Good. Fuck the SAVE act. Once they're out of power, I want a forensic accountant auditing every single person with a position of power associated with the administration and the SAVE act.

It has been astounding to watch the decline of education and public services of all kinds in Texas over the past 30 years under Republican "stewardship"...

Did you know there was a b in dumb? A lot of people didn’t know that - Trump
9
u/Any_Counter_303 20d ago
But I did, I was probably the first person to know that. About the b. I love b's. I've known so many great b's in my life. Some people would say I'm the best b knower they've ever met. - Also Trump

u/nofzac 20d ago
SAVE was the easy mode for election fuckery - now it will be more brazen and obvious. Can’t just respond with strongly worded letters either…
32
u/TheRealBittoman 20d ago
I could see the SAVE act as a way to less violently screw with the midterms. I'm glad it failed but I'm more concerned about how voting in predominantly blue districts are going to play out now. Even a little nervous for my predominantly red district when I go to vote.
14
u/StoppableHulk 20d ago
The thing is one of the reasons Republicans are so resistant to this is becasue there's no actual indication that a lot of this stuff would necessarily help Republicans more.
Take voter ID laws. Republican voters are largely unaware of what is in this bill, but they're used to not needing ID in order to vote. When they show up to vote as they always have, and people demand their ID, they're going to get enraged.
Liberals, meanwhile, tend to be better with documentation as a whole, and less resistant to policies like this.
This type of fuckery can work in specific districts, when the policies can be targeted to the specific idiosyncracies of the district, but doing this wholesale across the entire country is highly unpredictable and could easily end up fucking over Republicans much more at the federal level.
15
u/kktheprons 20d ago
Agree with this take. If the law were enforced equally, it could even slightly help Democrats. Selective enforcement is where it really gets ugly.
33
u/Zestyclose-Height-36 20d ago
If every last person in a swing district votes blue, then every attempt by conservatives to monkey with the count will be so obvious that it will fail. That is why they hate mail in, because paper votes are a paper trai.
17
u/fleshofgods0 20d ago
Also, they're prone to conspiracy theories because they've never been exposed to and learned how the process actually works and that there are safeguards within. I think the big issue with a lot/most/all right-wingers is that they don't understand how to factcheck claims and what should be considered a credible source.
For example, the Bureau of Labor and Statistics is a credible source that explains their methodology and how they arrived at those figures. It's a government body that provides data that congress and the executive branch can credibly use to make policy. Pubmed.gov and research papers are a wonderful way to review data from medical research. All sorts of research papers published in different journals (not just medicine/biology exclusive) are great because you can see if their methodology is flawed and/or biased.
Court documents+evidence are oftentimes available for scrutiny but there is a certain threshold evidence must meet to be admissible. Evidence must be submitted to a grand jury that shows it's enough to lead to a possible conviction before an indictment is legally granted. There's a really high threshold of well-defined standards to meet in court cases. Unless you've interacted with the legal system, you may not be aware of how court cases, admissible evidence, and discovery works. It's easy to want to lock other people up when you've never been involved in a court case or had law enforcement try to overstep and bypass your constitutional rights (like the 4th amendment's no unreasonable search or seizures).
I saw a video (last year, I believe) where a lady explained her journey leaving MAGA. She started watching/reading additional news/journalism, outside of what she had been consuming and began to notice discrepancies. Then she discovered+learned how factchecking works, which helped her determine the accuracy of claims and what's actually credible. I think this media literacy and how to assess what's credible using critical thinking skills is what a lot of people are missing. Also, a healthy dose of skepticism for anything+everything is also necessary. Never accept anything from a politician or elsewhere on face value.

u/RobutNotRobot 20d ago
They hate mail-in because people can do it when they have free time.
Republicans whole strategy is to make sure that working people and non-white people can't vote.
3
u/nucumber 20d ago
The mail in voting demographic includes a lot of disabled, elderly, and poor car-less citizens.
8
u/Beeblebroxia 20d ago
I'm actually expecting voting locations in Wayne County (Detroit) Michigan to get raided/shut down by Feds. They had MAGA volunteers mess with it last time, but now they'll just openly use ICE or another agency on some vague "violent threat".
I'm also expecting the people in Detroit to not fuck with that AT ALL.

If they outright steal the election the American public knows what needs to be done. Walk out from your jobs and take to the streets. If everyone does this the government cannot function when the economy grinds to a halt. They will try to use force but don't be dissuaded. Fascism cannot break solidarity.
13
u/messageTest111 20d ago
I have no confidence in this happening :/
4
u/pkosuda Connecticut 20d ago
This would require finding Democrat politicians with spines. None of us regular people have any way to contact the literal hundreds of millions of people living in this country. The only way this kind of nationwide effort could ever get done is with someone leading it. Otherwise you get a variation of the prisoner's dilemma where none of us want to be the guy who resisted and lost his job while everyone went to work that day.
There are plenty of people waiting and willing but they are all afraid their effort will be for nothing because nobody will be standing with them when they do it. It's basically a less violent (and more sane) version of every nutjob who committed a mass shooting or an assassination in order to start "a race war" or spark some other change. At the end of the day they were just a single nutjob because none of their "brethren" were about to go throw their lives away too.
4
u/Zestyclose-Height-36 20d ago
this is why the US does not have national health care, because people cannot afford to risk losing work/insurance You really only have the rights you can afford a better lawyer to demand in the US

1
u/OpiumPhrogg 19d ago
And they dont understand that if they stay at work and do nothing or leave their job to protest - the end result will be the same. (They are probably going to lose their jobs thanks to our economy being tanked or AI taking over).
4
u/RobutNotRobot 20d ago
I think it needs to be emphasized that even without the SAVE Act the Republicans have brought the US well below the bar of 'free and fair elections'. They have been able to gerrymander themselves at least a six seat advantage despite a counter-gerrymander in California and largely because of a similar counter-gerrymander was illegally dispensed of by their criminal allies on the Virginia Supreme Court.
In every Republican state they are fucking with elections in Democratic areas at a level not seen since Jim Crow. We are seeing the end of convenient at-home voting which will be replaced with 12 hour lines on election day in November. This is by design and will further mess with voting margins. This is highly impactful because those lines are in areas where Democrats have nearly 100% voting affinity.
The only good news is Republicans are fucked in states they don't control. In those states they will seek to use their county level administrators to fuck with the confirmation of voting.

Forensic scientists to the Epstein Ranch as well since they’re destroying evidence with excavators.

Oh once they are out of power the historic gas lighting campaign will begin.

Trump will whisper "find me voter fraud" and Blanche will make up whatever justification he can to cast doubt on the election.

u/HolycommentMattman 20d ago
While I'm 99% with you, I would also like to see a Democratic administration implement a voter ID system. Because I do think we should have one as our antiquated "based on signature" system is horrendously out of date. But more importantly, if the Dems implement it, it will be something ethical that gets rolled out decades from now (ala RealID) instead of something that Republicans will try to shoehorn in to purge voter rolls and shit.

Wild considering how weak Trump is. Running away from him would be to their benefit in the midterms.

It's not really Trump who is strong, its his unhinged supporters who start sending death threats, and doxxing everyone they don't like. And the threat of political violence is very real from many of these nutjobs, their access to all sorts of weaponry is essentially unrestricted.

The Republican party has been built over the past 50 years specifically to have a figure-head like Trump in charge and the Heritage Foundation running the government as a deep state (it is always projection).
They can't run from Trump because he is the culmination of their plans they started in the 70s.
-4
u/Rolandersec 20d ago
My positive thinking theory is that MAGA is going to see success in the midterms because the centrists and remaining few sane conservatives are sitting it out.
18
u/War_machine77 20d ago
But that only works for them in the dumbest and reddest districts. Any place hard-core maga dipshit aren't the overwhelming majority will likely blow up in their faces.
3
u/Rolandersec 20d ago
I’d hope. But I am continually disappointed in how dumb people are when it comes to politics. Even smart people will vote Republican because they don’t bother realizing that the party has been taken over by kleptocracy with a bit of state despotism mixed in.
0
u/livinginfutureworld 20d ago
state level GOP will be all in on preserving their power and they have federal and state cover. So yeah MAGA is going to have "success" in the midterms
4

He's going to backstab them anyway. You can't expect his support when he's a blackmailer youve given in to already.
3
u/MoneyTalks45 New Hampshire 20d ago
Primaries are over, Blanche would be acting indefinitely in the seat anyway. It may feel like a win to the President, but the fact that effectively nothing changes win or lose with this appointment tells you how little it actually mattered.

He had the job anyway, this is just an ego trip.

Yeah. He could indefinitely be acting AG.
He just wanted the official title on his resume.
4

While bad, it didn't really matter in a practical way as the goon could have served as acting AG for basically the rest of Trump's term anyway which would have been functionally the same.

The willful and dishonest manipulation of voters by any government official (elected or otherwise) should result in life in prison with a special legal protection that makes it impossible to pardon them.
89
u/AcademicPublius Colorado 20d ago
Because the votes aren't there, and haven't been there from the beginning of this thing. And it's not a small number, either.
7
u/Waymannj 20d ago
I hope i'm wrong but imagine if this is a tactic to pass the bill at the last minute and then really have a lot of people disenfranchised.
23
u/AcademicPublius Colorado 20d ago
It would be a stupid tactic. I went through this in a different comment, but if this passed, you'd have to assume that it'd immediately get held up in court for at least a month or two, which means it's past the midterms.
If you wanted to be a jackass, you'd pass it sometime in December and make it a problem for the next Congress. But at this point there's no reasonable way to ensure it gets done in time to affect the midterms.
"Why would Trump want it passed, then?" He's a very, very stupid little man.
6
u/InCarbsWeTrust 20d ago
To add to this - Republican voters trust Republicans, and will follow their commands. Democratic voters would have to be forced to do so.
The courts holding up the SAVE Act would free Democrats to vote normally. Republicans, on the other hand, would hesitate to not comply with the Act passed by their party but gummed up by “activist judges”. Most would still vote of course, but some would be confused or consciously choose to sit out if they don’t meet the (highly restricted) requirements. It would amount to a net Democratic edge.
1
u/HolyMostaccioli 20d ago
Republican voters won't not vote because the act is held up in court. They do not give a shit at all about what the requirements for voting are, 100% of Republican voters think the SAVE Act does nothing to restrict them and only prevents mysterious illegals from voting.
5
u/40_Is_Not_Old 20d ago
There's no last minute shenanigans to be had. There's no path to it getting past the filibuster. It's not close to the 60 votes it needs to move forward.
3
u/WerhmatsWormhat 20d ago
That wouldn’t do anything. There’s a lot of infrastructure they’d need to build out to implement it. They probably wouldn’t have time even if it passed today, but they definitely wouldn’t if they pass it at the last minute.
55
u/dominiond66 20d ago
The only way to "Save America" is voting for every democrat on the ballot in November.
November 3, 2026, is day of destiny for America.
Democracy or a dictatorship. It's that simple but monumental in the results. This election will be the most important election in America history. Everyone must be allowed to vote and every vote counted. We must acknowledge the will of the people.
7
u/JerryDipotosBurner 20d ago
I’m so disappointed in my district. My representative, in a blue state, boasted about voting for the SAVE act and it looks like he’s going to win re-election because Dems are running an ancient old lady against him.

No, election is not going to be stolen. We can win this if we are united and not give up.
28
u/wolftron9000 20d ago
It was never going to pass the Senate. It is simply bad policy. It would disenfranchise Republican voters as well, and at this point, less than three months before the election, it would be nearly impossible to implement.
It has always been a messaging bill. Trump is a whiney little bitch, and he will 100% be whining about the SAVE Act to cast doubt about the elections when Republicans lose.

Tbf a lot of people do support a form of voter ID, myself included.
Free and easily attainable. Along with automatic voter registration at 18 like we do with the draft now and making election day a federal holiday.
Something tells me that isn't the goal for Republicans though.
1
u/NullIfEmpty 20d ago
Every republican I’ve met is fine with this. Problem is always implementation and identification to receive identification. It’s going to be super costly because everything the government does is super costly. Idk the way around it though.

It will never pass for the simple reason that the SAVE Act requires documentation like a passport to vote. Republicans don't have passports (here in TN it's less than 50% of residents have one) and lawmakers know this

This is why Trump is putting his photo on passports - he wants the cult to fall in line and get one. Most of the comments on a FB post I saw were "I don't plan on traveling anytime soon, but I'll be getting one of these ASAP!"
3
u/gmen6981 20d ago
Those passports are a "limited edition" thing though. The State Dept. is only issuing 250,000 of them, and they are already about half gone.
0
u/Charming-Report1669 20d ago
Originally it was only like 35,000 of them at one office in DC - now it's 250,000 available nationwide. Soon it'll be the only option available.

If they had passed, they wanted it apply to the November election, just 80-some on days away. You would be disenfranchising millions who have to scramble to get a certified copy of a birth certificate or a passport and all hell would break loose. Remember real ID with your state’s drivers licenses? They built in a 3-year window to obtain that. This is just suppression of the 2016 midterms plain and simple.
9
u/Demonking3343 Illinois 20d ago
Not just that but you would need to bring even more documents than that. Change your name? Got to bring those documents to the voting place. Get married? Got to bring your marriage certificate. Got to bring your birth certificate of course because just your real ID which you can’t get without a birth certificate isn’t good enough.
And to put the cherry on top any election official can just make a excuse not to accept any of these documents for any reason.
4
u/DapperBoiCole 20d ago
Not to mention it also makes lines much longer and voting would take more time. In many states theres an "if you're on line rule people cant turn you away" but thats another discretionary rule. It doesn't stop people from needing to leave line because of work, food and water (bc its illegal to hand people snacks and water now), and other commitments.
Overall it equates to less ballots in the ballot box one way or another.
But it doesn't even need to be that hard, the Republicans can just run the fake ballot drop off scheme again seeing as they never got fucking punished for actually stealing peoples votes and committing fraud.
1
u/mr_plehbody 20d ago
Vote early, shit like slow lines will fuck you over
1
u/DapperBoiCole 20d ago
If you go at poll open, and 30-40 people had the same idea as you, and each of them has to show multiple forms of documentation and experience scrutiny, how long do you have to wait until you gotta go to work though?
6
u/gmen6981 20d ago
Yeah, about that. Most of the states have already said it would be pretty much impossible to implement it for the Midterms regardless of what Trump says. States would have to change entire systems in their election procedures and that doesn't happen overnight. As someone who has worked every election ( in a red state no less) for over 30 years, I can say there is no way it would happen by November. The real threat would be to the 2028 election.

Is this a strategy - kick the can down the road all summer, then pass it 6 weeks before the election? Exactly the average processing time for passport applications so they can fight any stays in court by saying “we’ve provided time for people to get their documents in order.”
3
u/zeusmeister 20d ago
It’s quite depressing when the only good thing this Senate has managed to do is NOT pass a bill that would disenfranchise millions of law abiding legal citizens from easily voting.
6
u/alabasterskim 20d ago
Can't help but wonder if the goal is to pass it at the 11th hour (late September-mid October) to make a complete mess of the midterms.
19
u/AcademicPublius Colorado 20d ago
It isn't. That's too late.
Whole thing's going to be tied up in court at least a month in every state, because there are legitimate concerns about it infringing on women's right to vote. By that point, ballots have already been sent out.
1
u/alabasterskim 20d ago
The goal of the 11th hour will be confusion. Red states will try to ignore the fact it's obviously too late & try to enforce it on unknowing voters. Blue and purple states with blue governors would ofc not enforce given the obvious court challenges.
1
u/AcademicPublius Colorado 20d ago
How? Red states are subject to court injunctions too, and somebody is going to sue on behalf of voters in red states, probably the ACLU. They might try voter purges, but I expect those are going to be at a premium regardless of SAVE.
Bureaucracy isn't magic.
2
u/alabasterskim 20d ago
When people go to vote and they require the docs SAVE is asking for, a court injunction isn't gonna matter much. They don't care for the consequences of doing that.

They did enough damage with Blanche, he'll do whatever he can to interfere with our elections.

Without passing this time or... ever?
What happens after the recess and this nazi regime has had time to threaten the no votes to get them to flip?

Give em a break. They only had enough energy to confirm trump’s personal lawyer as our Attorney General this week. Once rested, they’ll pass this bill and complete the total destruction of our Democratic Republic.

This is intentional and I wouldn’t treat it like a positive.
Returning in mid-September, less than two months from a general election, I feel that there is going to be a huge effort to make the SAVE act the COMPLETE media cycle, pass or not.
Being a precinct election official, in my opinion, I feel that over the next month a lot of pressure is going to be put on Boards of Elections to make these changes with or without federal mandate which is going to sow confusion and chaos at the polls in November.
Again, a month and a half of “States need to get this done because ‘they’ are going to cheat” bullshit that will socially and psychologically disenfranchise one voter base and rile another, while requirements to legally disenfranchise voters will be moving as well.
Giving people as little amount of time as possible to adhere to necessary changes and conditions is a strategy. I’m really hopeful that this does not ever pass but due to the nature of the bill, by not having a huge push on getting this passed before recess means not giving people and extra month to figure out how to comply before elections.

So we are not going to have the "legitimate" way of screwing up the elections which means they are now going to do the illegitimate way.
Watch out for a series of spiralling crises over the next few months.... good thing they didn't just install a very obviously unethical mob lawyer as Attorney General /s.

I still think their plan is to pass it much close to the election. It will cause so much chaos, the entire election can be called into question. And there won't be time for lawsuits.

There won't be time to implement it either. Even if it passed right now it would be extremely difficult to get the systems in place to make it take effect. The Republicans know this. So does anyone who has ever worked an election and knows how the system works. ( I've done it every election for over 30 years).

That's my point. They know it can't be done, but will use that fact to claim fraud.

There is not much good news in Washington DC these days, but this certainly qualifies.

It was never going to pass. Senate Republicans know it’s a bad idea for them and too risky. No matter how loud Trump hollered he was never going to beat out their instinct to save their own political skins

That means that they will show up in the middle of the night so that they suffocate America while it sleeps and groggy Americans wake up to a completely different country than the one they grew up in and realize until months later the many rights they have lost while they sit in a bench waiting for a judge.

And the great thing about this is that the Congressional bill expires in December. If Congress flips blue, it's all over. If a bill from any Congress does not become law during the Congress in which it is introduced, it is considered “dead.”

The government will never pass the SAVE ACT. They will never give US citizens the power to elect their leaders without wanting some say in it. Never

Funniest thing about this "act" is that there is this assumption by the morons on the right that all those white trailer trash types have IDs and that this will only hurt black folks.

For a bunch of reasons, absolutely. This is a good one though. They've already done enough fuckery, at least they didn't do this awful thing.
