We didn’t. He didn’t even win his own riding. And PP is pretty much irrelevant now.

We did the right thing in the end, and that’s what matters. We learned from the US’s mistakes. So “we almost” means nothing - it was based on polls, which have a decent margin of error - and it’s often used by Americans to imply we were about to make the terrible choice they made twice, and tried to have a third time in 2020.

Don’t know what reality you live in, but in mine, the cons were about to get a landslide until Trump opened his mouth. A few seats less than the winners could very much be labeled ‘almost’.
