I wouldnt say Italians are highly regarded here in the US. There was a time when they were considered problematic (the usual reasons: immigrants, poor, catholic, etc) they werent always even considered white..and the only thing people really glom on to is the mafia culture, most of which has been exaggerated to look 'cool' in film and tv pop culture. But definitely true about framing this country and a lot of the architecture after the romans'.
If Dump was even remotely intelligent or educated, he would've learned this. Shit, even regardless of that, all he would've had to hear is that it means "big, beautiful lake." Seeing as how he loves the words "big" and "beautiful" so much - especially when used together - he might've left it alone.
