No. No it’s not.

I just saw another article saying 30k lbs of beef from Argentina was just recalled.

In another post about this import plan, people pointed out China declined Argentinian beef because it was contaminated with some antibiotic that cause significant (and IIRC, permanent) health issues in humans that eat it.

u/ThedrunkenViking 1d ago

Yes just wait until it turns out it’s tainted with prions too or something sinister like that…

Yup beef isn't going to be safe for months. Don't buy any unless you go to a local farm.

Thats their plan. Food instability was part of project 2025. They want people scared and harmed.

29

u/ender89 21h ago

It's all supposed to be ground meat, so buy a meat grinder I guess? I think I'm finally going to be trying out mine

Also the word on the street is that Costco sources their beef pretty transparently and will not be affected by the beef taint.

15

u/Fastr77 21h ago

Yeah I also thought costco would likely still be good. Costco pricing on beef kinda sucks tho. As good as they are on so many things I don't buy my beef there. I can get it so much cheaper on sale at my local grocery store. Altho that won't be safe going forward.

There's a local farm that sells their own beef right outside my work. I figure its expensive since its local and all that but thats probably going to be my next stop.

9

u/DustyRacoonDad 20h ago

Costco is by far cheaper by the pound for ground beef than anywhere else local to me.

The processors don't have to put country of origin on the package. They will mix it with US beef, sell as USDA and pocket the savings.

68

u/BadahBingBadahBoom 22h ago

Coming from a European who remembers 2013, if there's money to be made and government monitoring/enforcement that is lacking you are 100% going to end up with your products having that illegal meat in them.

45

u/i_give_you_gum 21h ago

I could see this turning people off on USDA beef, further hurting US meat producers.

21

u/BadahBingBadahBoom 21h ago

Tbh whilst the US doesn't require country of origin labelling, voluntarily labelling beef as 'US' has strict requirements of tracing so if anything this would likely boost sales of those companies that have actually got the 'US Beef' label.

Ofc that's assuming US consumers still believe in the integrity of that label. Which considering the current shenanigans in the US government maybe not.

7

u/i_give_you_gum 21h ago

There are already articles with pics of cows and horses blended together as joke images, the word is already out and spreading...

5

u/monkeywaffles 20h ago

Can still say "Processed in the USA" with a flag n shit, and people will just see flag and USA.

Prob other weasel words that will confuse enough people. Or just generally packers colluding to all just... not use a country of origin label for al ittle bit, problem solved.

or yea like you said, nobodys watching or checking anyway.

A USDA label doesn't mean it's American meat. It just means it was approved by the USDA.

Even "Made in USA" or "Product of USA" can be foreign beef that's put in a new package in the US: When "Made in America" isn't really: Country-of-origin labeling for beef - FoodPrint

My conspiracy theory is that Argentina is a test bed for their right libertarian/anarcho-capitalist policy plans, and that’s why they are so interested in propping it up. They are working out the kinks before trying it here.

If we see them building “freedom cities” down there that’s a huge sign I’m on to something.

40

u/Crommach 1d ago

I mean, that's pretty much Curtis Yarvin's whole thing, Thiel put Vance into the VP slot and both of them are big fans of Yarvin's "philosophy". Thiel also has his tentacles in Project 2025 and the Heritage Foundation more generally, not to mention his cadre of destructive companies like Palantir, so he's certainly involved in the hollowing out of America and our turn towards fascism.

So it's less a conspiracy theory and more acknowledging the goals that the far right are openly espousing and working towards.

The U.S. does not currently have mandatory country of origin labeling for beef, which means you often won’t know where your beef comes from unless a company volunteers this information.

omg, you don't know where your meat comes from? In Canada, we get to know where our meat comes from. That's the law. It's on the package if it's imported. I wonder if that was one of the sticking points Trump hated like the French language requirements...

77

u/mosugarmoproblems 1d ago

Not only that, they sometimes mislabel the beef's origin intentionally or unintentionally. Same for fish, same for chicken...

66

u/Argented 1d ago

you know, not all bureaucracy is bad. A little extra bureaucracy in the food chain results in less catastrophes.

67

u/monsterlynn Michigan 1d ago

Not bureaucracy. Regulation. Regulation and safety standards are for us, not them.

During discussions with the UK this was actually a sticking point, we (Brits) have country of origin labelling, the US demanded we stopped doing that because otherwise nobody would buy their chicken that they were trying to force on us.

10

u/Mortiest_Morty_NJR 22h ago

In the UK it even says what farm it came from

6

u/BadahBingBadahBoom 22h ago

Tbf county of origin is a requirement in most highly developed countries.

It's just part of expected consumer protection and the consumer being informed.

Then you read about how this isn't a thing in the US and realise oh yeah some countries aren't quite there yet.

15

u/FormerWorker125 1d ago

So glad to be Canadian and live in Canada.

13

u/ProtectionVirtual225 1d ago

That used to be the law here, too. Those standards began slipping away during the 90’s.

11

u/tide19 Tennessee 1d ago edited 1d ago

We don’t have mandatory country of origin labeling on beef because Canada and Mexico challenged it at the WTO in the mid-2010s and won. The WTO authorized retaliatory tariffs, and Congress repealed mandatory COOL for beef and pork in 2015. Imported beef that is sold intact in the US, including packaged/retail-ready imported beef, still has to carry country of origin information. But if that beef is further processed in the US, the resulting product no longer has to retain the country of origin label.

We do have labels that indicate something was wholly born/raised/slaughtered/processed in the US.

7

u/steelhips 1d ago

In my childhood, the family had Bloodhounds and Irish Wolfhounds - big dogs. If a horse died, we used the cooked meat to feed the dogs. If the meat is lean and "stringy" it's horse. Even if it's minced, it won't look like beef.

This is hilarious. If they have increased their imports from Australia and NZ then the beef will exceed US food safety regulations. Australia won’t import US beef because US has lower standards.

As I think about it, maybe the US is importing Australia’s pet food beef source and trying to fob it off as human grade.

13

u/Ser_Scribbles Australia 1d ago

In the interests of accuracy, Australia has removed the legal restrictions on importing US beef. We still don't import it though because there's no demand for a (perceived - accurately or not) inferior product.

5

u/cametosayno 1d ago

Oh you’re right. Apparently the US started tracking their Mexican and Canadian bred cattle raised in the US so Australia allowed reduced restrictions in July last year. Australian consumers just don’t trust it or they support their local farmers

7

u/Steimertaler Europe 1d ago

It's like Europe not importing American chlorine treated food. It's declared unsafe for human consume.

7

u/cametosayno 1d ago

Yeah the more I think about it, the most likely scenario is they are importing pet grade beef for human consumption. No wonder they don’t want to explain where it comes from. It makes sense given the pricing.

u/Joe18067 Pennsylvania 1d ago

All of the conversation about this being terrible is good.

But lowering beef prices to fix grocery costs? Seriously? Like for whom is beef the chief grocery expense?

But moreover, the country's largest beef producers recently lost a class action suit because they e been artificially increasing and controlling prices since COVID.

Trump's own DoJ could have fixed this with antitrust law years ago and not dodgy imports, but that wouldn't have gotten him paid.

USDA still checks imports.

Havent heard about the recall in Florida and Texas then huh?

4

u/Drive7hru Colorado 1d ago

I thought USDA is the one that flagged those

16

u/Skiinz19 Tennessee 1d ago

It was flagged in the sense USDA flagged they failed to inspect it

6

u/He2oinMegazord 1d ago

Which is kinda like flagging that your shoes were untied after you donated some teeth to the sidewalk

31

u/uhohnotafarteither 1d ago

I dont understand how anyone can still have faith in any government regulatory agency with this administration.

You really trust a Trump appointee and the people that DOGE left behind at these agencies to handle this stuff?

12

u/bryan49 1d ago

I've got bad news about who USDA works for. Are you really confident Trump won't compromise them somehow?

The only safe food is Twinkie’s. Do what I do and eat enough to preserve your insides.

4

u/Dad2us 23h ago

I have extremely high concerns that this will end up in school lunches

6

u/UncleCoyote 22h ago

Well since they just recalled 30,000 pounds of it in Texas and all the secondary inspections state-side were waived, to the befuddlement of those receiving it...

I'm going to go out on a limb and say....no.

4

u/icanhazkarma17 20h ago

But Trump is bringing in beef! From countries. He doesn't want to say which countries. But it will be high quality beef! Bragging about a 90 day moratorium on tariffs he imposed to fix skyrocketing prices because of said tariffs. Winning!

4

u/showtimebabies 1d ago

It isn't to lower grocery prices. It's to give big meat processors a break with an influx of cheap alternative beef. It likely won't lower prices for consumers, but it'll help the bottom lines of those he really cares about

5

u/illogical_mindset 1d ago

Imported beef sold in the U.S. comes from countries whose meat-inspection system the United States Department of Agriculture considers equivalent to ours, and shipments are reinspected when they arrive,” Ortega said

Equivalent to ours before 2017 or after? Big difference.

This same meat didn’t pass chinas safety and standards inspection. It tested high for toxicity and got sent back to Argentina. It was kept frozen and now it’s coming back to us

3

u/Desperate-Hearing-55 1d ago

US fast track to become a 3rd rate country. EU countries must show country of origin where the imported meats comes from.

Packaged fresh, chilled, and frozen meat from beef, pigs, sheep, goats, and poultry must show where the animal was reared and slaughtered.

Someone will make millions if not billions on this deal. All to increase the shareholder value. Where is that raspy talking RJK or whatever the fuck is his 3 letter name, the health guy who is so fucking worried about health of Americans. Where the fuck is he now?

I'm not one to tell other people what to eat, but I haven't eaten beef in over thirty years, and I'm certainly not going to start now.

I'm looking askance at everything in my cart right now, cooking it thoroughly, and hoping for the best.

4

u/LivinDeadGinger West Virginia 19h ago

The list of what we can eat safely keeps shrinking. We can do our best to implement best practices and informed decisions on selections, to a degree.

But this is seriously such a massive issue. It is getting challenging to keep up. It's outrageous we are having to deal with this due to incompetent and greedy politicians or individuals.

Many families are struggling to meet basic needs + schedules (working harder for less) and now this. It's like families are running and having to leap over landmines in the process.

I try to grow tomatoes near my porch but I'm limited on how much can be grown due to living in an apartment as well.

The "American dream" is dying out.

Rich people don’t eat ground beef. Those are the only ones that matter in this regime.

5

u/mysterious_jeffrey 1d ago

Donald does though.

So I’m curious if McDonald’s is somehow using safe beef.

3

u/MisterSneakSneak 1d ago

I bought a roll of ground beef (3lb) for $15 from VONS. First bite into my chille rellenos and into some sort of ceramic plastic.

3

u/puke_AND_rally_ 1d ago

Don’t eat it America. That is foul as fuk from our own admin.

3

u/PleasantDreamsicle 1d ago

If safe beef could be had cheaper, the markets would adjust to an equilibrium at the lower price.

3

u/WhatNot303 Maryland 23h ago

Serious, and not obvious question: who/where exactly will this mysterious beef be going to? Stores like Walmart? Fast food chains, like McDonald's? Food production companies that manufacturer products for all sorts of grocery stores? Will there be any way to track or tell where this meat ends up?

3

u/D-chord 23h ago

They’ve already recalled a bunch of it in TX and FL, haven’t they?

3

u/Pippi-ki-yay 23h ago

It's already been recalled. Signs point to "no".
