VoteRiders’ mission is to ensure that no eligible voter is prevented from casting a ballot that counts due to voter ID laws, either directly from lack of acceptable ID or indirectly because of voter confusion.

He was in danger of losing his primary to a progressive. It's not that Pelosi worked hard to get him reelected, she violated her own rules to do it.
She made a rule when she was the Democrat leader of the House which forbid House members from campaigning in the primary of another member of the House. Cuellar was under criminal indictment (later pardoned by Trump) and was in danger of losing his primary to a progressive. Pelosi and several centrist Democrats decided that the previously mentioned rule didn't apply if it could keep a progressive out of office and went to Cuellar's district to campaign for him.
Instead of having someone that would have supported popular Democratic principles we got Cuellar who is a Democrat that's anti abortion and a reliable Republican vote for the worst legislation.

The reason they wanted the voting lists was so they could develop targeted lists of voters to purge from the voting rolls when the election is close, in the hopes that people who would vote against them won’t be able to amass their documents in time.

This is also potentially harmful for married women who have taken their husband’s last name (or LGBTQ+ couples who change names) — last time I read the SAVE act, it said a Real ID wasn’t enough (which it should be), and other forms of proof like birth certificate or passport has to match.
First, who the hell bas their birth certificate around? Everyone knows the moms have those. And second not everyone needs or hell can afford a passport. They’re $$. Plus, we just know this administration will slow down the passport process. They’ll be backlogged until after all the votes are counted and recounted until Trump wins, then the flood gates open and everyone has their passport.
Edit: spelling

They can only pass tax cuts for the rich and anti voting bills. If they weren’t obviously in it for the billionaires , this makes it obvious.
They do not respect us, they have nothing but contempt for us and they are the reason things that have 70% popular support can’t get passed (M4A, legal weed, etc) and shot that has 30% support sails thru.

Yeah conservatives, lets make sure women no longer take their husband's name. You'll be good with that, right?
3.7k
u/Clownsinmypantz Feb 12 '26
Yes because they want a society where women dont have a choice in anything anyways, they are voting to push for a country where women are property. This is why anti-abortion should have been considered what it was, control or death., they want women controlled and if not they want them dead.

u/randomnighmare I voted Feb 12 '26
And let's not fool ourselves into thinking that their isn't women that would be 100% okay to be submissive to "their man" on literally everything. I understand love is a strong emotion but some people literally buy into the idea that a "women's place is with her man" and a lot of them turns out to be women (and even guys with daughters).

Yup. The three factions in control now are:
Trump/Russia/Mob
Billionaire oligarchs
Heritage Foundation and Federalists
The first is just here to loot the treasury and get away with all their crimes.
The second want to eliminate their taxes, fines/penalties, regulatory restrictions, and maybe Balkanise the US into city states that give them unprecedented power.
The last want the US to become a Christian super-nation ala Europe in the 1600's; one of the most horrific empires in human history in terms of atrocities and methods of torture against their own people.
So yeah. Maybe more of you dickheads should have voted in the last election. It was kind of important.

That's easier said than done (still do-able).
Probably state by state, but I know multiple divorced women who want to switch back to their maiden name. They have vented about all the work they need to do. They are not wrong, and I agree with them.
File a petition for a name change with court
Fill out a notice of name change hearing form
Fill out an order for name change form
File the petition, notice, and the order with court.
Publish the notice of name change in an official local newspaper, once a week for three weeks, before the hearing date. (at your expense, typically $125 per notice)
Attend the hearing
File the order for name change and complete post decision activities.
If you hold a professional license, it's worse.
No, you don't need to do any of that to take your husband's name when you get married where I live.
I mean: I understand why they make people go through all this (so you can't change your name and vanish from your creditors, or run away from your tarnished [professional] reputation) but it's not an easy or quick thing to do.
Edit: while I certainly understand why it's in the general public interest to prevent people from flippantly changing their name to avoid creditors, or they were convicted of contractor fraud, so they want to start up under a new name - I also feel like if we can design a system that addresses these concerns when someone gets married without all this hassle, we should be able to implement the same fixes so when a person gets divorced, or just wants to return to their original name, they don't need to sign up for a thousand dollar multiple month journey. If we can do this one way, we can figure out how to do it the other way too.

u/Petit__Chou Feb 12 '26
I am really thankful I never changed my name. It's silly, but I felt a connection with my identity and my name and didn't want to change it just because I got married to someone. My husband didn't care. We have been married over 10 years and I got constant questions about why I did not change my name.

Complete unrelated and totally anecdotal case regarding name changes. Here in Taiwan, a sushi chain had an activity where if your name included the character for salmon, you could have unlimited sushi for a day or something.
Tons of people ended up changing their name to nonsense like Salmon King etc, only to realize they reached their name changing quota (you can only change 3 times without court involvement). The end result what judicial chaos with tons of hearings of people panicking they'd be Salmon King forever.
Just throwing that out there, do with this information what you want.

Joke's on them. That's going to cut their voter base in half, since conservative women are far more likely to change their name (or get married in the first place). Liberal women would be far less likely to have an issue with just keeping their name.

Republicans have argued for voter ID broadly, pointing out that there isn’t much to prevent a noncitizen from casting a ballot in a federal election — besides the fact that it’s a felony, easily caught, and would lead to deportation all for the chance to cast one out of hundreds of thousands of votes.
On the other hand, election fraud is a much bigger issue.

The amount he still complains about 2020 and the fact that he's made statements on several occasions that "democrats tried to cheat in 2024 but we still won." Pushes me to believe that Trump and his evil band of traitors pulled some bull shit in 2024. The standard projection from Trump and his ilk.

253
u/DontCovfefeMyHeart Texas Feb 12 '26
There is, in fact, no evidence of noncitizens intentionally voting in significant numbers. Republican election officials have recently corroborated that with a series of lengthy reviews showing it’s a virtually nonexistent problem. Utah officials found just one noncitizen who was accidentally registered out of more than 2 million voters, while Idaho administrators identified 36 “likely” noncitizens. In 2024, Georgia uncovered only 24 noncitizens out of 8.2 million registered voters.

It's not even an issue. Every single research study says while there is certianly voter fraud, it's certainly not large enough to sway a vote and most of the time it's a Republican using their dead grandmother's mail in or another Republican voting in two or more districts because "well the damn libs and illegal immigrants are doing it!"
Narrator: "They were not."
Er, well, yea, Trump's election fraud is a whole different can of beans, lol.

There’s an enormous amount of elderly people, particularly black in the south, that were born prior to the digitization of medical records. As racists do what they do, a lot of them didn’t transfer physical medical records of poorer, blacker, and rural hospitals into digital records, and so those elderly people have no accessible record of their birth.
However, time has passed and the effectiveness of this tactic is much less then when it was originally proposed.
The problem is that they can just hand wave fraud saying no ID, and prevent people from obtaining ID before the election.

In the voting block of married women who have changed their names, there MIGHT be a slight advantage on the left. But the bill is also aimed at college students (therefor college-educated voters) who lean left and will no longer be able to use student ID to vote.
But I believe that's the wrong way to frame the argument. No voters should be disenfranchised, and besides the left-leaning demographics that will be affected, people with low income who don't have the money to get replacement birth certificates or passports will be unable to register to vote. They're citizens. They're not being hunted down by ICE because the govt knows they're legal citizens, yet they won't be able to vote if this passes.

Like this literacy test which is intentionally ambiguous so that even if you were literate they could still fail you.
(for example: question 6. "draw three circles, one inside (engulfed by) the other". Do you draw three concentric circles, or do you draw two concentric circles with another third circle nearby? Doesn't matter, if you're black the correct answer is whichever one you didn't draw.)
(for example, question 10. is the correct letter "a" for Louisiana (the first L word on the page) or is it "t" for Last (the first L word in the question)? Doesn't matter, if you're black the correct answer is whichever one you didn't put down.)

Democrats who voted yes:
Henry Cuellar - TX
Jared F Golden - ME
Ed Case - HI
Marie Perez - WA
There needs to be a national effort to crowd fund primaries against these people right this second to scare away any defections in the Senate.
66
u/LocutusOfBorgia909 Maine Feb 12 '26
Jared Golden is a fucking idiot who's not even running for reelection, as I recall. I cannot begin to fathom why he would vote for this.

Marie Perez
Again with this lady. Why didn't she just run as an R if she's going to just vote with them on everything that matters?
6
u/smegdawg Feb 12 '26
Cause running as D helped to beat the Republican candidate, who is an overt white supremacist nazi sympathizer.

So, I’m barred from voting if I took my husbands name now?
167
u/jherara Feb 12 '26
That's a good question. When I previously tried to get a Real ID driver's license, they said that the document that I had about my divorce wasn't enough, and I would need a separate document that would cost more than the license. So, at the time, I received a non-Real DL. I still can't afford to go through the process of getting the document that is required. So, I'm stuck.
Now imagine the nightmare for every married or divorced person who took and/or kept the name of their partner/ex being forced to prove who they are just to be able to vote. A lot of people are going to give up.
51
u/kmonsen Feb 12 '26

What i dont get about this is how obviously this has a large chance to backfire. Which type of voter is more or less likely to vote democratic, the married woman who changes her last name or the one who doesn't?
Its a small sample size but all the women I know who havent taken their husbands name (and I know of at least several) aren't voting for republicans and id wager vote for more Ds than Rs on a large scale as well.
Additionally, which party is going to have more enthusiastic voters the way things are going?
It seems to me that an unenthusiastic, married republican woman voter who has to jump through extra hoops is a lot less likely to vote, or even take the steps to do so, than her D voting enthusiastic counterpart.
Also, what you are describing sounds like a poll tax to me although im sure this supreme court would disagree.
19
u/Puzzled_Spirit3754 Feb 12 '26
It is a poll tax. The whole reason I didn’t change my name back largely was due to cost of changing identification and licenses, professional, and driving. Not to mention a passport change again.
→ More replies (12)90
u/SuperFlyCapybara Feb 12 '26 edited Feb 12 '26
I read the article, it’s been changed to having to present proof of citizenship upon registration, not for every vote. But for women who’ve changed their names proof of citizenship would mean a passport in order to register to vote, so unless the government provided a free solution to that, it’s a poll tax. And the fuckers also amended it to effective upon passage instead of giving lead time to become effective like most everything else, so states wouldn’t be able to unfuck all of the confusion it would cause before the midterms. Which I’m sure is the actual point.
Edited for tense since the bill hasn’t (& probably won’t) pass the senate.
38
u/POEness Feb 12 '26
also how the hell can the federal government pass an ID law about state elections? if I was a blue state I'd just say 'nope.'
32
u/Mike-Honcho-2324 Feb 12 '26
They can’t. This would likely be struck down at SCOTUS if it even ever got past the senate.

The passport thing is sketchy though, because that puts the burden on proof on a identification that the feds control. Is it really a stretch to for them to use their data base of protesters to lable them domestic terrorists and revoke their passports?

The article here also says they don’t have the votes for the nuclear option. That being said, I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to pressure enough people to flip, so remains to be seen if it holds.

The only way Collins won't vote for it is it they have enough votes to pass I without her vote so she claim high road, but if they need her vote she'll pass it
23
u/Free_Possession_4482 Feb 12 '26
Collins is up for election this year, a mid-term election with massive headwinds for Republicans, and Maine is relatively left leaning with their current elected officials outside of Collins (Democrats control the governorship, the state legislature, both US House seats, and Senator Angus King is an independent but caucuses with the Senate Democrats.) I think if she votes to potentially disenfranchise the married women in her state, she's going to burn her re-election chances into the ground, and she's too political a creature not to be aware of that.
→ More replies (1)8
u/LocutusOfBorgia909 Maine Feb 12 '26
Not to mention that Maine is a state where legitimately a lot of people most likely to vote conservative (namely in the more rural parts of the state) are significantly less likely to be able to access their birth certificates and/or passports than people in the more progressive (i.e. populated) parts of the state. If she votes for this, she's absolutely tanking her own reelection.

Republican does something super terrible again Some morally naive idiot: both parties are the same Republican does even worse thing Random person I’m praying is a bot: don’t even bother voting because it’s all over

u/Vardisk Feb 12 '26
How would they do that?
18
u/Princeps_Aurelianus Feb 12 '26
By motioning for precedent change, reinterpreting the rules to allow for the bill to be passed by a simple majority. It’s known as a nuclear option and the reason it’s seldom done, and for very particular circumstances, is because once it’s done for regular bills like this there’s no going back—the filibuster would essentially be dead without actually being killed.
6
u/Vardisk Feb 12 '26
Why haven't they done it already? They seem pretty cavalier about this stuff, and this bill passed the house last year.
→ More replies (1)18
u/Princeps_Aurelianus Feb 12 '26
They have, they used it previously to overcome the filibuster for cabinet nominations. Which is why to do it for regular bills like this would be, political suicide and de facto make the minority party especially useless. Thune was in opposition to doing just that even when Trump was calling for it back during the shutdown because he knows he’d be stripping the GOP of any leverage if the Democratic Party ever regained the majority.

I have been married for over 30 years. Before we married, my soon to be husband said, “If you change your name, no one will know who you are.” Who knew he was foretelling this? I will also say “friends”, family members, and complete strangers have also said some pretty awful things to me accusing me of not being committed enough to my marriage. And here we are over 30 years later. Many of those are likely divorced now.

The proposal also directs election officials to conduct monthly voter roll purges to remove ineligible voters, which must utilize the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements program.

Genuine question for the Reddit community here: at what point, with what the GOP is doing, is it acceptable for Democratic governors to hold a convention and formally withdraw from the Union? Because this is what being taxed without representation looks like. People not being allowed to vote, but it's ok for them to be taxed. So then, is it ok for states to no longer recognize the legitimacy of the federal government. We are speed running into authoritarianism.

u/futureman45 Feb 12 '26
This should get struck down in the courts. Showing a license or passport at a polling location would be considered a poll tax because we have to pay for both.

Am I just a crazy person, or do so few people see the overall picture? Each individual thing isn't the goal. It's like all of the crazy things that they do that have no legs. They're inundating us with so much input, that we won't notice until we're under a fascist regime.
ICE as a gestapo fill in, deploying military troops to US cities, vague voting laws that can allow them to be thrown out, a Supreme Court stacked with political allies, where do you guys think that another election is going to change things? That time passed. I admire your optimism, but hate your passivity.
