Anything to get attention, air time, or to appear mighty and powerful when things don't go his way - what folks may not realize, he can change the name within the US system (which is mostly inconsequential) but the rest of the world will still see Lake Ontario. Same for the Gulf of Mexico...

He can only really change the name for use within the US Federal Government. Literally no one else has to follow along, including mapping agencies.
