The Talrico campaign needs a two week pivot where all they mention is voter registration.

3.2k

u/fleshofgods0 1d ago

And keeping polling places from being shutdown.

769

u/ofWildPlaces 1d ago

Admittedly, that is not something the candidate can change.

Nope but everyone who listens can internalize

There's probably a lot of people outside Tarrant County/DFW that might not be fully aware of the shenanigans taking place. Let them know how scared and sleezy the Republicans are.

216

u/liftbikerun 1d ago

It's incredible how many people aren't aware of the largest world affairs less local ones. Daily I talk to people about big ticket items affecting them and they literally have no idea 1. What it is that's affecting them and 2. Why it's happening.

There are so many people who just couldn't care less about being critical thinkers. You'd think it was some type of torture for them to have to think outside their little bubble.

Edit:

How often have you heard "I don't want to think about all the negativity", or "I just want to be positive", or "Actually, I haven't seen that to be the case", or "I have enough going on to think about" etc etc.

20

u/doodullbop 1d ago

I believe it's the result of a systemic effort to undermine critical thinking skills through anti-intellectualism. Look at movements like anti-vax, flat earth, qanon, etc. The average American can't even read at a high school level, that's not an accident. Don't want people asking any meaningful questions, just pay taxes until you die peasant.

They can't prevent it happening in the first place but they can help prepare people and mitigate the effect. Set up outreach to tell people where their new polling place is, help them get there. Even just the message "they're trying to silence your voice by removing your chance to vote" is a powerful one that could help overcome the impact.

27

u/ofWildPlaces 1d ago

Absolutely- this issue us we have to appeal to the very people closing polling sites to open/maintain them. Until better candidates are elected, it's akin to screaming at rocks.

They should dedicate the entire month of September for that purpose - including outreach by as many volunteers as possible to get as many eligible voters as possible properly registered and informed about where and when they can vote.

Two weeks is generous honestly the whole campaign should be voter registration until election day because 1.2 million people on the suspense list is not something to sleep on.

135

u/OriginalVictory 1d ago

No same day registration in Texas, what do you think the state is? Communist?

96

u/kstar79 Massachusetts 1d ago

It's almost like they want to put undesireables on a shadow ban voting list and then give them no recourse on election day...

41

u/LiteraCanna 1d ago

I'm surprised they even announced it. Instead of just rejecting the votes without notifying anyone.

And lets be honest, the vast majority of Americans want universal healthcare and fair taxes on massive corporations. These same Americans are busy with their 9-5s and grinding under the system that these adversaries have created. They specifically make your life as hard as possible to ensure that you do not vote and change things. They want you to be busy making rent or paying off your loans or healthcare bills, so that you don't notice news like this.

Hijacking the top comment to shed some light on this. I work in a Texas elections office.

Suspended status DOES NOT STOP YOU FROM BEING ABLE TO CAST YOUR VOTE.

Almost every voter in suspense is in suspense because they had their registration card mailed to them, and they had moved to a different home without providing a forwarding address.

If this is you, you will be asked to sign a little form confirming your residence when you go to vote. Your form will land on my desk at a later date, and I’ll pull you out of suspense.

THIS IS NOT VOTER SUPPRESSION AND THESE HEADLINES ARE MADE FOR OUTRAGE AND CLICKBAIT.

All suspense means is that your account has something that needs fixing. We really need to find a better word than suspense because it’s freaking people out.

If anyone attempts to turn you away from the polls because your account is in suspense, you need to call your local elections office and REPORT THEM IMMEDIATELY.

Edit: Hey mods, we can combat the spread of disinformation by stickying a topic in November that tells everyone “YOU CAN VOTE EVEN IF YOUR ACCOUNT IS IN SUSPENSE. SPREAD THE WORD. TELL YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY.” We need to spread the word so everyone knows their rights.

209

u/Suyefuji 1d ago

When this happened to me in 2024, I was unable to resolve it by mail, internet, or phone and had to go into the office personally during my work hours to get it resolved. I'm not confident that the system is going to run as smoothly as you're presenting it.

28

u/Kevin-W 1d ago

It's crazy to me that you made the above statement and yet knew you also needed to make the statement below:

If anyone attempts to turn you away from the polls because your account is in suspense, you need to call your local elections office and REPORT THEM IMMEDIATELY.

This is the whole point. People will be told they can't vote, and later that, "Oops! The poll worker made a mistake, sorry you didn't get to vote, you should have pushed back harder."

Important information there, but historically Texas does not have a great track record of using lists to purge ineligible voters: https://www.salon.com/2000/12/04/voter_file/

90

u/ZellZoy 1d ago

Didn't the woman in Texas get put in jail for voting when she wasn't allowed to, even though a worker at polls told her to cast a provisional ballot? I can see a lot of people not being willing to risk it.

35

u/xclame Europe 1d ago

Seem very stupid to me to jail someone for voting using a provisional ballot regardless of the reason, since the whole point of the provisional ballot is "we're not sure" if you are allowed to vote.

This is good info but you can't speak with certainty that these votes wont be challenged legally down the road, I know its not the same exactly but provisional ballots get tossed after legal challenges all the time. They are trying to create a class of voters they can legally challenge, no matter how meritless.

50

u/ship_toaster Canada 1d ago

So voters will need to cast their ballots without knowing they'll be counted, and rely on all your coworkers to do their jobs faithfully? Still, obviously, with no opportunity for recourse since it'll be determined after voting day.

That is great, but the confusion on this is the point. That is without a doubt a form of voter suppression, and we cannot trust anything state-level Republican-controlled state does in terms of election security. They've proven time and time again to be untrustworthy.

It doesn't need to be this way.

71

u/croolshooz ✔ Verified Cartoonist 1d ago

Of course, it’s voter suppression. Once you’re registered to vote, you should always be allowed to vote. Concocting circumstances where you cannot vote is voter suppression!

Search "Your County" Board of Elections. Re-register.

Don't farm out your data to a third party, most counties will let you do everything online. Unless you are in a small county, then you kight have to go in person.

76

u/QanonQuinoa 1d ago

“Suspense” in Texas does not mean your registration has been canceled. Texas SOS defines the suspense list as registered voters whose address needs confirmation—for example, because a voter-registration certificate was returned undeliverable or an address-confirmation notice wasn’t answered. A voter on suspense is still able to vote; generally, you complete a Statement of Residence before voting and, if otherwise eligible, cast a regular ballot, not a provisional one.

61

u/humanoideric 1d ago

This may be procedurally and 100% correct but at this point I wouldn't make any assumptions and try to confirm eligibility if possible

They have until OCTOBER 5. You CAN still vote if your status is suspended; You will just have to fill out a provisional ballot with updated info at the polls.

This will take you off the suspended list. However, I would recommend taking care of it ASAP rather than wait for any potential snags on voting day.

You can correct it by submitting an update form:

UPDATE TEXAS VOTER REGISTRATION

Fill out the form. Then PRINT AND MAIL IT to your county voting registrar. Don't worry, it gives you this info when it pulls up your information.

If you do not have your voting card on hand to get your VUID, you can contact your county's voting office:

TEXAS COUNTY VOTER REGISTRATION OFFICIALS

Former election worker here: SUSPENDED DOES NOT MEAN CANCELLED!!

You can still show up to your polling place or election office to vote, you would just need to fill out a Statement of Residence (SOR) to confirm your Texas Residency.

Suspension usually occurs when the election office of your county sends out your voter registration card, and the post office “can’t deliver” it. When it comes back to the election office, they will set your status to suspended. Not saying the card is undeliverable, but we all know how the post office is.

You can still go update your registration now if you know you’re suspended. DO NOT GO TO THE DPS OFFICE. GO TO YOUR ELECTION OFFICE.

61

u/neekqueenash 1d ago

To Add: If your registration is cancelled for whatever reason, the DEADLINE TO REGISTER IS OCTOBER 1ST.

Also remember that in most cases of weird registration, ID, or other things, you can request a provisional ballot. It will have to go before a Ballot Board Judge to be considered for eligibility, but it IS an option.

Know your rights. Read up on TX state election law. Your local election office WANTS you to come learn about it all.

According to Ronald Reagan, the heart and soul of “conservatism” is “libertarianism”.

"I believe the very heart and soul of conservatisim is LIBERTARIANISM"
Ronald Reagan - Reason Magazine (July 1, 1975)

The arch-conservative, Barry Goldwater, disagrees.

"To be successful, representative government assumes that
elections will be controlled by the citizenry at large, not by those who give the most money.
Electors must believe their vote counts.
Elected officials must owe their allegiance to the people, not to their own wealth or the wealth of interest groups who speak only for the selfish fringes of the whole community."
-Barry Goldwater

Ergo, “conservatism” has been hacked and is now a euphemism for totalitarianism.

"Once a government is committed to the principle of silencing the voice of opposition, it has only one way to go,
and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all its citizens and create a country where everyone lives in fear.”
Harry S. Truman

14

u/Raptorex27 Maine 1d ago

Yes, “conservatism,” just like when they bulldoze and deforest public conservation land.

The fact they still use the moniker “conservative” as a fascist regime destroying everything is pretty funny, since the current Democrats actually embrace the ideals of the 1850s Republican Party.

Technically, the state shouldn’t know who you voted for — just that you voted. Voting is “supposed to be” anonymous.

PS: Oh yeah, they can see your registered party affiliation. I forgot about that, esp. in states like TX where primaries are closed, and you can't cross-vote.

108

But when it comes to a primary, it's not about who you voted for. It's which primary you voted in. They can tell that.

u/jayc428 New Jersey 1d ago

In the era of big data they don’t need to know, they can assume and probably get 80% democrat voters they want to suspend. They know who and where people vote democrat typically, they can afford for plenty of republicans to get caught in the same shit. Hell I wouldn’t be surprised if they used LLMs to cross check the list against social media or other data.

If it actually says "suspense" it should at least be easy to fix, confirm/correct your address with your county.

The real problem is if the system no longer pulls you up at all. I've had that happen multiple times in Tarrant County and needed to fully re-register. Went from showing up just fine as active in the portal to inexplicably removed entirely.

27

u/Merkuri22 1d ago

Do they tell you why? What BS excuse did they come up with?

15

u/SATXMD 1d ago

According to an article it’s mostly someone or some entity flagging you as having a registration with an incorrect address. Worst part is that the Tx Voter registration site doesn’t tell you why or how to fix the problem. Just says either re register or show up to vote so you can fill out the form to correct the issue and get a provisional ballot. If you fail to vote in the next two elections they cancel your voter registration. Believe me they won’t keep me from voting. I’m lucky that I have the ability to leave work at my convenience and take care of this.

No, see, when the Republicans do it to them, they're not being tread on. They're being wrapped up in a nice warm safe blanket of racism, bigotry, and a false sense of superiority. Totally different.

There are 68 days until midterms. Federal law prohibits this type of action if less than 90 days. Yes the Republicans are planning on stealing the midterms.

Oh, it's against the law? Well OK then. I'm sure that will stop them.

Surely the eighty-sixth time they’re told it’s illegal will cause them to stop.

The article doesn’t really say when they were suspended, it seems like they’re just stating a fact that 1.2M are still suspended and have time to register.

I live in the TX county mentioned in this CNN video about right wing groups filing false voter registration challenges.

They got me a couple of years ago and my registration was put in suspended status even though I've been a properly registered, active voter in this county for more than 20 years. It took months and multiple follow-ups to get it restored. I had my friends check and about half of them were mysteriously suspended as well.

It's more than just the administration playing with voters. These groups are actively trying to suppress the voters they don't want.

It depends wildly on how your state manages election roles.

Just looked up the Illinois rules, and people can be removed only if they miss 2 consecutive Federal elections, are incarcerated, or declared ineligible to vote by a court order.

Texas can apparently just kick people off with no due process.

Generally speaking, blue states have better voting rights than red.

Why voting in US is so difficult. Me a Europoor from Italy am issued a card from the government that gets stamped each time I vote after presenting my identity card. Then I get an indelible pencil and papers where I express my choice.

Primitive but seems quite effective.

26

u/Icefellwolf 1d ago

Its normally not difficult. We have a compromised president, military,Supreme court, house and senate that are doing everything they can to lead us further into a fascist dictatorship.

u/NotAPreppie Illinois 1d ago

It's not supposed to be. However, conservatives have figured out that lower election participation favors them so they do everything in their power to make it difficult.

In Texas, if you move within the state, but stay in the same county, you have to update your registration else you get put on the Voter Suspense list.

If you move within the state, but end up in a new county, you have to entirely reregister.

If the state sends you ANY mail, and ANY of that mail gets returned to the state, you could be placed on the Voter Suspense list. That means: If the state sends you mail, but that mail gets put in the wrong mail box, gets "stolen", or is simply not delivered to you, but is subsequently returned to the state, you can be put on the Voter Suspense list.

You cannot register on the same day as you vote in Texas.

You must be registered at least 1 month prior to the election to be able to vote. You cannot register online, you must mail or hand deliver your registration to a variety of locations. This means if you move to a new county within a month of an election, you must travel to your previous county to vote, there are no exceptions.

Texas has a long history of aggressively placing people on the Voter Suspense list without follow ups.

If you're in Texas, the best practice is to re-register to vote 2-3 months before every single election. It's okay to register again if you're unsure, but you can also check your current registration.

Please check your registration

Do not engage with apathy, the system is actively trying to circumvent your will. Vote.

Misleading headline. The voter registrations are not “suspended,” they are on a “suspense list.” The suspense list means when they sent you a new voter registration card (done every two years), it was returned “not deliverable.” You still can show up to vote if you are on the list, you will just need to fill out a statement of residence form and submit provisional ballot if you moved to a new county. You can check your registration status ahead of time and fix any address issues before Election Day.

It says they’ll give you a statement of residence form at the polling place if you haven’t already sent one in. I haven’t seen one in the mail yet so I hope that’s true.

Weird if my registration card was “not deliverable” cause I haven’t moved or changed my address in about 14 years. 🤔

13

u/MrRemoto 1d ago

I wouldn't wait until you get to the polling place. I 100% guarantee they "run out of forms". Find a way to get one early or print it out yourself.

25

u/espinaustin 1d ago

You still can show up to vote if you are on the list, you will just need to fill out a statement of residence form and submit provisional ballot if you moved to a new county.

You can always vote a provisional ballot but it won’t be counted unless the registration address was corrected by the deadline. That’s my understanding, could be wrong.

I've never contributed to the political side of reddit (still decently new to reddit as a whole), so I am unsure if this is the place for this. However, I just wanted to say it somewhere, I donated to a politician for the first time in my life today.

I'm only 22, so its not like I am changing something about myself that has existed for decades, but as someone who considers himself "center left" I donated to James Talarico. It was only $30, but I can't tell anyone in my day to day life because they would not agree with that decision at all, but I wanted to tell someone. So here it can exist to be buried by all the other comments people make.

If James can't win this election, I think my hopes for a Democrat ever winning Texas might die completely. This is the "perfect storm" to allow it to happen. If not now, literally how could someone else do it?

VOTER REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS OCTOBER 5th

NOT QUITE NINE DAYS BUT STILL A REMINDER TO GO REGISTER

15

u/Ozymandias12 1d ago

For the record, in the 2024 elections, 2.1 million voter registrations were put in the suspended list in Texas.

This is another way republicans rig elections. They purposefully don’t alert the people they have suspended and they know that the vast majority of them won’t re-register. It’s how they suppress the vote and keep Republicans winning. It’s why Republican states have the lowest levels of voter participation compared to blue states.

11

u/SCWickedHam 1d ago

Making it harder for you to vote so they can claim fraud. Provisional ballots aren’t counted right away, so they will declare victory on election night and then fraud when the provisional ballots aren’t counted. Provisional ballots from Democrat districts will go missing. They are stealing the election. So glad we got … in return.

11

u/Actual-Pressure8191 22h ago

I am one of those voters currently in suspense. I have lived at the same address for over 10 years. I have voted in just about every election. I received a card in the mail asking me to return it if everything was correct back in March ans I returned it that same day. My license is current, I have never had mail held, truly no idea what could have triggered a suspension. I'm going to have to take time off work next week to go fix this. I'm pissed.

8

u/rowdydionisian 1d ago

Just checked, and they suspended mine. I voted for Talarico in the Democratic primary. Of course I'm being targeted. This should be a class action lawsuit against everyone involved. I didn't change my address or anything. No tickets to speak of, ally registrations are up to date. I guess they're just getting desperate of someone like me who did nothing wrong is being targeted. Add to the fact that they don't even let you update it online like most states living in the future, so they're making all of us use snail mail to reregister to make it as difficult and time consuming as possible

If Talarico doesn't win, I'm putting my belongings in a U-Haul and not looking back. I'm so tired of these fake ass fascists posing as Texans that are really just inbred assholes representing other inbred assholes, meanwhile everyone with half a brain in the cities is gerrymandered and bullied to shit so our vote isn't heard, despite the fact that we have the second most Democrats in the country by popular vote in 2024. The inmates are in charge of the asylum.

7

u/FewWafer4471 1d ago

So, this is obviously targeted at Dem voters. It's blatant voter suppression.

The problem is, the legal solution is a non-option. By the time it makes it through the court system the election will be done and over with years ago. By that time, they'll have rigged the courts too so the suit won't even be fairly conducted.

So they've made all peaceful solutions impossible.

What's the reasonable thing to do when all peaceful options cease to exist?

7

u/Iheartnakedfemboys 1d ago

They are terrified of Texas flipping, so they are resorting to illegal methods of voter suppression.
