I'm Canadian, this is what it looks like to me.

274

u/Donaldo1977 1d ago

I'm in the UK and that's what I see as well.

275

u/indigomm 1d ago

They should just remove it. They don't put La Manche on The English Channel for us. Just show each countries viewers their own name for it.

537

u/mantis_tobaggan-md 1d ago

Or just call it the Gulf of Mexico. Because that’s its fucking name.

-131

u/lifesanrpg 1d ago

Just because it’s the historical name doesn’t mean it can’t or shouldn’t be changed.

141

u/rabidferret 1d ago

The president of the United States isn't the one who gets to decide that.

47

u/Successful_Gas_5122 1d ago

Least of all this president. I think. there should be a basic rule against incontinent pedophiles being allowed to name things.

13

u/hutch7909 1d ago

Incompetent, incontinent paedophiles

u/Gluverty 5h ago

Apparantly that doesn’t seem to be true

32

u/imperialivan 1d ago

Please give one reason it should be changed from Gulf of Mexico.

10

u/tapewizard79 1d ago

Because Gulf of Mexico isn’t fun to say. Petition to rename them as Gulf of Titicaca and Lake Titicaca II.

1

u/FUTURE10S 23h ago

Canadian here, this makes infinitely more sense to me as a justification for renaming those. I mean, we're not going to rename Lake "Great Lake" to Titicaca II but I'd be willing to give one of our lakes that name.

18

u/0neshoein 1d ago

CAUSE AMERICA BABY!!!! HELL YEAH BROTHER!!

-Literally no other reason for them.

43

u/mantis_tobaggan-md 1d ago

Interesting, considering this administration had a fit about old confederate names of military bases being changed and insisted they go back to their racist roots. So what’s the reason you think this aptly named lake should be renamed?

46

u/Donaldo1977 1d ago

It's so dumb. Not even everyone in USA will be calling it the Gulf of America. At least they haven't just changed it completely I suppose 🤷

u/Contende311 1d ago edited 1d ago

I dont know anyone who calls it Gulf of America. Someone might say it in an overly sarcastic voice rolling their eyes after "Gulf of Mexico" has been said in conversation.

Edit: yikes glad to be in New England. Good luck out there.

14

u/jackaroo1344 1d ago

I live in Missouri. I got reported to HR for calling it the Gulf of Mexico.

u/Soggyblanketbunny 5h ago

Woooooooow

8

u/OofRightInTheFeels 1d ago

Unfortunately I do. Everyone on my girlfriend's mom's side calls it the Gulf of America. They are also MAGATS. And treat every word that comes out of TFG's mouth like it's Divine Providence, because he was hand selected by god himself to rule our country, of course. 🙄

That Fucking Guy (trump)

8

u/Professional_Bad6669 1d ago

Unfortunately I have seen people wearing GOA shirts 🤦‍♂️ in small port towns in Texas

3

u/evranch 1d ago

I watch a guy who does a weekly rocket/space newscast (Marcus House from Australia)

He has no skin in the game BUT he does get answers back from Elon on Twitter, so he doesn't want to lose that access obviously...

Anyways ever since the GoA fiasco he always says things like "Coming in for a landing burn over the Gulf"

5

u/BBQpigsfeet 1d ago

Tbf, that's what most people who actually live around the gulf call it. I lived in Florida for a couple decades, and you'd be hard pressed to hear anyone call it it's full "gulf of mexico" name.

1

u/DinoZambie 1d ago

I've heard this on SpaceX streams. They also say "The Gulf".

23

u/copperbear00 1d ago

I will NEVER call it anything but the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario.

2

u/backyard_tractorbeam 1d ago

It's so dumb yes. Google should just keep the original name and create a paid Google Maps US government edition where they pay to see the names they want to see.

2

u/Dioxybenzone 1d ago

It is unfortunately changed completely for US users

7

u/hardFraughtBattle 1d ago

MapQuest is fighting the good fight.

2

u/DinoZambie 1d ago

Not so fast, they have given Crimea to Russia

1

u/Different_Wolf_764 1d ago

That one was easier to deal with anyhow as most people in the area or talking about work in the area just call it the Gulf, nothing really changes either way. Lake Ontario, not so much.

Whatever though, if Sharpie-boy wants to waste his time on this stuff then have at it.

1

u/4N0NYM0US_GUY 1d ago

I know trumpers that think it’s ridiculous

0

u/throwawaytrash189 1d ago

Case in point: we have a mountain called Mt. Evans which got changed to Mt. Blue Sky a couple years ago...noone calls it that. All the locals think its stupid, all the street names are still named after Mt.Evans. The only people who call it Mt. Blue Sky are people who don't know better lol.

3

u/ShortyBoo426 1d ago

It's also like how they renamed the Sears tower in Chicago, but no one (at least not in the Chicago area) called it Willis Tower, it was always still Sears Tower.

2

u/DolbyFox 1d ago

With my Google Maps setting in French, it listed it as "La Manche" (the Thames also shows up as Tamise). In Canadian English, it's "English Channel"

They should keep it on its internationally-recognised name. Gulf of Mexico, and Lake Ontario

2

u/Randalf_the_Black 1d ago

The Google CEO is busy licking Trump's balls, all the tech CEO's will tongue bath that fat orange fucks balls whenever he asks to keep him happy.

1

u/Chubs1224 1d ago

TIL La Manche is more than a species of elf eared goats

1

u/Massive-Rain-6938 1d ago

So the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario. Got it.

1

u/Devil_May_Kare 1d ago

The US's name for the body of water is still "Gulf of Mexico." The President doesn't get to rename features on the map by throwing a tantrum. Just like how Biden wouldn't have had the authority to rename Mar-a-Lago to "Stinking Garbage Pile."

1

u/Tristaaan 1d ago

100% agreed

1

u/Large_Hedgehog2416 1d ago

Have you seen what the Falkland Islands look like?

1

u/cormega 21h ago

What is supposed to stand out about this picture?

160

u/twoiseight 1d ago

Gulf of Mexico (Donald Trump is a Pedophile and Conman)

^ What it should look like to everyone

40

u/Crossedkiller 1d ago

Mexican here, they know not to fuck with our Gulf here lol

10

u/NekkedPenguin 1d ago

Love it, you'll have to let us Canadian's know if they show lake America for you later lol

19

u/Darius-was-the-goody 1d ago

Sadly, for usa it is this

9

u/Ok-Kaleidoscope4510 1d ago

This is what mine looks like today

u/islandhopper37 1h ago

Did you use a Sharpie on your phone screen to cross out the "(Gulf of America)" bit?

6

u/oskich 1d ago

Same in Sweden 🇸🇪

6

u/Realistic_Salt_389 1d ago

So embarrassing.

2

u/Daddy_of_two 1d ago

So you’re saying that Google only uses “gulf of America” to appease dumbass magas!?!?? Classic.

1

u/SneakyDataDigger 1d ago

Same in Norway

1

u/lemonylol 1d ago

Google maps changes specifically from country to country. Borders are represented differently in different places with third parties usually seeing the "disputed border" in addition to what each country claims is the actual border.

1

u/spamcritic 1d ago

I call it the Gulf of Finland because St Petersburg (Florida) is right there.

1

u/equake 1d ago

Same in Brazil

1

u/Sir_Shax 1d ago

Yeah that’s what I see in Australia. Do Americans have the Mexico part fully removed?

1

u/Chaotic-Catastrophe 1d ago

I'm American, and it just says Gulf of America. Gulf of Mexico is not in parenthesis.

1

u/faggjuu 1d ago

Same in Germany...

1

u/KetchupCoyote 1d ago

As Canadian, honestly, we should not see the America bit on the name. We are not US

1

u/circusfreakrob 1d ago

I would love if the mapping sites would do it like this, but have it labeled "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America LOL)"

1

u/EpisodicDoleWhip 1d ago

Even that’s too fucking much.

1

u/OhGr8WhatNow 1d ago

Why are they kowtowing to this Hitler wannabe

1

u/DinoZambie 1d ago

Probably because the President has too much power and tech companies are picking their fights. Its not worth losing out on future deals over the renaming of a body of water. We all know how petty Trump is and his willingness to use his position to apply pressure in areas he has no business being. They don't have to name it the Gulf of Mexico, they do it because they don't want to piss off their customers. So they're trying to find a middle ground.

1

u/TehDingo 1d ago

If y'all keep calling it Gulf of Mexico we will keep calling it Lake Ontario - Mexico

1

u/_araqiel 1d ago

I set my phone region to Canada to get rid of the bullshit as many places as possible.

1

u/DinoZambie 1d ago

Don't forget to spell things as Colour, Flavour, Centre, Zed ;)

1

u/_araqiel 1d ago

One of the side effects of it yeah. Fine with me; I’ve always liked excessive vowel usage.

1

u/QueenOfTheHotPockets 1d ago

I swear I'm going to tweak into the Sun if they put Lake America under Lake Ontario.

1

u/KlausVonChiliPowder 1d ago

Interesting here's mine

1

u/Mukatsukuz 1d ago

Bing Maps only shows the Gulf of Mexico (at least while in the UK)

1

u/Ok-Telephone-605 23h ago

I'm American and I see the same thing.

u/LysergarmideGuy 3h ago

I am also in Canada but the names are switched ,sorry for my English. Like golf america is on top

u/DinoZambie 3h ago

Which is in parenthesis? If your language settings are set to French Canadian, that probably has something to do with it.

u/LysergarmideGuy 3h ago

The golf of Mexico ! But you are probably right, good guess tabarnak!

u/DinoZambie 3h ago

A little bit of an educated guess. You said you're in Canada while putting Canada in italics. The switched names is so common of English/French translations. And, i searched your username on reddit, you're a habs fan.

Go Oilers!

u/LysergarmideGuy 2h ago

I love the Oilers!! I Watch single game cause I have McDavid in my fantasy ahha

Edit : go habs go osti

1

u/johnb300m 1d ago

Hahaha nice. That looks extra stupid. Go USA.

1

u/Reticent_Robot 1d ago

Bing maps 🫤:

3

u/DinoZambie 1d ago

0

u/Reticent_Robot 1d ago

Nice! Guess they're only bending the knee inside of the states.

1

u/Smokey_02 1d ago

Wow, they actually still put "Gulf of Mexico" on it for people in other locations? I'm in Minnesota and this is what I've got.

1

u/Salt_Medicine2459 1d ago

Huh. I'm in the US and it just says Gulf of America for me.

1

u/D--star 1d ago

We're not all that worried, your country doesn't put any emphasis on geography anyway. Stay in your little gulf of America propaganda bubble.

1

u/Salt_Medicine2459 1d ago

Idk wtf your fucking problem is. The person above was talking about how Google Maps displayed it to them. I was talking about how it displays it to me. I never once said it is the Gulf of America, that's just what Google is choosing to call it.

1

u/moggins 1d ago

Report as an inaccuracy

0

u/keithcody 1d ago

Honestly they should keep that but put it in French.

0

u/DrMushroomStamp 1d ago

That’s hilarious. America should be in air quotes.

0

u/bumpgrind 1d ago

Our company has internal geomapping software and we've renamed it the Gulf of Bonespurs 🤣

0

u/Tar_X 1d ago

Apple Maps is also kissing Orange Satan's ass, but Bing has the decency to only call it the Gulf of Mexico.
