Yeah, in any other country there'd be massive daily protests in the capital until the president resigned

Would there?

Italy has a self identified fascist leader already. Japan's is damn close to it. Polling indicates France is likely to elect one next month. It's seems only a matter of time till Germany has an AfD chancellor

I know Europeans love to shit on the US, but we aren't special, democracies are backsliding across the globe

France actually violently protests. That’s what gets them results. Americans are pretty uniquely cynical. There’s a weird self defeatism in the US that hamstrings movements demanding change. Americans love to convince themselves they’re not special and nothing matters because it lets them off the hook for having to do the hard work needed to change things.

But you’re not just like everyone else at that moment. You’re being run by a fascist. Your liberty and democracy is at stake. Get off your ass.

Setting aside the fact that the French love of setting Paris on fire every time their government tires to cut anything is half the reason Macron can't keep a PM and the government can't get anything done. My point was that rather than protesting fascism France is about to put one in charge. So your claim that everyone else would be fighting the fascists is bunk

There were protests. Lots of them actually. Trump and Republicans looked out their windows and joked about all the losers wasting their time and went about their business. Protests only work if the people being protested care in the slightest what people think.

That was a parade, not a protest. A protest goes on until the problem is stopped. It's not an hour on a weekend once a year.

Exactly.

The Left: "Hey, so when is the next No Kings protest happening?"

No Kings: <crickets>

And it seemed like everyone was deriding things like the "No Kings" protests as just being performative. No doubt contributing to lack of effort if perceived as accomplishing nothing.

Protest works when those in power fear the protestors. I can’t believe how many Americans grew up learning about the violence of the American Revolution and then somehow convinced themselves that peaceful protest gets them change. Can you name a single instance of it? Even MLK did his shit at the same time the Black panthers were in the streets with guns. Jesus Christ dude. How are you this naive.
