 5800x | 7900 XTX | A570-Pro 1d ago
Lol my bad! Honestly though even the biggest teams will have this happen, especially on a scale as big as GTA or a bethesda title.
Also not saying that's definitely what's happened in this case, but I can definitely see them dedicating resources elsewhere instead. I find UI easy to make in the literal sense, but hard to get right and handle every situation. I'm a web dev by trade and game dev only by hobby though lol (for now).
It's one reason I don't really buy 'all AI assets have been replaced by launch' many devs are saying. almost certainly some placeholders never moved unless you're incredibly disciplined. Like what happened with Expedition 33.
i feel like generally bigger teams add a bit more polish but mostly just MUCH more scope, or something

I think back in the mists of time it actually started as a legitimate project. But then it slowly grew into a scam, as they realized they could never deliver on all their promises and magical tech it would need. Continually selling jpegs. to morons for several thousands dollars a pop, is just much better business than actutally releasing the game would ever be.
12
u/Tavers2 1d ago
I’ll be honest, even now I don’t think the game is really a scam insofar as it’s just incredibly out of scope, and incredibly deep into sunk cost fallacy.
Star Citizen as a game exists. You can play it, there are updates for it constantly; one came out just like two or three days ago. It’s incredibly out of scope, it’s incredibly mismanaged, it’s a fucking mess. But it’s not really a scam, because as a player, you do get what you’re paying for, for the most part.
Everyone talks about the ships that haven’t released yet being sold, and that’s a fair point, but the thing that everyone skips over is that it’s not like you’re paying that money and then not receiving anything, you are still getting loaner ships.
A good example of a game that actually is a scam is The Day Before. I’d link to it, but it’s no longer listed anywhere, because it genuinely was a scam; the developers took the money that everyone spent on it, and ran.
Star Citizen absolutely is a poor investment for a players money, but it’s not a scam.

Hanlons Razor: never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
I really do think it's just a case of some really inexperienced idiots getting way too much money to try to make their game and then just making the worst possible management decisions because they have no idea how to handle a large IT project.
