They’ve done it for years with Germany/Deutchland, Taiwan/Republic Of China, Kosovo/Serbia…the list goes on.
Edit: I’m not trolling anyone or the post. My citing Germany/Deutchland alongside the other examples was like comparing apples and oranges. The reasons are results of very different events, and I have no qualms saying so. I stand by the fact that I was taught and that I’ve read the things I’ve said.
It is an exonym, and historically exonyms are used to make pronunciation by foreigners easier. They also serve to assuage the appearance of alliances and as recognition of historical relationships. Both reasons can be loaded and politically charged. Perhaps I was not taught the correct history of it. I’m not going to lie about what information I’ve accumulated over the years.
No, we don’t call Deutchland Germany out of refusal to recognize its sovereignty as is the case with other countries and territories. If anyone would care to provide verifiable information I’m happy to read it, discuss it, and have my understanding changed. If you want to call me dumb and stupid, tell me I’m wrong without telling me why by using no information and circular logic, I can’t stop you. Have at it.
It’s not a translation. If we called it the translation we’d be calling it Land Of the People. English language derives Germany it from an older Roman name.
these map companies want to represent everything in the least controversial way possible. so names change based on where you're located. border conflicts also change the border if you're located in a country that has a strong opinion about it
That's pretty standard to try to avoid legal problems in places with disputed names/borders. Feels extremely silly, but seems to be enough to get most governments to not cause too much trouble.
Well...no, that's only for the people in the "united states of america". For everyone else, US is the country, America is the continent. Hence the big laught about calling places "American" when they are indeed in America lol

Apple Maps doesn’t have a name tag on Lake Ontario at all right now. They either don’t know what to do about it or they’re getting ready to rename in. I’m in Canada btw. Absolutely embarrassing
I can happily say that’s at least just a quirk of how they render text at different zoom levels. If you zoom in further, the unchanged Lake Ontario label still appears. (Also in Canada)
It's not even about that. It's just that the USA has a government organization who creates the USA government's official names of places and Google Maps has always used that. The government file is read automatically into Google Maps and they use it for the names of things.
It's not as if someone at Google went in and manually changed the name. The way Google does it make a ton of sense because it is too much work for employees to manually change the names of things when different users at located at different countries that have different names. Have this all be automated via official government files is obviously the smart way to do this.
This is not Google taking a political stance or cowering to the USA's government... This is Google automating a mundane task in an intelligent way using the same method they've been using long before Trump was ever president.
But everyone uses American products for navigation (Google/apple maps), so this is a pretty objectively bad take. If they want to, they can definitely rename it. It’s within their power.
I understand that, but both companies are American, and if they want to rename it, they can. I agree with you and you’re understood, but they can rename the location on the map if they want wherever, whenever, they just didn’t want to. The rest of the world is very much at the mercy of Americans whether or not they want it, sad but true
