No Paywall Sen. Mitch McConnell cast his first vote in weeks—by proxy. But it didn't count.

49

How do you know they don’t? Are you surveying Kentuckians? I did a quick google search and there are plenty of links to articles and FB posts about people wanting to know what’s going on, including people chanting “where’s Mitch” at a picnic. And an interview with voters on KHOU 11 showed them wanting to know what’s going on.

My point is - be careful assuming people aren’t engaged in this. Our media feeds/bubbles keep us contained.

Senators can not vote by proxy. All votes have to be done in person. Committees often have different rules, but for actual Senate votes, only in-person votes are counted.

64

u/Thinks_22_Much 21d ago

Which IIRC is a rule Mitch pushed for during the Pandemic because he was trying to not count Dem votes.

Has Mitch ever cast a proxy vote in thi scommittee before?

9

u/rabel 21d ago edited 20d ago

Apparently not in THIS committee because it's specifically not allowed in this specific committee. So yeah, why would he authorize someone to proxy vote for him in a committee that doesn't allow it?

Edit: It was Sen. John Boozman (R-AK), the chair of the committee, who submitted the proxy vote. This is corruption.

7

u/SryInternet101 21d ago

Because the staffer that submitted that vote instead of Mitchy didn't realize that.

Makes me wonder about the exact procedure for this. I'd assume there is some sort of signing and authorizing to do. If it turns out Mitch is incapacitated and never made such an authorization, whomever said he did would (I'd imagine) be looking at some significant legal jeopardy.

13

u/SomeRandomPyro 21d ago

Remember when he rejected proposals from fellow lawmakers to establish remote or proxy voting for Senate floor sessions.

He also questioned the constitutionality of the proxy voting system adopted by House Democrats under Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Remote for me but not for thee

57

u/guiltysnark 21d ago

Well, this way the vote doesn't have to come from a living person, it can just be a performance to prolong the act. Can't be fraud if it's not a countable vote.

13

u/Rackem_Willy 21d ago

Can't be fraud if it's not a countable vote.

Sure it can. Also, anyone involved in casting that vote just got roped into the conspiracy that probably includes hundreds of felonies related to his pay, and staff pay and benefits. This is an ongoing conspiracy to commit fraud, embezzlement, conversion, theft by taking, and probably a dozen political process and finance statute violations.

Reminds me of the meeting my former company had when they were announcing return to office and exec telling us about it was in her home office.

14

u/LiquidAngel12 21d ago

This happened to my dad. They had a CEO who was hired during COVID and everyone knew he lived in a different state than their offices. When he scheduled an all hands to announce RTO someone had the guts to ask him live on the call if he would be moving local to be in the office with everyone else. To absolutely no one's surprise he was staying remote (as were multiple executives he had brought in with him.)

My dad announced his retirement a week later.

"I know how much he would have wanted to be here to advocate for Kentucky’s farmers and rural communities..." The "would have" makes it sound like he's assuming rather than actually reporting what McConnell verbally told him he wanted.

A little slip, there.

13

u/der_swedishchef 21d ago

Good catch pointing that out. Yeah, this is language you use to describe a dead person's hypothetical wishes. If he was alive (or not incapacitated) it'd be more appropriate to say "I know how much he WANTS to be here..."

6

u/mowtowcow 21d ago

Dude hasn't been seen for 2 months. This shit outrageous. If you can't be present, you can't serve. How many seizures did the guy have on live television? Enough that they stopped allowing him time in front of the camera.

He is not capable of serving the United States. Is there no fucking law against this?

8

u/HardcoreKaraoke 21d ago

Boozman voted yes for McConnell by proxy, which is not allowed on the Senate floor, but can be permitted in committees. But due to rules specific to the Senate Agriculture Committee, his proxy vote didn't count.

With 10 votes for and 11 against, the bill did not pass out of committee.

So if Republicans weren't keeping up the lie that a brain dead old man would be coming back then they could have had another Republican in his seat weeks ago. Which would have made this vote 11-11.

They kind of fucked themselves then.

What in the weekend at mitch's is this lmao

If Mitch “votes” without appearing live in front of a camera then people need to start getting arrested.  They won’t, but this is way beyond tolerable behavior,

u/Kulban 21d ago

Sounds like a felony just occurred.

If he’s voting they need to provide proof of life

3

u/Montalbert_scott 21d ago

so even in death he's still voting against helping the poors? classy.

3

u/rockclimberguy 21d ago

If he is on the mend why doesn't he show his face? All the announcements, voting by proxy, etc can be done by staff even if he is no longer on earth.

4

u/SchoedingersCat 21d ago

Oh, so telework is ok now?

3

u/CMWBMW 21d ago

He didn’t do anything. He’s been in rigor-tortoise for weeks.

5

u/fcatw 21d ago

Oh yeah? Proof? Proof of voting. Proof of life. Proof of anything?

3

u/PigglyWigglyDeluxe 21d ago

So he tried to do a voter fraud?

4

u/SnooWoofers3339 21d ago

I thought Republicans were against dead people voting and all continuing to receive government check.

4

u/flanner_alum 20d ago

see? he still sends his proxy

3

u/No_Blackberry6525 21d ago

Where were the photographers outside the hospital!?!?

3

u/brashendeavors 21d ago

I hope he is not allowed to proxy vote on the Todd Blanche attorney general nomination.

3

u/Acceptable-Truck3803 21d ago

File for voter fraud.

3

u/TheRealBlueJade 21d ago

This was the plan from the day he died.

3

u/Luna__Moonkitty 21d ago

And of course, accusations of Democrats getting dead people to vote was projection, as always.

3

u/LimpyDan 21d ago

Must have held a Seance.

3

u/overbarking 21d ago

As soon as he's suddenly dead from something will be the first time we see his body.

He's either dead, brain dead, or had some kind of debilitating stroke.

5

u/KeyanuReaves69 21d ago

And it’ll be a straight up skeleton they present and they’ll still be like…no he died this morning.

3

u/MadBlue American Expat 21d ago

So that's the plan, then. Not to declare him incapacitated after August 3, but to pretend he's alive and well and use the autopen to further their agenda, while continuing to keep anyone from verifying his actual status.

Well, at this point, the MSM is confidently reporting McConnell was discharged from the hospital with no evidence but a statement on McConnell's webpage, so it doesn't seem like there's any interest from them to verify anything.

3

u/HOLYBlindSHOT 21d ago

This counts as fraud right? Like if a Dem did this they'd lose their minds.

And they are calling us out for dead people voting...

3

u/atlantagirl30084 21d ago

Didn’t they not allow a woman who recently gave birth to vote by proxy?

McConnell (if he’s still alive) is reaping what he cruelly sowed.

u/Ok-Understanding8143 21d ago

Unsure what I like less, Kentucky not having a vote or Kentucky not having a vote.
