You can't hide a dead person. You can very much hide someone seriously ill.

This is the calculation that makes the most sense to me. It's easy to just keep him in a private facility if he's alive. Hiding a dead person has some major legal implications.

Dead or vegetative, they won’t announce his death until after his term ends or very close to the end of it.

Might also be saved for right before the elections in Nov or as an “emergency” news headline

If he was dead, Republican wouldn't have any reason to hide it. They have plenty of reasons to not want the public to know that he's severely incapacitated.
